Searching for a Title (Hadith No. 1173)

Bismillah.
Narrated 'Urwa:
When the wall fell on them (i.e. graves) during the caliphate of Al-Walid bin 'Abdul Malik, the people started repairing it, and a foot appeared to them. The people got scared and thought that it was the foot of the Prophet. No-one could be found who could tell them about it till I ('Urwa) said to them, "By Allah, this is not the foot of the Prophet but it is the foot of Umar."
Aisha narrated that she made a will to 'Abdullah bin Zubair, "Do not bury me with them (the Prophet and his two companions) but bury me with my companions (wives of the Prophet (p.b.u.h) ) in Al-Baqi as I would not like to be looked upon as better than I really am (by being buried near the Prophet)."
About the first part of this Hadith.. I'm still trying to get the background information on the incident. So no comment yet. Will update the post as soon as I have something solid inshaAllah.
Anyway, this incident is taken as proof that bodies of martyrs don't get degenerated by the soil. Allahu A`lam [Allah knows best].
As for the second part, Aishah (RA) gave up her position (near the Prophet [SAW]) where she wanted to be buried, because Umar (RA) had asked her if he could be buried there. She preferred him over herself saying that "I would not like to be looked upon as better than I really am". SubhanAllah. [More on this tomorrow inshaAllah.]

Prophet [SAW]'s Grave (Hadith No. 1172)

Bismillah.
Hadith no. 1171 (below) is a repeat. Read it here.
Narrated 'Aisha:
Allah's Apostle in his fatal illness said, "Allah cursed the Jews and the Christians, for they built the places of worship at the graves of their prophets." And if that had not been the case, then the Prophet's grave would have been made prominent before the people. So (the Prophet ) was afraid, or the people were afraid that his grave might be taken as a place for worship.

Grave of the Prophet (SAW):

Narrated Abu Bakr bin 'Aiyash :
Sufyan At-Tammar told me that he had seen the grave of the Prophet elevated and convex.
Two types of graves: shaqq & lahd.
The shaqq means that a trench is dug in the middle of the grave to suit the size of the deceased, and its sides are built with bricks so that it will not collapse on the deceased, and the deceased is placed in it on his right side facing the qiblah, then this trench is covered with stones or the like and the ceiling is raised a little so that it will not touch the deceased, then the soil is filled in.
The lahd (niche) means that a place is dug at the bottom of the grave on the side that is closest to the qiblah, in which the deceased is placed on his right side facing the qiblah, then this hole is filled in with bricks behind the deceased, then the dirt is filled in.
Lahd, for example.
Both the lahd and the shaqq are permissible according to scholarly consensus, but the lahd is preferable, because this is what was done with the grave of the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). Muslim (966) narrated that Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said, during the illness of which he died: Make a lahd (niche) for me, and set up bricks over me, as was done for the Messenger of Allaah (S).

Believers in the Grave (Ahadith 1149 - 1150)

Bismillah.
Narrated Al-Bara' bin 'Azib :
The Prophet (p.b.u.h) said, "When a faithful believer is made to sit in his grave, then (the angels) come to him and he testifies that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and Muhammad is Allah's Apostle. And that corresponds to Allah's statement: Allah will keep firm those who believe with the word that stands firm . . . (14.27).
Narrated Shu'ba:
Same as above and added, "Allah will keep firm those who believe . . . (14.27) was revealed concerning the punishment of the grave."
Here's the background of this ayah. Must read to get the whole picture. Click here.
Who knows how much time we're going to spend in our graves? Tens, hundreds, thousands, millions of years? It'd be nice if we enjoy that time, no? May Allah protect us from the punishment of the grave.

Destiny and Fate (Hadith No. 1143)

