Dying and Being Buried in Madinah (Hadith No. 1609)

Bismillah.
Volume 3, Book 30, Number 114:
Narrated Zaid bin Aslam from his father:
Umar (radiallaahu `anhu) said, O Allah! Grant me martyrdom in Your cause, and let my death be in the city of Your Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam)."
Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) commented on this by saying:
It is mustahabb to seek to die in a virtuous land.
Al-Majmoo‘, 5/106.
In fact, he included it in a chapter entitled: Chapter on the recommendation for a person to pray that his death will be in the virtuous land. End quote.
Al-Adhkaar, p. 98
It was narrated that Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said:
Whoever can manage to die in Madinah, let him die there, for I will intercede for whoever dies there.
Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, no. 3917. He said: (|It is) hasan saheeh ghareeb. It was classed as saheeh by al-Nasaa’i in al-Sunan al-Kubra, 1/602; by Ibn ‘Abd al-Haadi in al-Saarim al-Makki, p. 96; and by Shaykh al-Albaani in al-Silsilah al-Saheehah, 4/1034
Al-Teebi said:
He recommended dying there but that is not in the hands of any person; rather that is up to the decree of Allah, may He be exalted. But he enjoined staying there and settling there and not leaving it, and that may be a cause of dying there. This is like the verse in which Allah, may He be exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning): “then die not except in the Faith of Islâm (as Muslims - Islâmic Monotheism)” [al-Baqarah 2:132].
Quoted from Tuhfat al-Ahwadhi, 10/286
Ibn al-Haaj said:
It seems that whoever dies elsewhere then is transported and buried there will have a share of this intercession, but I did not see any shar‘i text (to that effect).
End quote from Fayd al-Qadeer, 6/70

Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam)'s Du`a for Madinah (Hadith No. 1604)

Bismillah.
Volume 3, Book 30, Number 109:
Narrated Anas (radiallaahu `anhu):
The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, "O Allah! Bestow on Medina twice the blessings You bestowed on Mecca."
Based on this du`a of the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) and some other virtues of Madinah, scholars have argued that Madinah is better than Makkah. Others have differed as well saying that if we make Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) the basis for superiority then Yemen and Shaam should also be better than Makkah because the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) repeatedly prayed for them.
Whichever opinion you follow, there's no doubt that Makkah and Madinah both are the best lands on this Earth. Whether Makkah is more superior or Madinah, is a debatable issue. But we know one thing for sure: we love and respect both these cities immensely. May Allah increase our love for them. <3

Du`a - Returning Home (Hadith No. 1546)

Bismillah.
Did you know? There's a du`a that Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) used to make every time he would return to his hometown after a journey - be it a battle, or Hajj, or `Umrah etc.
Volume 3, Book 27, Number 23:
Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Umar (radiallaahu `anhu):
Whenever Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) returned from a Ghazwa, Hajj or 'Umra, he used to say Takbir thrice at every elevation of the ground and then would say, "None has the right to be worshipped but Allah; He is One and has no partner. All the kingdoms is for Him, and all the praises are for Him, and He is Omnipotent. We are returning with repentance, worshiping, prostrating, and praising our Lord. He has kept up His promise and made His slave victorious, and He Alone defeated all the clans of (non-believers)."
Here's the du`a in Arabic. Must memorize it!

لا إله إلا الله وحده لا شريك له له الملك وله الحمد وهو على كل شيء قدير آيبون تائبون عابدون ساجدون لربنا حامدون صدق الله وعده ونصر عبده وهزم الأحزاب وحده

Transliteration: "Laa 'ilaaha 'illallaahu wahdahu laa shareeka lahu, lahul-mulku, wa lahul-hamdu, wa Huwa 'alaa kutti shay 'in Qadeer, 'aa'iboona, taa'iboona, 'aabidoona, lirabbinaa haamidoona, sadaqallaahu wa'dahu, wa nasara 'abdahu, wa hazamal-'ahzaaba wahdahu."

