Hajj of Boys (Ahadith 1575 - 1578)

Bismillah.
Volume 3, Book 29, Number 80:
Narrated Ibn 'Abbas (radiallaahu `anhu):
The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) sent me (to Mina) with the luggage from Jam' (i.e. Al-Muzdalifa) at night.

Volume 3, Book 29, Number 81:
Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Abbas (radiallaahu `anhu):
I came riding on my she-ass and had (just) then attained the age of puberty. Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) was praying at Mina. I passed in front of a part of the first row and then dismounted from it, and the animal started grazing. I aligned with the people behind Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) (The sub-narrator added that happened in Mina during the Prophet's Hajjat-ul-wada.)

Volume 3, Book 29, Number 82:
Narrated As-Sa'ib bin Yazid (radiallaahu `anhu):
(While in the company of my parents) I was made to perform Hajj with Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) and I was a seven-year-old boy then.

Volume 3, Book 29, Number 83:
Narrated Al-Ju'aid bin 'AbdurRahman:
I heard 'Umar bin 'Abdul Aziz telling about As-Sa'ib bin Yazid that he had performed Hajj (while carried) with the belongings of the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam).
Children who have not yet reached the age of puberty will be rewarded for the good deeds they do. Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with them both), said: “A woman lifted up a child and said, ‘O Messenger of Allaah, will his Hajj (pilgrimage) be counted?’ He said, ‘Yes, and you will be rewarded.’” [Muslim]
The author of Mawaahib al-Jaleel said, concerning children entering ihraam (sacred state) for Hajj and ‘Umrah:
“The scholars do not differ concerning the fact that children will be rewarded for whatever acts of obedience (to Allaah) they do, and will be let off for any bad deeds that they do, and any bad deeds they do deliberately will be counted as mistakes. It says in Mukhtasar al-Waadihah: ‘Hajj is not an obligation for boys and girls until boys reach puberty and girls begin menstruating, but there is nothing wrong with taking them for Hajj. It is recommended (mustahabb), and the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did so.’”
Then he reported that Talhah ibn Musarrif said: “It was one of the customs of the Muslims to take their children for Hajj and expose them to the mercy of Allaah.”
Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr said in al-Tamheed that it is encouraged to take children for Hajj, and that the majority of scholars say this. He also said: “It is nothing strange that a child should earn reward and status in the Hereafter for his salaah (prayers), zakaah (paying poor-due), Hajj and other good deeds if he does them as they should be done, (because this is) grace and mercy from Allaah, just as Allaah shows mercy to the dead by rewarding them for acts of charity done on their behalf by the living. Do you not see that they (the scholars) are agreed that a child should be commanded to pray when he reaches the age of understanding and that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) led Anas and the orphan in prayer? Most of the salaf (pious predecessors) said that zakaah has to be paid on the property of orphans, and it is impossible that they would not be rewarded for that. Their guardians and the one who does this on their behalf will also certainly be rewarded, as will the one who takes them for Hajj, as a blessing and mercy from Allaah. It was reported that ‘Umar said: ‘Children’s good deeds will be recorded and their bad deeds will not be recorded.’ I do not know of anyone whose opinion is worth following who said anything to the contrary.”

To Kill in Makkah (Hadith No. 1567)

Bismillah.
Hadith no. 1566 (below) is a repeat. Read it here.
Volume 3, Book 29, Number 71:
Narrated Ibn 'Abbas (radiallaahu `anhu):
The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) fixed Dhul-Hulaifa as the Miqat (the place for assuming Ihram) for the people of Medina, and Qaran-al-Manazil for the people of Najd, and Yalamlam for the people of Yemen. These Mawaqit are for those people and also for those who come through these Mawaqit (from places other than the above-mentioned) with the intention of (performing) Hajj and Umra. And those living inside these Mawaqit can assume Ihram from the place where they start; even the people of Mecca can assume Ihram from Mecca.

Today's Hadith:

Volume 3, Book 29, Number 72:
Narrated Anas bin Malik (radiallaahu `anhu):
Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) entered Mecca in the year of its Conquest wearing an Arabian helmet on his head and when the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) took it off, a person came and said, "Ibn Khatal is holding the covering of the Ka'ba (taking refuge in the Ka'ba)." The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, "Kill him."
Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) was most probably not in Ihraam when he entered Makkah during the conquest, as it says in the narration that he was wearing an Arabian helmet on his head. Scholars have differed in their opinions:
  • It is permissible to enter Makkah without Ihraam - without the intention of performing Hajj/`Umrah
  • This was special to the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) and no one else is allowed to enter Makkah without Ihraam. Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) had said:
"Beware! (Mecca is a sanctuary) Verily! Fighting in Mecca was not permitted for anyone before me nor will it be permitted for anyone after me. It (war) in it was made legal for me for few hours or so on that day."
Ibn Khatal, as mentioned in stories (having unreliable sources), killed a Muslim slave and then apostatized. The only thing having a strong back to it is that he was a poet and used to recite verses abusing the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam). On the day of Makkah's Conquest, Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) had ordered for a few men to be killed. Ibn Khatal was one of them.
There's a lot of discussion on this matter. Some people are trying to prove how unfair the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) was in this decision of his, and others are trying to prove that this guy deserved it. I feel uninterested because I don't need a reason to believe in the correct judgement of the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam). If you feel the need to read up on it, avoid Google. Too many pseudo-Islamic-content-pushers out there. :P
Read books of reliable scholars, or indulge in discussions with the knowledgeable ones.
Side note, this proves how Makkah is NOT a sanctuary for criminals.

