PROJECT CIGARETTE
Smoking is Haram (prohibited) due to its many harmful effects and bad consequences. This is a well-known generally accepted fact. No one could doubt or refute this truth. Harms of smoking have been proved through evidence that doctors have agreed upon. Tobacco used for smoking is bad whereas Almighty Allah made lawful for his slaves all the good and useful and forbade what is bad and harmful.

Project Cigarette: Fiqh of cigarette smoking and smokers



Q 1: Is it permissible to listen to the Qur'an on the Radio, from another person, or on television while smoking a cigarette?

Q 2: Is it permissible to enter a Masjid (mosque) while a person is carrying a lighted cigarette in his hand, or should it be thrown away before entering the place of Wudu' (ablution)?

Q 3: Is it permissible to read the Qur'an, while holding it, or recite it from one's memory while smoking a cigarette?

Q 4: is smoking cigarettes Makruh (reprehensible) or Haram (prohibited)?

Q 5: Some people claim that Allah's saying,Forbidden to you (for food) are: Al-Maitah (the dead animals- cattle- beast not slaughtered), blood, the flesh of swine, and that on which Allâh’s Name has not been mentioned while slaughtering applies to cigarettes, i.e. that it is among the things on which Allah's Name is not mentioned. Is this true?

Answer By Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta' of Saudi Arabia   answered these five questions collectively, as they are all relevant.

Smoking cigarettes is a sin, as it is harmful to the body and a waste of money, so it is prohibited by Shari`ah (Islamic law). It is also implied in Allah's saying, he allows them as lawful At-Tayyibât (i.e. all good and lawful as regards things, deeds, beliefs, persons, foods), and prohibits them as unlawful Al-Khabâ’ith (i.e. all evil and unlawful as regards things, deeds, beliefs, persons and foods) Cigarettes are not good, lawful things, but unlawful ones.

If smoking cigarettes is a sin, committing this sin in the Masjid, while listening to the Qur'an from a person or on the radio, or while reciting the Qur'an is a much graver sin, as it entails violating the sanctity of the places designed for `Ibadah (worship) by committing a sin there, and violating the sacredness of the Qur'an, which is the word of Allah, the source of Islamic legislation, and the source of wisdom and good preaching by committing this sin while listening to it or reciting it.

If people observe decency in the presence of honorable people and while performing formal rites, how can they dare to commit a sin in the Masjid, a place designed for `Ibadah and getting closer to Allah, or while listening to the Qur'an or studying it? A person should quit smoking, and especially at the time of Dhikr (Remembrance of Allah), reciting Qur'an or listening to it.

It is not true what is mentioned in the fifth question, that Allah's saying, on which Allâh’s Name has not been mentioned while slaughtering). applies to smoking cigarettes; the truth is that it refers to the slaughtered animals on which names other than Allah's Name are mentioned while slaughtering, which entails the desire to get closer to someone other than Allah through slaughtering animals. It was narrated by `Aly ibn Abu Talib from the Prophet (peace be upon him) that he said, Allah curses the person who slaughters (a sacrifice) to anyone other than Him. Narrated by Muslim in his Sahih (authentic) Book of Hadith. It is enough to prohibit smoking cigarettes because it is something unlawful, harmful to the health, and a waste of money. Thus, it applies to Allah's saying, and prohibits them as unlawful Al-Khabâ’ith (i.e. all evil and unlawful as regards things, deeds, beliefs, persons and foods) It also applies to the Hadith that states, There should be neither harming nor reciprocating harm. Narrated by Imam Ahmad in his Musnad (Hadith compilation) and Ibn Majah in his Sunan (Hadith compilations classified by jurisprudential themes), on the authority of Ibn `Abbas from the Prophet (peace be upon him). It also applies to the Hadith that states, A person who causes harm to Muslims is cursed. Narrated by Al-Tirmidhy on the authority of Abu Bakr from the Prophet (peace be upon him).

In the name of Allah , the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.

From Fataawaa al-Lajnah al-Daa’imah, 13/31

Smoking is haraam, growing tobacco is haraam, and dealing in it is haraam,

because of the great harm which it causes. It was narrated in the hadeeth;
“There should be no causing harm or reciprocating harm. Smoking is also one of al-khabaa’ith [evil things].

Allaah described the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) as (interpretation of the meaning): “… he allows them as lawful al-Tayyibaat [all good and lawful things] and prohibits them as unlawful al-Khabaa’ith [all evil and unlawful things]…”
[al-A’raaf 7:157]

And Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“They ask you what is lawful for them. Say: ‘Lawful unto you are al-tayyibaat…”
[al-Maa’idah 5:4]

Project Cigarette: The reason why smoking is haraam


In the name of Allah , the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful

Praise be to Allaah.


Perhaps you know that all nations of the world – Muslim and kaafir alike – have now started to fight smoking, because they know that it is very harmful. Islam forbids everything that is harmful, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “There should be no harming or reciprocating harm.”


Undoubtedly there are foods and drinks which are beneficial and good, and others which are harmful and bad. Allaah described our Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) in the following terms (interpretation of the meaning):

“he allows them as lawful At Tayyibaat (i.e. all good and lawful as regards things, deeds, beliefs, persons and foods), and prohibits them as unlawful Al Khabaa’ith (i.e. all evil and unlawful as regards things, deeds, beliefs, persons and foods)

[al-A’raaf 7:157]

Is smoking one of the good and lawful things (al-tayyibaat) or one of the evil and unlawful things (al-khabaa’ith)?