Giving Du`a - Freebie (Hadith No. 1233)

Bismillah.
Hadith no. 1232 (below) is a repeat. Read it here.
Volume 2, Book 24, Number 573:
Narrated Abu Ma'bad (the slave of Ibn Abbas (radiallaahu `anhu)):
Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said to Muadh (radiallaahu `anhu) when he sent him to Yemen, "You will go to the people of the Scripture. So, when you reach there, invite them to testify that none has the right to be worshiped but Allah, and that Muhammad (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) is His Apostle. And if they obey you in that, tell them that Allah has enjoined on them five prayers in each day and night. And if they obey you in that tell them that Allah has made it obligatory on them to pay the Zakat which will be taken from the rich among them and given to the poor among them. If they obey you in that, then avoid taking the best of their possessions, and be afraid of the curse of an oppressed person because there is no screen between his invocation and Allah."

Today's Hadith:

Volume 2, Book 24, Number 574i:
Narrated 'Abdullah bin Abu Aufa (radiallaahu `anhu):
Whenever a person came to the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) with his alms, the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) would say, "O Allah! Send your Blessings upon so and so." My father went to the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) with his alms and the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, "O Allah! Send your blessings upon the offspring of Abu Aufa."
Beautiful Sunnah of the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam): giving du`a to people. It doesn't take much time, nor effort. Be generous with you words. See how the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) prays for the giver's offspring as well? Seekho kuch!

Benefiting the Deceased (Hadith No. 1169)

Bismillah.
Narrated Aisha:
A man said to the Prophet (p.b.u.h), "My mother died suddenly and I thought that if she had lived she would have given alms. So, if I give alms now on her behalf, will she get the reward?" The Prophet replied in the affirmative.
Benefits of du`a, charity and Hajj reach the deceased, according to the consensus of scholars.

Du`a

With regard to du’aa’ and praying for forgiveness, Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“And those who came after them say: ‘Our Lord! Forgive us and our brethren who have preceded us in Faith"
[al-Hashr 59:10]
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
“Pray for forgiveness for your brother and ask that he be made steadfast, for now he is being questioned.”
And he (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
“When you offer the (funeral) prayer for the deceased, then make du’aa’ sincerely for him.”

Charity

With regard to charity, it was narrated in al-Saheehayn from ‘Aa’ishah that a man said to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him): “My mother died suddenly and she did not leave a will, but I think that if she could have spoken she would have given in charity. Will she have a reward if I give in charity on her behalf?” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Yes.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari, no. 1388; Muslim, no. 1004.
And it was narrated by al-Bukhaari from Sa’d ibn ‘Ubaadah that his mother died when he was absent, and he said: “O Messenger of Allaah, my mother has died when I was absent. Will it benefit her if I give in charity on her behalf?” He said: “Yes.” He said: “I ask you to bear witness that my garden that bears fruit is given in charity on her behalf.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 2756.

Hajj

With regard to Hajj, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said to one who asked him about Hajj: “Don’t you think that if your mother had a debt, you would pay it off for her?” She said: “Yes.” He said: “A debt owed to Allaah is more deserving of being paid off.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 6699; Muslim, 1148.

Du`a at Night (Hadith No. 952)

Assalamu`alaykum,
Bismillah.

Volume 2, Book 21, Number 253:
Narrated 'Ubada bin As-Samit:
The Prophet "Whoever gets up at night and says: -- 'La ilaha il-lallah Wahdahu la Sharika lahu Lahu-l-mulk, waLahu-l-hamd wahuwa 'ala kullishai'in Qadir. Alhamdu lil-lahi wa subhanal-lahi wa la-ilaha il-lal-lah wa-l-lahu akbar wa la hawla Wala Quwata il-la-bil-lah.' (None has the right to be worshipped but Allah. He is the Only One and has no partners . For Him is the Kingdom and all the praises are due for Him. He is Omnipotent. All the praises are for Allah. All the glories are for Allah. And none has the right to be worshipped but Allah, And Allah is Great And there is neither Might nor Power Except with Allah). And then says: -- Allahumma, Ighfir li (O Allah! Forgive me). Or invokes (Allah), he will be responded to and if he performs ablution (and prays), his prayer will be accepted."