Bismillah.
Volume 2, Book 23, Number 444:
Narrated 'Ali:
"We were accompanying a funeral procession in Baqi-al-Gharqad. The Prophet came to us and sat and we sat around him. He had a small stick in his hand then he bent his head and started scraping the ground with it. He then said, "There is none among you, and not a created soul, but has place either in Paradise or in Hell assigned for him and it is also determined for him whether he will be among the blessed or wretched." A man said, "O Allah's Apostle! Should we not depend on what has been written for us and leave the deeds as whoever amongst us is blessed will do the deeds of a blessed person and whoever amongst us will be wretched, will do the deeds of a wretched person?" The Prophet said, "The good deeds are made easy for the blessed, and bad deeds are made easy for the wretched." Then he recited the Verses:- "As for him who gives (in charity) and is Allah-fearing And believes in the Best reward from Allah." (92.5-6)
There's evidence here regarding sitting down near graves and admonishing people. [#YouthClub]
Sheikh Muhammed Salih Al-Munajjid:
Belief in destiny and fate is one of the basic beliefs of Islam. It means that Allaah is the Knower of all things and the Creator of all things; nothing exists outside of His will and decree. He wrote down all things with Him in al-Lawh al-Mahfooz (the Preserved Tablet), and this was fifty thousand years before He created the universe. Everything in the universe, every creature and the things it does, is the creation of Allaah. Whatever He wills happens, and whatever He does not will does not happen. If something happens to a person, it could not have missed him, and if something does not happen to him, it could not have happened to him. A person is not forced to obey or disobey Allaah – he has free will as befits his state, but it is subject to the will of the Creator. And Allaah knows best.

Palm Leaf-Stalks or Flowers on Graves? (Hadith No. 1142)

Bismillah.
Volume 2, Book 23, Number 443:
Narrated Ibn Abbas:
The Prophet once passed by two graves, and those two persons (in the graves) were being tortured. He said, "They are being tortured not for a great thing (to avoid). One of them never saved himself from being soiled with his urine, while the other was going about with calumnies (to make enmity between friends). He then took a green leaf of a date-palm tree split it into two pieces and fixed one on each grave. The people said, "O Allah's Apostle! Why have you done so?" He replied, "I hope that their punishment may be lessened till they (the leaf) become dry."
These two persons were getting punishment of the grave not because they committed some huge crimes, but just because one wasn't very careful regarding his cleanliness and purity, and the other kept himself busy making enmity between friends.
Why are we so sure that our grave will be a spacious one? That the Earth will welcome us warmly? That the insects and worms won't harm us? That the amount of time we spend lying in our graves (however long that may be) will be a 'good' time? What makes us so sure?
Coming to the part where Prophet (SAW) put leaves of the palm tree over the graves, hoping that their punishment will be reduced. Know, that we're not supposed to do it. One, we don't know who's getting punished in their graves and who isn't. Two, companions didn't do it, so we won't either.
Not sure what good these flowers will do to the person inside, but they definitely could've been put to a better use. Like a vase? Or just a gift for someone? :P
Shaykh Ibn Baaz said:
That is not prescribed in Islam, rather it is bid’ah (an innovation), because the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) only placed the palm-leaf stalk on the two graves of the people whose torment he was made aware of; he did not place them on any other graves. From that we know that it is not permissible to put them on graves, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever introduces anything into this matter of ours (Islam) that is not part of it, will have it rejected.” According to a version narrated by Muslim: “Whoever does anything that is not part of this matter of ours (Islam), will have it rejected.”
Similarly, it is not permissible to write on graves or to place flowers on them, because of the two hadeeth quoted above, and because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) forbade plastering over graves, erecting structures over them, sitting on them and writing on them.

Jabir (RA)'s Father (Ahadith 1133 - 1135)

Bismillah.
Volume 2, Book 23, Number 432:
Narrated Ibn Abbas:
The Prophet said, "Allah has made Mecca a sanctuary (sacred place) and it was a sanctuary before me and will be so after me. It was made legal for me (to fight in it) for a few hours of the day. None is allowed to uproot its thorny shrubs or to cut its trees or to chase its game or to pick up its fallen things except by a person who announces it publicly." On that Al-Abbas said (to the Prophet), "Except Al-Idhkhir for our goldsmiths and for our graves." And so the Prophet added, "Except Al-Idhkhir. " And Abu Huraira narrated that the Prophet said, "Except Al-Idhkhir for our graves and houses." And Ibn Abbas said, "For their goldsmiths and houses."
Hadith no. 1131 (above) is a repeat. Read it here.
Volume 2, Book 23, Number 433:
Narrated Jabir bin 'Abdullah:
Allah's Apostle came to Abdullah bin Ubai (a hypocrite) after his death and he has been laid in his pit (grave). He ordered (that he be taken out of the grave) and he was taken out. Then he placed him on his knees and threw some of his saliva on him and clothed him in his (the Prophet's) own shirt. Allah knows better (why he did so). 'Abdullah bin Ubai had given his shirt to Al-Abbas to wear. Abu Harun said, "Allah's Apostle at that time had two shirts and the son of 'Abdullah bin Ubai said to him, 'O Allah's Apostle! Clothe my father in your shirt which has been in contact with your skin.' ' Sufyan added, "Thus people think that the Prophet clothed 'Abdullah bin Tubal in his shirt in lieu of what he (Abdullah) had done (for Al Abbas, the Prophet's uncle.)"
Hadith no. 1132 (above) is also a repeat. Read it here.