Secondly: it was narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Allaah forbids you to trade gossip, to ask too many questions and to waste money.” And Allaah forbade wasteful extravagance when He said (interpretation of the meaning):

“and eat and drink but waste not by extravagance, certainly He (Allaah) likes not Al Musrifoon (those who waste by extravagance) [al-A’raaf 7:31]

And He described the slaves of the Most Merciful as follows (interpretation of the meaning):

“And those who, when they spend, are neither extravagant nor niggardly, but hold a medium (way) between those (extremes)” [al-Furqaan 25:67]

The whole world now knows that the money spent on smoking is to be considered as money wasted, from which no benefit is gained; indeed, it is money spent on something harmful. If the money which is spent on smoking worldwide were to be collected, it could have saved entire populations who have died of starvation. Is there anyone more foolish that one who holds a dollar bill and sets fire to it? What is the difference between him and the one who smokes? Indeed, the smoker is more foolish, because the folly of the one who burns a dollar bill ends there, whilst the one who smokes burns his money and also harms his body.

Thirdly: how many disasters have been caused by smoking, because of cigarette butts which are thrown away and cause fires. Other disasters have been caused in other ways, as when a house was burned down with its occupants inside, when a man lit his cigarette when there was a gas leak.

Fourthly: how many people are offended by the smell of smokers, especially when you are unfortunate enough to have one of them standing next to you in the mosque. Probably any nasty smell is easier to bear than the smell of the smoker’s mouth when he has just woken up. It is amazing how many women can put up with the smell of their husbands’ mouths! The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) forbade those who had eaten garlic or onions from coming to the mosque so that they would not offend their fellow-worshippers with their smell. The smell of onions and garlic is easier to bear than the smell of the smoker and his mouth.

These are some of the reasons why smoking is haraam.

Ruling on smoking the argileh or shisha – and a discussion on its harmful effects
Is shisha [water pipe, also known as hookah or hubble-bubble] haraam? What if a person does not use any kind of tobacco; rather he uses rosewater? Is it still haraam?.



Firstly: 
There is no doubt that smoking is one of the worst poisons that many people are very keen to consume, not caring about the diseases that it causes, which lead to death in many cases. The World Health Organisation stated, in its 2008 report, that smoking tobacco kills 5.4 million people every year, i.e., approximately 14,000 people every day. Unless urgent measures are taken, tobacco will kill ten million people annually by the year 2020. 
In the answer to questions no. 7432 and 10922, we have explained that it is haraam to cultivate, deal in and consume this evil plant.

Smoking is one of the things which has caused a lot of problems and harm these days and it has spread like wild fire. Before we discuss this topic in detail, we should know that Allaah the Almighty has divided things in the world into two types, good or permissible (al-tayyibaat, al-halaal) and evil or prohibited (al-khabaa'ith, al-haraam), and there is no third type. 

Allah says (interpretation of the meaning) in surat al-A'raaf (7:157):

"And He makes good things halaal for them and bad things haraam."

Considering this fact, smoking can either be permissible and good or prohibited and evil.

Thus, we present some of its characteristics and let the person asking the question see himself in which type lies smoking.
There is no disagreement among the physicians and sane people that smoking is harmful for health. It is one of the major causes of lung cancer and other diseases. It is also one of the major causes of death. Since, it is known that the Islamic law prohibits everything that is harmful for a human being. 

Allah said (interpretation of meaning):

"Do not kill yourself. Allah is Merciful unto you." (Surat al-Nisaa' 4:29)

In addition, Allah Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 

"There is no harm or causing of harm (in Islaam)." (Arabic "laa darar wa laa diraar")

He SAWS (peace be upon him) also said:

"A person will not be able to move on the Day of Judgment until he is asked about ... his body as to what he engaged it in."

Smoking also goes against the saying of the Prophet SAWS:

"Your body has a right on you."

There is no disagreement among the physicians and sane people that smoking is harmful for the health of others who inhale the polluted breath of the smoker. Medical research has proven the harmful effects of smoking mothers on their children. The offensive smell caused by smoking is a source of pain to the worshippers of Allah among humans and angels. The angels are offended and suffer from the same things that the human beings suffer from. Allah said (interpretation of the meaning):

"Those who cause harm to believing men and women without any reason do a great sin." (Surat al-Ahzaab, 33:58)

The money that is spent on cigarettes is used on buying a harmful thing and is therefore an extravagance. Allah said (interpretation of the meaning):

"… and do not be extravagant wasters. Those who are extravagant are kinsmen of Satan." (Surat al-Israa' 17:26-27)

Extravagance (in Islam) means spending on something haraam.

Spending money on cigarettes is a waste of resources as well. The Prophet SAWS (peace be upon him) said:

"A person will not be able to move on the Day of Judgment until he is asked about ..... what he owned as to how he spent it."

Considering all that has been presented, it can be clearly seen that smoking is an evil among many others. It is not permissible to indulge in it, or buy and sell it, or even to offer it to others. It is incumbent on a person who is addicted to it that he must make all efforts and get whatever necessary treatment to stop it. If the unbelievers have understood the harm caused by smoking and made laws regarding it, the Muslims should be even more eager to stop it and treat those who are addicted to it.

We ask Allah the Almighty to cure everyone indulging in this evil and help him in giving it up. Allah is the Best Guide to the Right Path.