If you're getting up for Tahajjud at night, awesome. Say these words, make du`a and earn lots of hasanaat (good deeds). Plus, the bonus of getting your prayers accepted. (y)
If you're not getting up, no problem. There's still a way to earn this bonus. Memorize these words:
La ilaha il-lallah Wahdahu la Sharika lahu Lahu-l-mulk, waLahu-l-hamd wahuwa 'ala kullishai'in Qadir. Alhamdu lil-lahi wa subhanal-lahi wa la-ilaha il-lal-lah wa-l-lahu akbar wa la hawla Wala Quwata il-la-bil-lahAllahumma, Ighfir li.
If it so happens that your sleep gets disturbed at some point, or you suddenly wake up at night, just recite these words out of your memory, make a small du`a and go back to sleep. Ta da! =D
And if you're really desperate, you can put up an alarm on your phone for this purpose, provided it is easy for you to go back to sleep after getting disturbed. If not, well get up and pray Tahajjud. :P

Is There Anyone? (Hadith No. 945)

Assalamu`alaykum,
Bismillah.

Volume 2, Book 21, Number 246:
Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah's Apostle (p.b.u.h) said, "Our Lord, the Blessed, the Superior, comes every night down on the nearest Heaven to us when the last third of the night remains, saying: "Is there anyone to invoke Me, so that I may respond to invocation? Is there anyone to ask Me, so that I may grant him his request? Is there anyone seeking My forgiveness, so that I may forgive him?"

If someone knows this, and still misses the opportunity, I do not have words to describe his/her loss.
And I say this to myself before anyone else. -_-

Punishment of the Grave (Hadith No. 858)

Assalamu`alaykum,
Bismillah.

Volume 2, Book 18, Number 858:
Narrated 'Amra bint 'AbdurRahman:
A Jewess came to ask 'Aisha (the wife of the Prophet) about something. She said to her, "May Allah give you refuge from the punishment of the grave." So 'Aisha ' asked Allah's Apostle "Would the people be punished in their graves?" Allah's Apostle after seeking refuge with Allah from the punishment of the grave (and thus replied in the affirmative). Then one day, Allah's Apostle rode to go to some place but the sun eclipsed. He returned in the forenoon and passed through the rear of the dwellings (of his wives) and stood for the (eclipse) prayer, and the people stood behind him. He stood up for a long period and then performed a prolonged bowing which was shorter than the first bowing. Then he raised his head and prostrated. Then he stood up (for the second Raka) for a long while but the standing was shorter than that of the first Raka. Then he performed a prolonged bowing which was shorter than the first one. Then he raised his head and prostrated. Then he stood up for a long time but shorter than the first. Then he performed a prolonged bowing but shorter than the first. Then he raised his head and prostrated and finished the prayer and (then delivered the sermon and) said as much as Allah wished. And then he ordered the people to seek refuge with Allah from the punishment of the grave.

The punishment of the grave (` adhab al-qabr) for the unbelievers and for some of the disobedient believers is established and proven by the Qur'an, narrations that reach the level of certainty ( tawatur) and the consensus of the Ummah ( ijma`), and it is a agreed upon concept among the Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama`ah. Only some members of the deviated sect Mu`tazila and the Khawarij denied the punishment of the grave.
Imaam ibn Al-Qayyim, may Allaah have mercy upon him, dedicated a full chapter in his famous book ‘Ar-Rooh’ (The soul) for this issue, and he began it by stating: "One might ask: what are the reasons behind some people being punished in the grave? There are two answers, a detailed one and a summarized one:
The summarized answer is they get punished because of their ignorance concerning Allaah, their disobedience to Him and their committing what He prohibited; Allaah will not punish a soul which knew Him, loved Him, adhered to what He commanded and refrained from what He prohibited, nor will He punish the body in which such a soul was. The punishment in the grave and in
the Hereafter is an indication of the wrath of Allaah upon His slave; The one who makes Allaah angry in this life and did not repent, and dies while in that state will be punished in the grave according to the extent he angered Allaah; some will be punished for a short while, and others for a long time.
Narrated Anas: The Prophet said, "When a human being is laid in his grave and his companions return and he even hears their footsteps, two angels come to him and make him sit and ask him: What did you use to say about this man, Muhammad ? He will say: I testify that he is Allah's servant and His Apostle. Then it will be said to him, 'Look at your place in the Hell-Fire. Allah has given you a place in Paradise instead of it. “The Prophet added, "The dead person will see both his places. But a non-believer or a hypocrite will say to the angels, 'I do not know, but I used to say what the people used to say! It will be said to him, 'Neither did you know nor did you take the guidance (by reciting the Quran).' Then he will be hit with an iron hammer between his two ears, and he will cry and that cry will be heard by whatever approaches him except human beings and jinns." [Bukhari]