About Jabir (RA)'s father..

Volume 2, Book 23, Number 434:
Narrated Jabir:
When the time of the Battle of Uhud approached, my father called me at night and said, "I think that I will be the first amongst the companions of the Prophet to be martyred. I do not leave anyone after me dearer to me than you, except Allah's Apostle's soul and I owe some debt and you should repay it and treat your sisters favorably (nicely and politely)." So in the morning he was the first to be martyred and was buried along with another (martyr). I did not like to leave him with the other (martyr) so I took him out of the grave after six months of his burial and he was in the same condition as he was on the day of burial, except a slight change near his ear.
Volume 2, Book 23, Number 435:
Narrated Jabir:
A man was buried along with my father and I did not like it till I took him (i.e. my father) out and buried him in a separate grave.
Volume 2, Book 23, Number 436:
Narrated Jabir bin 'Abdullah:
The Prophet collected every two martyrs of Uhud (in one grave) and then he would ask, "Which of them knew the Quran more?" And if one of them was pointed out for him as having more knowledge, he would put him first in the Lahd. The Prophet said, "I will be a witness on these on the Day of Resurrection." Then he ordered them to be buried with their blood on their bodies and he did not have them washed.
  • Digging up the grave of a deceased person - not allowed. There are certain conditions in this matter. Read this for details.
  • Burying two persons in the same grave - not allowed, unless it's a necessity (as was after Uhud). Details to be found in the link above.
  • Does the Earth disintegrate the bodies of martyrs? Some say yes, some say it was exclusive to the martyrs of Uhud only. And Allah knows best.
  • How to advise your son about dealing with affairs after your death? Learn it from Abdullah (RA) [Jabir (RA)'s father]:
"I do not leave anyone after me dearer to me than you, except Allah's Apostle's soul and I owe some debt and you should repay it and treat your sisters favorably (nicely and politely)."
    • He was leaving behind his whole family, but he asked Jabir (RA) to take care of his most beloved person - Prophet (SAW). <3
    • He was worried about the debts that he hadn't paid yet. Seems like he was way too eager to meet Allah, and that too, after finishing all worldly matters.
    • He admonishes Jabir (RA) to take care of his sisters afterwards.
Note that Jabir (RA) was about seventeen years old at that time. Respecting his father's wishes, he married an older woman, hoping that she'll be like a mother to his sisters. He was young, he could've married someone his own age, to enjoy his life. And that's exactly what Prophet (SAW) said to him..
Jabir b. Abdillah reported that once he was on an expedition with the Prophet salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam, and when they were close to the city of Madinah, he sped on his mount. The Prophetsalla Allahu alayhi wa sallam asked him why he was in such a hurry to return home. Jabir replied, "I am recently married!" The Prophet salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam asked, "To an older lady or a younger one?" [the Arabic could also read: "To a widow or a virgin?"], to which he replied, "A widow." The Prophet salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam said, "But why didn't you marry a younger girl, so that you could play with her, and she could play with you, and you could make her laugh, and she could make you laugh?" He said, "O Messenger of Allah! My father died a martyr at Uhud, leaving behind daughters, so I did not wish to marry a young girl like them, but rather an older one who could take care of them and look after them." The Prophet salla Allahu alayhi wa salam replied, "You have made the correct choice...  Jabir said, "So when we were about to enter the city, the Prophet salla Allahu 'alayhi wa sallamsaid to me, 'Slow down, and enter at night, so that she who has not combed may comb her hair, and she who has not shaved may shave her private area.' Then he said to me, 'When you enter upon her, then be wise and gentle.'"

