Bismillah.

Volume 3, Book 31, Number 148:

Narrated 'Aisha and Um Salama (radiallaahu `anhumaa):

At times Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) used to get up in the morning in the state of Janaba after having sexual relations with his wives. He would then take a bath and fast.

The fast of one who has intercourse with his wife at night and wakes up in the morning in a state of junub is still valid, as is the fast of one who becomes junub in his sleep, whether at night or during the day. There is nothing wrong with delaying ghusl until just before dawn. Rather fasting is invalidated by having intercourse during the day in Ramadaan, from just before dawn until after sunset.

Usually what happens is, being in the state of janaabah, people tend to delay ghusl (due to embarrassment or other reasons) and miss Fajr. This is not acceptable. One must make sure to pray on time as well.

Volume 3, Book 29, Number 65:

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas (radiallaahu `anhu):

A man was crushed to death by his she-camel and was brought to Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) who said, "Give him a bath and shroud him, but do not cover his head, and do not bring any perfume near to him, as he will be resurrected reciting Talbiya."

Volume 3, Book 29, Number 66:

Narrated 'Abdullah bin Hunain:

Abdullah bin Al-Abbas (radiallaahu `anhu) and Al-Miswar bin Makhrama (radiallaahu `anhu) differed at Al-Abwa'; Ibn 'Abbas (radiallaahu `anhu) said that a Muhrim could wash his head; while Al-Miswar (radiallaahu `anhu) maintained that he should not do so. 'Abdullah bin 'Abbas (radiallaahu `anhu) sent me to Abu Aiyub Al-Ansari (radiallaahu `anhu) and I found him bathing between the two wooden posts (of the well) and was screened with a sheet of cloth. I greeted him and he asked who I was. I replied, "I am 'Abdullah bin Hunain and I have been sent to you by Ibn 'Abbas (radiallaahu `anhu) to ask you how Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) used to wash his head while in the state of lhram." Abu Aiyub Al-Ansari (radiallaahu `anhu) caught hold of the sheet of cloth and lowered it till his head appeared before me, and then told somebody to pour water on his head. He poured water on his head, and he (Abu Aiyub) rubbed his head with his hands by bringing them from back to front and from front to back and said, "I saw the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) doing like this."

Hence proven, that a Muhrim may take a shower and wash his hair as well.

It is permissible for the Muslim to wash his entire body in order to cool down if it is hot. This will give him more energy in order to perform this act of worship. He should take care when washing so that nothing falls from his hair or skin.

P.S. it's interesting to know the way Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) used to wash his hair - moving his hands front to back and then back to front. Unknown Sunnah, eh?

Volume 2, Book 13, Number 723:

Narrated Aisha:

(the wife of the Prophet) The people used to come from their abodes and from Al-'Awali (i.e. outskirts of Medina up to a distance of four miles or more from Medina). They used to pass through dust and used to be drenched with sweat and covered with dust; so sweat used to trickle from them. One of them came to Allah's Apostle who was in my house. The Prophet said to him, "I wish that you keep yourself clean on this day of yours (i.e. take a bath)."

Volume 2, Book 13, Number 724:

Narrated Yahya bin Said:

I asked 'Amra about taking a bath on Fridays. She replied, " Aisha said, 'The people used to work (for their livelihood) and whenever they went for the Jumua prayer, they used to go to the mosque in the same shape as they had been in work. So they were asked to take a bath on Friday.' "

Now read on for the excellence or supremacy of the Friday ghusl. Yes, we know it's mustahabb (recommended), but we should also know why.

Volume 2, Book 13, Number 700:

Narrated 'Abdullah bin Umar:

Allah's Apostle (p.b.u.h) said, "Anyone of you attending the Friday (prayers) should take a bath."

Volume 2, Book 13, Number 701:

Narrated Ibn 'Umar:

While Umar bin Al-Khattab was standing and delivering the sermon on a Friday, one of the companions of the Prophet, who was one of the foremost Muhajirs (emigrants) came. 'Umar said to him, "What is the time now?" He replied, "I was busy and could not go back to my house till I heard the Adhan. I did not perform more than the ablution." Thereupon 'Umar said to him, "Did you perform only the ablution although you know that Allah's Apostle (p.b.u.h) used to order us to take a bath (on Fridays)?"

Volume 2, Book 13, Number 702:

Narrated Abu Said Al-Khudri:

Allah's Apostle (p.b.u.h) said, "The taking of a bath on Friday is compulsory for every male (Muslim) who has attained the age of puberty."

Volume 2, Book 13, Number 703:

Narrated Abu Said:

I testify that Allah's Apostle said, "The taking of a bath on Friday is compulsory for every male Muslim who has attained the age of puberty and (also) the cleaning of his teeth with Siwak, and the using of perfume if it is available." Amr (a sub-narrator) said, "I confirm that the taking of a bath is compulsory, but as for the Siwak and the using of perfume, Allah knows better whether it is obligatory or not, but according to the Hadith it is as above.")

Volume 2, Book 13, Number 704:

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah's Apostle (p.b.u.h) said, "Any person who takes a bath on Friday like the bath of Janaba and then goes for the prayer (in the first hour i.e. early), it is as if he had sacrificed a camel (in Allah's cause); and whoever goes in the second hour it is as if he had sacrificed a cow; and whoever goes in the third hour, then it is as if he had sacrificed a horned ram; and if one goes in the fourth hour, then it is as if he had sacrificed a hen; and whoever goes in the fifth hour then it is as if he had offered an egg. When the Imam comes out (i.e. starts delivering the Khutba), the angels present themselves to listen to the Khutba."

Volume 2, Book 13, Number 705:

Narrated Abu Huraira:

While 'Umar (bin Al-Khattab) was delivering the Khutba on a Friday, a man entered (the mosque). 'Umar asked him, "What has detained you from the prayer?" The man said, "It was only that when I heard the Adhan I performed ablution (for the prayer)." On that 'Umar said, "Did you not hear the Prophet saying: 'Anyone of you going out for the Jumua prayer should take a bath'?".

Volume 2, Book 13, Number 706:

Narrated Salman-Al-Farsi:

The Prophet (p.b.u.h) said, "Whoever takes a bath on Friday, purifies himself as much as he can, then uses his (hair) oil or perfumes himself with the scent of his house, then proceeds (for the Jumua prayer) and does not separate two persons sitting together (in the mosque), then prays as much as (Allah has) written for him and then remains silent while the Imam is delivering the Khutba, his sins in-between the present and the last Friday would be forgiven."

Why would you NOT take a bath on Friday, then?

Volume 1, Book 12, Number 817:

Narrated Abu Said Al-Khudri:

The Prophet said, "Ghusl (taking a bath) on Friday is compulsory for every Muslim reaching the age of puberty."

Fuqahaa' (experts in Islamic jurisprudence) say it's mustahabb (recommended) to do ghusl on Fridays.