Take some precaution:
From Abu Hurayrah who said: The Prophet said, “When one of you finishes the last tashahhud (testimony of faith in prayer), he should seek refuge in Allah from four things: From the Punishment of Hell, from the Punishment of the Grave, from the trials of life and death, and from the evil trials of the Maseehud-Dajjaal (Anti-Christ).”
‘O Allaah, I take refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, from the torment of the Fire, from the trials and tribulations of life and death and from the evil affliction of the Al-Maseeh Ad-Dajjaal.’

Salat-ul-Kusoof (Ahadith 854 - 857)

Assalamu`alaykum,
Bismillah.

Volume 2, Book 18, Number 854:
Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Amr :
"When the sun eclipsed in the life-time of Allah's Apostle an announcement was made that a prayer was to be offered in congregation."

Volume 2, Book 18, Number 855:
Narrated 'Aisha:
(the wife of the Prophet (p.b.u.h) In the lifetime of the Prophet the sun eclipsed and he went to the Mosque and the people aligned behind him. He said the Takbir (starting the prayer) and prolonged the recitation (from the Quran) and then said Takbir and performed a prolonged bowing; then he (lifted his head and) said, "Sami allahu liman hamidah" (Allah heard him who sent his praises to Him). He then did not prostrate but stood up and recited a prolonged recitation which was shorter than the first recitation. He again said Takbir and then bowed a prolonged bowing but shorter than the first one and then said, "Sami 'a-l-lahu Lyman hamidah Rabbana walak-lhamd, (Allah heard him who sent his praises to Him. O our Sustainer! All the praises are for You)" and then prostrated and did the same in the second Raka; thus he completed four bowing and four prostrations. The sun (eclipse) had cleared before he finished the prayer. (After the prayer) he stood up, glorified and praised Allah as He deserved and then said, "The sun and the moon are two of the signs of Allah. They do not eclipse because of the death or the life (i.e. birth) of someone. When you see them make haste for the prayer." Narrated Az-Zuhri: I said to 'Ursa, "When the sun eclipsed at Medina your brother ('Abdullah bin Az-Zubair) offered only a two-Rakat prayer like that of the morning (Fajr) prayer." 'Ursa replied, "Yes, for he missed the Prophet's tradition (concerning this matter)."

Volume 2, Book 18, Number 856:
Narrated Aisha:
(the wife of the Prophet) On the day when the sun Khasafat (eclipsed) Allah's Apostle prayed; he stood up and said Takbir and recited a prolonged recitation, then he performed a prolonged bowing, then he raised his head and said, "Sami'a-l-lahu Lyman Hamidah," and then remained standing and recited a prolonged recitation which was shorter than the first. Then he performed a prolonged bowing which was shorter than the first. Then he prostrated and prolonged the prostration and he did the same in the second Raka as in the first and then finished the prayer with Taslim. By that time the sun (eclipse) had cleared He addressed the people and said, "The sun and the moon are two of the signs of Allah; they do not eclipse (Yakhsifan) because of the death or the life (i.e. birth) of someone. So when you see them make haste for the prayer."

Volume 2, Book 18, Number 857:
Narrated Abu Bakra:
Allah's Apostle said: "The sun and the moon are two signs amongst the signs of Allah and they do not eclipse because of the death of someone but Allah frightens His devotees with them."

Time

The time for Salaat al-Kusoof lasts from the beginning of the eclipse until it is over, because the Prophet SAWS (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “When you see that, then pray.” (Agreed upon). According to another hadeeth, “If you see anything of that, then pray until it is over.” (Reported by Muslim).
Salaat al-Kusoof should not be done once the eclipse is over, because the time has gone. If an eclipse ends before one knows about it, one does not have to pray, because the reason for this prayer is no longer there.