In the Grave.. (Hadith No. 1120)

Bismillah.
Hadith no. 1118 is a repeat. It's about Najashi's death and funeral prayer. Read on it here.
Volume 2, Book 23, Number 421:
Narrated Abu Huraira:
A black person, a male or a female used to clean the Mosque and then died. The Prophet (p.b.u.h) did not know about it . One day the Prophet remembered him and said, "What happened to that person?" The people replied, "O Allah's Apostle! He died." He said, "Why did you not inform me?" They said, "His story was so and so (i.e. regarded him as insignificant)." He said, "Show me his grave." He then went to his grave and offered the funeral prayer.
Read about delayed funeral prayer here.
One of the questions we'll be asked in our graves is about the Messenger (SAW). And we'll only be able to say what we 'really' believed and acted upon. Read further to see how a believer will answer and how a non-believer/hypocrite will answer the same question.
Volume 2, Book 23, Number 422:
Narrated Anas:
The Prophet said, "When a human being is laid in his grave and his companions return and he even hears their foot steps, two angels come to him and make him sit and ask him: What did you use to say about this man, Muhammad? He will say: I testify that he is Allah's slave and His Apostle. Then it will be said to him, 'Look at your place in the Hell-Fire. Allah has given you a place in Paradise instead of it.' " The Prophet added, "The dead person will see both his places. But a non-believer or a hypocrite will say to the angels, 'I do not know, but I used to say what the people used to say!' It will be said to him, 'Neither did you know nor did you take the guidance (by reciting the Quran).' Then he will be hit with an iron hammer between his two ears, and he will cry and that cry will be heard by whatever approaches him except human beings and jinns."
Another version of this narration has been posted previously. Here's the link.
May Allah make us true followers of Muhammad (SAW)), and may we be able to answer the questions in grave correctly and see our places in Paradise right there. May we rise as the ummati(s) of Muhammad (SAW) on the Day of Judgement, and may we be served from Al-Kauthar that day. May we get his company in Jannat-ul-Firdaws. May we really love him.

Graves and Mosques (Hadith No. 1113)

Bismillah.
Volume 2, Book 23, Number 414:
Narrated 'Urwa:
Aisha said, "The Prophet in his fatal illness said, 'Allah cursed the Jews and the Christians because they took the graves of their Prophets as places for praying."' Aisha added, "Had it not been for that the grave of the Prophet (p.b.u.h) would have been made prominent but I am afraid it might be taken (as a) place for praying.
The scholars have discussed this issue, in the past and more recently, and they refuted those who quote the fact that the grave of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) is inside his mosque as evidence that it is permissible to take graves as places of worship, or to include graves in mosques.
Shaykh ‘Abd al-‘Azeez ibn Baaz (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:
There is a specious argument put forward by those who worship graves, namely the fact that the grave of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) is in his mosque. The answer to that is that the Sahaabah (may Allaah be pleased with them) did not bury him in his mosque, rather they buried him in the house of ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her). When al-Waleed ibn ‘Abd al-Malik expanded the Mosque of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) at the end of the first century, he incorporated the room into the mosque, but he did wrong thereby, and some of the scholars denounced him for that, but he believed that there was nothing wrong with it for the sake of expanding the mosque.
It is not permissible for a Muslim to take that as evidence that mosques may be built over graves, or that people may be buried inside mosques, because that goes against the saheeh ahaadeeth, and because it is a means that may lead to shirk by associating the occupants of the graves in worship with Allaah.  End quote.

Lowering into the Grave (Hadith No. 1073)

Bismillah.
Volume 2, Book 23, Number 374:
Narrated Anas bin Malik:
We were (in the funeral procession) of one of the daughters of the Prophet and he was sitting by the side of the grave. I saw his eyes shedding tears. He said, "Is there anyone among you who did not have sexual relations with his wife last night?" Abu Talha replied in the affirmative. And so the Prophet told him to get down in the grave. And so he got down in her grave.
Who is the most entitled of people to lower the deceased into the grave?
Shaykh Muhammad ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:
The one who is more entitled to do that is the one whom the deceased wanted to do that for him, if he expressed a preference. If he did not express a preference, then it should be the next of kin. If there is one who is knowledgeable then he is more entitled, and if there is no one who is knowledgeable, then he may learn from one who is knowledgeable, and the one who is knowledgeable may direct the one who has no knowledge to carry out this task.
It is not essential for the one who lowers the deceased into the grave to be a mahram of the woman. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) commanded Abu Talhah (may Allaah be pleased with him) to go down into the grave of his (the Prophet’s) daughter and bury her in his presence and in the presence of her husband ‘Uthmaan ibn ‘Affaan (may Allaah be pleased with him). (The hadeeth was narrated by al-Bukhaari, 1342).