Method

The way in which Salaat al-Kusoof is done is to pray two Rak’ahs in which Qur’aan is recited aloud, according to the correct one out of the two scholarly opinions. In the first Rak’ah, one should recite al-Faatihah and a long soorah such as Soorat al-Baqarah or the equivalent, then do a long rukoo’, then raise one's head and say, “Sami’a Allaahu liman hamidah, Rabbanaa wa laka’l-hamd (Allaah listens to the one who praises Him; our Lord to You be praise)” after standing upright, as in other prayers. Then one should then recite al-Faatihah and another long soorah, shorter than in the first recitation, equivalent in length to Soorat Aal ‘Imraan. Then one should do another long rukoo’ shorter than the first, and when raising one's head, say, “Sami’a Allaahu liman hamidah, Rabbanaa wa laka’l-hamd hamdan katheeran tayyiban mubaarakan fih, mal’ al-samawaati wa mal’ al-ard wa mal’ ma shi’ta min shay’in ba’d (Allaah listens to the one who praises Him; our Lord to You be praise, much good and blessed praise, filling heaven and earth and whatever You will besides that).” Then he should do two lengthy sujoods, without making the sitting between them too long. Then one should pray the second rak’ah like the first, with two long rukoo’s and two long sujoods, as he did in the first rak’ah. Then he should recite the Tashahhud and say the salaam.

Congregation

It is sunnah to pray Salaat al-Kusoof in jamaa’ah (congregation), because this is what the Prophet SAWS (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did, but it is permissible to pray it individually, as with all other naafil prayers. However, praying it in congregation is better.

Khutbah/Address

It is sunnah for the imaam to address the people after the prayer, and to warn them against negligence and being led astray, and to tell them to make lots of du’aa’ and ask for forgiveness.

Dua

If the prayer ends before the eclipse does, then remember Allaah (dhikr) and call on Him (du’aa’) until the eclipse ends. The prayer should not be repeated. If the eclipse ends before the prayer, then the prayer should be completed quickly, but it should not be stopped or cut off abruptly, because Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “and render not vain your deeds” [Muhammad 47:33]. The prayer should be at the time of the eclipse, because the Prophet SAWS (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “… until it (the eclipse) is over…” and he also said, “… until what you are going through is over …”
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah said: “Sometimes eclipses last for a long time, and sometimes for a short time, depending on how much of the sun or moon is eclipsed. The entire sun or moon may be eclipsed, or only half of it, or one-third. If it is a total eclipse, then the prayer should last long enough for all of al-Baqarah or something of similar length to be recited in the first rak’ah, and in the next rak’ah a shorter recitation is made. There are saheeh ahaadeeth narrated from the Prophet SAWS (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), as we have mentioned, and it is prescribed to shorten the prayer if the reason for it [i.e., the eclipse] is no longer there. So if it is known that the eclipse will not last for long, or if it started to get less, one should still pray, but the prayer should be shortened. This is the opinion of the majority of scholars, because this prayer is prescribed for a specific reason, and if the reason is no longer there and the eclipse is over, one should not pray.”

Shaam, Yemen and Najd (Hadith No. 846)

Assalamu`alaykum,
Bismillah.

Volume 2, Book 17, Number 846:
Narrated Ibn 'Umar:
(The Prophet) said, "O Allah! Bless our Sham (Syria) and our Yemen (Egypt)." People said, "Our Najd as well." The Prophet again said, "O Allah! Bless our Sham and Yemen." They said again, "Our Najd as well." On that the Prophet said, "There will appear earthquakes and afflictions, and from there will come out the side of the head of Satan."

NOTE: Prophet (SAW) prayed for Syria and Egypt. Just goes to say that Allah will help Syria and take them out of the conditions they're in currently, as he did the people of Egypt. Allah-ul-Musta`aan! <3
The Arabic word nejd/najd literally means "upland" and was once applied to a variety of regions within the Arabian Peninsula. However, the most famous of these was the central region of the Peninsula roughly bounded on the west by the mountains of the Hejaz and Yemen and to the east by the historical region of Bahrain and the north by Iraq and Syria.

In the early years of Islam, Najd was seen as a troubled land of insurgencies because its nomadic tribes were not immediately receptive to Prophet Muhammed’s message. This early resistance is partly responsible for Muhammad’s criticism of Najd; which is seen in the hadith that records him praying aloud and asking:
“O God, give us blessings in our Syria, O God, give us blessings us in our Yemen.” Someone called out, “And in our Najd?” But the Prophet ignored him. The Prophet repeated his request for blessings upon Syria and Yemen, and again the onlooker shouted, “And in our Najd?” Finally, the Prophet replied, “From that place will come only earthquakes, conflicts, and the horns of Satan.”
Furthermore, when the Najdi tribes did convert to Islam they interpreted it solely as an alliance with Muhammad, thus after his death, they were among the first to rebel against Caliph Abu Bakrand refuse to pay the alms tax (zakat) to Medina. The hostilities between the Najdi tribes and the Muslims escalated when Musaylima (d. 12/633), a Najdi from the Banu Hanifah tribe, tried to defeat the caliphate by claiming to be a Prophet and sending troops to destroy the Muslim army in the year 12/633. During this fight, known as the Battle of al Aqraba, the Najdi troops killed numerous companions but were eventually defeated and forced to accept Median control. [Wikipedia]

According to Al-Mulhib, Prophet (SAW) didn't pray for the people of Najd because of their evils and so they'd lessen their prosecutions on people. And Allah knows best.

And he, Ibn Battaal, says: قرن الشيطان, 'side of the head of Satan', is his party and his army.
Ka`b said: Dajjal will emerge from Iraq.
`Amr ibn al-`Aas said: Dajjal will emerge from the core of Kufa (a city in Iraq).
[Taken from Ibn Battaal's commentary on Sahih al-Bukhari]

P.S. according to the scholars of the past, earthquake is among the signs of Allah and one can offer Salah during it, just as Prophet (SAW) offered Salah when he saw the eclipse.
This doesn't mean that you start praying in a building during an earthquake, which might just fall off. Out in the open would be a good option.
Personal opinion: if salah is not possible at the time, make du`a. Do istighfaar, and ask Allah for protection. As Prophet (SAW) did while strong winds blew.

When the Strong Winds Blow.. (Hadith No. 843)

Assalamu`alaykum,
Bismillah.

Volume 2, Book 17, Number 843:
Narrated Anas:
Whenever a strong wind blew, anxiety appeared on the face of the Prophet (fearing that wind might be a sign of Allah's wrath).

Strong winds, earthquakes, thunderbolts, hurricanes, floods etc. are all signs of Allah's anger and wrath. What should we feel/do while experiencing them?
Should we ignore and continue with our work? Or should we be scared and worried? How to react?
Prophet (SAW)'s face would show anxiety whenever a strong wind blew. He would make du`a to Allah.
Allaahumma 'innee 'as'aluka khayrahaa, wa 'a'oothu bika min sharrihaa.
"O Allah , I ask You for the good of it and seek refuge in You against its evil."
[Reference: Abu Dawud 4/326, Ibn Majah 2/1228. See also Al-Albani, Sahih Ibn Mjjah 2/305]

Allaahumma 'innee 'as'aluka kthayrahaa, wa khayra maa feehaa, wa khayra maa 'ursilat bihi wa a'oothu bika min sharrihaa, wa sharri maa feehaa, wa sharri maa 'ursilat bihi.
"O Allah, I ask You for the good of it, for the good of what it contains , and for the good of what is sent with it . I seek refuge in You from the evil of it, from the evil of what it contains, and from the evil that is sent with it."
[Reference: Muslim 2/616, Al-Bukhari 4/76]

Must learn these du`as and recite them whenever needed inshaAllah.
Wassalam.

When it Rains.. (Hadith No. 841)

Assalamu`alaykum,
Bismillah.

Volume 2, Book 17, Number 841:
Narrated Aisha:
Whenever Allah's Apostle saw the rain, he used to say, "O Allah! Let it be a strong fruitful rain."
Dua for when it rains..

For those who are new to this du`a, this is how you say it:
Allahumma sayyiban naafi`an

Plus, when it rains, make all the du`a that you want. Because it's one of those special times when Allah accepts the du`as of His slaves. :)

Raising Hands in Du`a (Hadith No. 840)

Assalamu`alaykum,
Bismillah.