Don't Let Your Houses Become Graves (Ahadith 978 - 979)

Bismillah.

Volume 2, Book 21, Number 279:
Narrated Mahmud bin Ar-rabi' Al-Ansari,
that he remembered Allah's Apostle and he also remembered a mouthful of water which he had thrown on his face, after taking it from a well that was in their house. Mahmud said that he had heard Itban bin Malik, who was present with Allah's Apostle in the battle of Badr saying, "I used to lead my people at Bani Salim in the prayer and there was a valley between me and those people. Whenever it rained it used to be difficult for me to cross it to go to their mosque. So I went to Allah's Apostle and said, 'I have weak eye-sight and the valley between me and my people flows during the rainy season and it becomes difficult for me to cross it; I wish you would come to my house and pray at a place so that I could take that place as a praying place.' Allah's Apostle said, 'I will do so.' So Allah's Apostle and Abu Bakr came to my house in the (next) morning after the sun had risen high. Allah's Apostle asked my permission to let him in and I admitted him. He did not sit before saying, 'Where do you want us to offer the prayer in your house?' I pointed to the place where I wanted him to pray. So Allah's Apostle stood up for the prayer and started the prayer with Takbir and we aligned in rows behind him; and he offered two Rakat, and finished them with Taslim, and we also performed Taslim with him. I detained him for a meal called "Khazir" which I had prepared for him.--("Khazir" is a special type of dish prepared from barley flour and meat soup)--
When the neighbors got the news that Allah's Apostle was in my house, they poured it till there were a great number of men in the house. One of them said, 'What is wrong with Malik, for I do not see him?' One of them replied, 'He is a hypocrite and does not love Allah and His Apostle.' On that Allah's Apostle said, 'Don't say this. Haven't you seen that he said, 'None has the right to be worshipped but Allah for Allah's sake only.' The man replied, 'Allah and His Apostle know better; but by Allah, we never saw him but helping and talking with the hypocrites.' Allah's Apostle replied, 'No doubt, whoever says "None has the right to be worshipped but Allah", and by that he wants the pleasure of Allah, then Allah will save him from Hell." Mahmud added, "I told the above narration to some people, one of whom was Abu Aiyub, the companion of Allah's Apostle in the battle in which he (Abu Aiyub) died and Yazid bin Mu'awiya was their leader in Roman Territory. Abu Aiyub denounced the narration and said, 'I doubt that Allah's Apostle ever said what you have said.' I felt that too much, and I vowed to Allah that if I remained alive in that holy battle, I would (go to Medina and) ask Itban bin Malik if he was still living in the mosque of his people. So when he returned, I assumed Ihram for Hajj or 'Umra and then I proceeded on till I reached Medina. I went to Bani Salim and Itban bin Malik, who was by then an old blind man, was leading his people in the prayer. When he finished the prayer, I greeted him and introduced myself to him and then asked him about that narration. He told that narration again in the same manner as he had narrated it the first time."

Volume 2, Book 21, Number 280:
Narrated Ibn 'Umar,
Allah's Apostle said, "Offer some of your prayers in your houses and do not make them graves."
  • One may pray at home if the weather conditions are severe (for men).
  • Treat your guests well. Food is good hospitality. (y)
  • When someone invites you over for a purpose, stick to that purpose.
  • NEVER judge someone and/or his Imaan. You don't know what's in their heart.
  • Whoever says la ilaha illa-llah and seeks Allah's pleasure, Allah will admit him into Paradise inshaAllah. Prophet (SAW)'s words, not mine.
  • Pray at your homes some of your prayers. Don't let them become graves.
Graves symbolize death. Meaning, your house is dead unless Allah is remembered in it. Bring it to life with Allah's name!

Punishment of the Grave (Hadith No. 858)

Assalamu`alaykum,
Bismillah.