Volume 2, Book 17, Number 840:
Narrated Anas bin Malik
The Prophet never raised his hands for any invocation except for that of Istisqa' and he used to raise them so much that the whiteness of his armpits became visible.
(Note: It may be that Anas did not see the Prophet raising his hands, but it is narrated that the Prophet used to raise his hands for invocations other than Istisqa.)

When to riase hands, and when not to raise hands?
It is important to note that du’aa’ is an act of worship, and every act of worship should only be done on the basis of evidence (daleel). The basic principle here is that the hands should be raised when making du’aa’, except when the du’aa’ is part of another act of worship, in which case raising the hands is regarded as an additional action (and should not be done). Examples of such acts of worship include salaah (prayer), khutbah (sermon), tawaaf (circumambulation of the Ka’bah), sa’ee (running between al-Safaa and Marwah), etc. Salaah includes du’aa’ at the beginning of the prayer, in rukoo’ (bowing), when standing up from rukoo’, in the two sajdahs (prostrations) and in the sitting between the two prostrations – but whoever raises his hands in these places is considered to have committed an act of bid’ah (reprehensible innovation). The same applies to raising the hands when making du’aa’ on the minbar, except in the case of istisqaa’ (praying for rain). And the same applies when making du’aa’ when doing tawaaf or sa’ee.
When there is evidence to show that it is permissible to raise the hands in certain situation, then there is no dispute. Any du’aa’ which has not been narrated in a report and which is not part of another act of worship is regarded as general du’aa’; in this case there is nothing wrong with raising the hands. It was narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) spoke of a man who raised his hands to the sky and said, “O Lord, O Lord,” whilst his food was haraam, his drink was haraam, his clothing was haraam, he had been nourished with haraam, so how could his du’aa’ be answered?
And the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Allaah feels shy to let His slave raise his hands to Him and bring them back empty.” – and other ahaadeeth.

Requesting Someone to make Du`a & Tawassul (Ahadith 820 - 821)

Assalamu`alaykum,
Bismillah.
Volume 2, Book 17, Number 820:
Narrated 'Abdullah bin Dinar:
My father said, "I heard Ibn 'Umar reciting the poetic verses of Abu Talib:
"And a white (person) (i.e. the Prophet) who is requested to pray for rain and who takes care of the orphans and is the guardian of widows."
Salim's father (Ibn 'Umar) said, "The following poetic verse occurred to my mind while I was looking at the face of the Prophet (p.b.u.h) while he was praying for rain. He did not get down till the rain water flowed profusely from every roof-gutter:
"And a white (person) who is requested to pray for rain and who takes care of the orphans and is the guardian of widows"... And these were the words of Abu Talib."
Volume 2, Book 17, Number 123:
Narrated Anas:
Whenever drought threatened them, 'Umar bin Al-Khattab, used to ask Al-Abbas bin 'Abdul Muttalib to invoke Allah for rain. He used to say, "O Allah! We used to ask our Prophet to invoke You for rain, and You would bless us with rain, and now we ask his uncle to invoke You for rain. O Allah ! Bless us with rain."* And so it would rain.
*It is of great importance to notice that it is permissible for one to request a living religious person to invoke Allah on his behalf; but if you ask Allah through a dead or an absent (person etc.) then it is not allowed. But it is absolutely forbidden to ask or request the dead for anything, it is regarded as Shirk (to worship others along with Allah).
Another thing is Tawassul. It means 'seeking to draw close'. Allah says in the Qur'an (interpretation of the meaning):
…[they] desire means of access to their Lord…” [al-Isra’ 17:57]
i.e. means of drawing close to Him.
There are two types of Tawassul:
  1. Correct Islamic Tawassul
    • through acts of worship which He loves and which please Him
    • by means of Allah's Names and Attributes
    • by means of faith and Tawheed
    • asking Allah by virtue of the best deeds that one has done
  2. Forbidden Tawassul or Bid`ah
    • by means of things He does not like and that do not please Him (words/deeds/beliefs). Example: calling on dead people, equating them with Allah in attributes.