Volume 2, Book 18, Number 858:
Narrated 'Amra bint 'AbdurRahman:
A Jewess came to ask 'Aisha (the wife of the Prophet) about something. She said to her, "May Allah give you refuge from the punishment of the grave." So 'Aisha ' asked Allah's Apostle "Would the people be punished in their graves?" Allah's Apostle after seeking refuge with Allah from the punishment of the grave (and thus replied in the affirmative). Then one day, Allah's Apostle rode to go to some place but the sun eclipsed. He returned in the forenoon and passed through the rear of the dwellings (of his wives) and stood for the (eclipse) prayer, and the people stood behind him. He stood up for a long period and then performed a prolonged bowing which was shorter than the first bowing. Then he raised his head and prostrated. Then he stood up (for the second Raka) for a long while but the standing was shorter than that of the first Raka. Then he performed a prolonged bowing which was shorter than the first one. Then he raised his head and prostrated. Then he stood up for a long time but shorter than the first. Then he performed a prolonged bowing but shorter than the first. Then he raised his head and prostrated and finished the prayer and (then delivered the sermon and) said as much as Allah wished. And then he ordered the people to seek refuge with Allah from the punishment of the grave.

The punishment of the grave (` adhab al-qabr) for the unbelievers and for some of the disobedient believers is established and proven by the Qur'an, narrations that reach the level of certainty ( tawatur) and the consensus of the Ummah ( ijma`), and it is a agreed upon concept among the Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama`ah. Only some members of the deviated sect Mu`tazila and the Khawarij denied the punishment of the grave.
Imaam ibn Al-Qayyim, may Allaah have mercy upon him, dedicated a full chapter in his famous book ‘Ar-Rooh’ (The soul) for this issue, and he began it by stating: "One might ask: what are the reasons behind some people being punished in the grave? There are two answers, a detailed one and a summarized one:
The summarized answer is they get punished because of their ignorance concerning Allaah, their disobedience to Him and their committing what He prohibited; Allaah will not punish a soul which knew Him, loved Him, adhered to what He commanded and refrained from what He prohibited, nor will He punish the body in which such a soul was. The punishment in the grave and in
the Hereafter is an indication of the wrath of Allaah upon His slave; The one who makes Allaah angry in this life and did not repent, and dies while in that state will be punished in the grave according to the extent he angered Allaah; some will be punished for a short while, and others for a long time.
Narrated Anas: The Prophet said, "When a human being is laid in his grave and his companions return and he even hears their footsteps, two angels come to him and make him sit and ask him: What did you use to say about this man, Muhammad ? He will say: I testify that he is Allah's servant and His Apostle. Then it will be said to him, 'Look at your place in the Hell-Fire. Allah has given you a place in Paradise instead of it. “The Prophet added, "The dead person will see both his places. But a non-believer or a hypocrite will say to the angels, 'I do not know, but I used to say what the people used to say! It will be said to him, 'Neither did you know nor did you take the guidance (by reciting the Quran).' Then he will be hit with an iron hammer between his two ears, and he will cry and that cry will be heard by whatever approaches him except human beings and jinns." [Bukhari]

‘O Allaah, I take refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, from the torment of the Fire, from the trials and tribulations of life and death and from the evil affliction of the Al-Maseeh Ad-Dajjaal.’

Reality of Punishment and Reward of Grave

By Allama Ibtisam Elahi Zaheer

Now a days many people think that a person will get rewards and punishments of his good and bad deeds only on the day of judgement and after his death he will not be accountable for his deeds .It is a misconception which has nothing to do with the message of Quran and authentic hadiths.
Allah swt has said in Holy Quran in surah At-Takathur:

The mutual rivalry for piling up of worldly things diverts you, Until you visit the graves (i.e. till you die). (At-Takathur 102:1-2)

These verses are indicating that a man will see result of his deeds when he will die and enter the grave. If some one thinks that death will finish his activities and these verses are not indicating any thing about rewards and punishment of grave than he should read this verse of Holy Quran:

The Fire; they are exposed to it, morning and afternoon, and on the Day when the Hour will be established (it will be said to the angels): "Cause Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people to enter the severest torment!" (Ghafir 40:46)

This verse is a clear indicator of the fact that Pharaoh and his supporters are bearing fire of hell before the day of judgement for their transgression .
Similarly there are many hadiths which indicate the punishment and reward of grave
Usman radi Allahu anhu narrates that the Messenger of Allah (Salal laho aliehi wasalam) said:

"Indeed the grave is the first stopping place for the Hereafter; so if he is saved therein, then what comes after is easier than it. And if he is not saved there from, then that which comes after is harder." At-Tirmidhee, Ibn Maajah,al-Haakim: Hasan)

This hadith mentions that the person will start his journey comfortably in grave if he is pious and will bear torment of grave if he is a sinner.
Similarly in another hadith Imam Abu Dawood ,Imam Tirmidhi and Imam Al Hakim narrates from Fadalah bin Ubaid radi Allahu anhu and Imam Ahmad narrates from Uqbah ibn Amir radi Allahu anhu that the Messenger of Allaah (Salal laho aliehi wasalam) said:

"Everyone who dies then his actions are sealed except for the one guarding the border in the way of Allah his actions continue to increase for him until the Day of Judgement and he is saved from the trials of the Grave." (Saheeh.)

This hadith clearly tells us that the person who struggled in the way of ALLAH he will get continuous benefits and rewards even before day of judgement.

In another hadith Kab ibn Malik radi Allahu anhu narrates that the Messenger of Allah (Salal laho aliehi wasalam) said:

"The souls of the believers (martyrs) are inside green birds in the trees of Paradise until Allah returns them to their bodies on the Day of Judgement." (At-Tabraanee in 'al kabeer)

This hadith clearly tells the reward of martyrs before the day of judgement.
In another hadith Umm Khalid bint Khalid ibn Saeed ibn al Aas radi Allaha anha narrates that the Messenger of Allaah (Salal laho aliehi wasalam) said:
"Seek Allaah's protection from the Punishment of the Grave, since punishment of the Grave is a fact/true." ( At-Tabraanee in al-Kabeer :Saheeh)

This hadith once again tells that punishment of grave is a reality.
In another hadith Anas radi Allahu anhu narrates that the Messenger of Allah (Salal laho aliehi wasalam) said:

"When a human being is laid in his grave and his companions return and he even hears their footsteps, two angels come to him and make him sit and ask him: What did you used to say about this man, Muhammad? He will say: I testify that he is Allah's slave and His Apostle. Then it will be said to him, 'Look at your place in the Hell-Fire. Allaah has changed for you a place in Paradise instead of it.' The Prophet (Salal laho aliehi wasalam) added, "The dead person will see both his places. But a non-believer or a hypocrite will say to the angels, 'I do not know, but I used to say what the people used to say! It will be said to him, 'neither did you know nor did you take the guidance (from Quran and Sunnah). Then he will be hit with an iron hammer between his ears, and he will cry and that cry will be heard by whatever approaches him except human beings and jinns." (Saheeh: Al-Bukhaaree (2/422), Muslim, Ahmad, Abu Daud, an-Nisaa.ee)

It means that punishment of grave is physical reality because their cries is listened by all the creations except human beings and Jinns.
In another hadith Abu hurairah radi Allahu anhu narrates that the Messenger of Allah (Salal laho aliehi wasalam) said:
"When the dead person is buried two black-blue angels come to him, one called al-Munkar and the other called an-Nakeer, and they say to him: 'What had you used to say about this man?' So he says what he used to say: 'Allah's slave and His Messenger, I bear witness that no one has the right to be worshipped except Allah and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.' So they say: 'Indeed we knew that you (would) say that.' Then his grave is widened for him to the extent of seventy cubits by seventy, then it is made light for him, then it is said: ' Sleep.' So he says: 'I should go to my family and inform them.' So they say: 'Sleep as the newly married sleeps whom no-one awakes except his favourite wife.' Until Allah raises him up from that place of sleep. And if he is a hypocrite he says: 'I heard the people saying something so I said it too, I don't know.' So they say: 'We knew that you (would) say that.' So it is said to the earth: 'Crush him', so he is crushed until his cross over and he remains in the state of torture until Allah raises him up from that resting place." (At-Tirmidhee :Hasan)

This hadith indicates that pious person will sleep in a peaceful manner where as the hypocrite and non believer will be tortured continuously before the day of judgement.

In another hadith Al-Baraa bin Azib radi Allahu anhu narrates:

We went out with the Prophet of Allah (Salal laho aliehi wasalam) accompanying the bier of a man of the Ansar. When he reached his grave, it was not yet dug. So the Prophet of Allah (Salal laho aliehi wasalam) sat down and we also sat down around him as if birds were over our heads. He had in his hand a stick by which he was scratching the ground. He then raised his head and said:
Seek refuge in Allaah from the punishment of the grave. He said it twice or thrice. The version of Jarir adds here: He hears the beat of their sandals when they go back, and at that moment he asked: O so and so! Who is your Lord, what is your religion, and who is your Prophet? Hannad's version has: Two angels will come to him, make him sit up, and ask him: Who is your Lord? He will reply: My Lord is Allah. They will ask him: What is your religion? He will reply: My religion is Islaam. They will ask him: What is your opinion about the man who was sent on a mission among you? He will reply: He is the Apostle of Allah. They will ask: Who made you aware of this? He will reply: I read Allah's Book, believed in it, and considered it true, which is verified by Allah's word: "Allah establishes those who believe with the word that stands firm in this world and the next." The agreed version goes: Then a crier will call from the heaven: My servant has spoken the truth, so spread a bed for him from Paradise, clothe him in Paradise, and open a door for him into Paradise. So some of its air and perfume will come to him, and a space will be made for him as far as the eye can see. He also mentioned the death of the infidel, saying: His spirit will be restored to his body, two angels will come to him, make him sit up and ask him: Who is your Lord? He will reply: Alas, alas! I do not know. They will ask him: What is your religion? He will reply: Alas, alas! I do not know. They will ask: Who is this man who was sent on a mission among you? He will reply: Alas, alas! I do not know. Then a crier will call from the heaven: He has lied, so spread a bed for him from Hell, clothe him from Hell and open for him a door into Hell. Then some of its heat and pestilential wind will come to him, and his grave will become restricted, so his ribs will be pressed together. Jarir's version adds: One who is blind and dumb will then be placed in charge of him, having a sledge hammer such that if a mountain were struck with it, it would become dust. He will give him a blow with it which will be heard by everything between the east and the west except by men and jinn, and he will become dust. Then his spirit will be restored to him. (Ahmad, Abu Dawud (3/4735) ,Ibn Khuzaimah, al-Haakim, al-Baihaqee 'Shu'ab ul-Imaan', ad-Diyaa :Saheeh)

The details mentioned in this hadith is indicating the punishment and reward of transgressors before the day of Judgement
In another hadith Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu narrates that the Messenger of Allah (Salal laho aliehi wasalam) said:

"The righteous man sits in his grave and is not alarmed or afraid, then it is said to him (by angels): 'In (what state) were you?' So he says: 'In the (state of) Islam.' So it is said to him: 'What is this man?' So he says: 'Muhammad the Messenger of Allah who came to us with clear signs from Allah, so we believed that.' Then it is said to him: 'Have you seen Allah?' So he says: 'It does not behove any man that he sees Allaah.' So an opening is made for him in the direction of the Fire, so he sees it, some parts of it smashing into others, and it is said to him: 'Look at what Allah, the Exalted, has saved you from.' Then an opening is made for him in the direction of Paradise, and he looks to its brilliance and what is therein and it is said to him: 'This is your place.' And it is said to him: 'You were upon certain Faith and died upon it and upon it you will be raised up, if Allah wills.' And the wicked man sits in his grave alarmed and terrified and so it is said to him: 'In what state were you?' So he says: 'I do not know.' So it is said to him: 'Who is this man?' So he says: 'I heard the people saying something so I said it!' So an opening is made for him in the direction of Paradise and he sees its brilliance and what is therein, and it is said to him: 'Look at what Allah has refused you.' Then an opening is made for him in the direction of the Fire, so he sees it crashing against itself and it is said: 'This is your place, you lived upon doubt and died upon it and you will be raised up upon it, if it is Allah's will." ( Ibn Maajah ,Saheeh)

This hadith indicates that a pious man before going to paradise will see his destination in the grave and the sinner will see hell fire before the day of Judgement.
Conclusion:
It is proved both from Quran and authentic hadiths that punishment and reward of grave is a reality and the people who deny this reality actually deny the clear verses of Quran and authentic sayings of Rasool sala laho aliehi waslaam may Allah guide us all to right path and make us believe in all the realities mentioned in Quran and authentic hadiths.