Ihraam - Exceptions? (Ahadith 1562 - 1564)

Bismillah.
Volume 3, Book 29, Number 67:
Narrated Ibn 'Abbas (radiallaahu `anhu):
I heard the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) delivering a sermon at 'Arafat saying, "If a Muhrim does not find slippers, he could wear Khuffs (but he has to cut short the Khuffs below the ankles), and if he does not find an Izar (a waist sheet for wrapping the lower half of the body) he could wear trousers."

Volume 3, Book 29, Number 68:
Narrated Abdullah (radiallaahu `anhu):
Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) was asked what sort of clothes a Muhrim should wear. He replied, "He should not wear a shirt, turbans, trousers, a hooded cloak, or a dress perfumed with saffron or Wars; and if slippers are not available he can wear Khuffs but he should cut them so that they reach below the ankles.

Volume 3, Book 29, Number 69:
Narrated Ibn Abbas (radiallaahu `anhu):
The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) delivered a sermon at 'Arafat and said, "Whoever does not get an Izar can wear trousers, and whoever cannot get a pair of shoes can wear Khuffs."

Socks:

It is not permissible for a man who is in ihraam to wear socks, but it is permissible for a woman to do that.
The Standing Committee was asked: what is the ruling on wearing socks on the feet and doing tawaaf al-qudoom in them during Hajj, and doing the tawaaf of ‘Umrah in them during ‘Umrah?
They replied:
It is not permissible for men to wear socks when in ihraam for Hajj or ‘Umrah. If he needs to wear them because of sickness etc, then he must offer a ransom (fidyah), which is to fast for three days, or to feed six poor persons, giving each one half a saa’ of dates or similar food, or to sacrifice a sheep.
Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daa’imah li’l-Buhooth al-‘Ilmiyyah wa’l-Ifta’, 11/183.

Trousers:

"Whoever does not find an Izar (chadar) can wear trousers". I doubt if there's anyone today who fits this description. Going for Hajj, spending huge sums of money, one just might find enough to buy two plain white sheets for his Ihraam, right?

Khuffs:

Dealt with already. See this.

Ihraam - Shower? (Hadith No. 1561)

Bismillah.
Hadith no. 1560 (below) is a repeat. Read it here.
Volume 3, Book 29, Number 65:
Narrated Ibn 'Abbas (radiallaahu `anhu):
A man was crushed to death by his she-camel and was brought to Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) who said, "Give him a bath and shroud him, but do not cover his head, and do not bring any perfume near to him, as he will be resurrected reciting Talbiya."

Today's Hadith:

Volume 3, Book 29, Number 66:
Narrated 'Abdullah bin Hunain:
Abdullah bin Al-Abbas (radiallaahu `anhu) and Al-Miswar bin Makhrama (radiallaahu `anhu) differed at Al-Abwa'; Ibn 'Abbas (radiallaahu `anhu) said that a Muhrim could wash his head; while Al-Miswar (radiallaahu `anhu) maintained that he should not do so. 'Abdullah bin 'Abbas (radiallaahu `anhu) sent me to Abu Aiyub Al-Ansari (radiallaahu `anhu) and I found him bathing between the two wooden posts (of the well) and was screened with a sheet of cloth. I greeted him and he asked who I was. I replied, "I am 'Abdullah bin Hunain and I have been sent to you by Ibn 'Abbas (radiallaahu `anhu) to ask you how Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) used to wash his head while in the state of lhram." Abu Aiyub Al-Ansari (radiallaahu `anhu) caught hold of the sheet of cloth and lowered it till his head appeared before me, and then told somebody to pour water on his head. He poured water on his head, and he (Abu Aiyub) rubbed his head with his hands by bringing them from back to front and from front to back and said, "I saw the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) doing like this."
Hence proven, that a Muhrim may take a shower and wash his hair as well.
It is permissible for the Muslim to wash his entire body in order to cool down if it is hot. This will give him more energy in order to perform this act of worship. He should take care when washing so that nothing falls from his hair or skin.
Standing Committee for Academic Research and Issuing Fatwas, Fataawa al-Lajnah, 11/184
P.S. it's interesting to know the way Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) used to wash his hair - moving his hands front to back and then back to front. Unknown Sunnah, eh?

Ihraam for Women (Hadith No. 1559)

Bismillah.
Volume 3, Book 29, Number 64:
Narrated 'Abdullah bin Umar (radiallaahu `anhu):
A person stood up and asked, "O Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam)! What clothes may be worn in the state of Ihram?" The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) replied, "Do not wear a shirt or trousers, or any headgear (e.g. a turban), or a hooded cloak; but if somebody has no shoes he can wear leather stockings provided they are cut short off the ankles, and also, do not wear anything perfumed with Wars or saffron, and the Muhrima (a woman in the state of Ihram) should not cover her face, or wear gloves."
Ihraam for men has been discussed in various posts before. As for women, they're allowed to wear anything (that must cover their `awrah properly), except for perfume. And they must not cover their faces/hands except in case of necessity.
Women must uncover their faces and hands when they enter ihraam for Hajj or ‘Umrah. At this time, they are forbidden to wear niqaab and gloves, because the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The woman who is in ihraam must not wear niqaab or gloves.”
If a woman needs to cover her face because men are passing close by her, or she is beautiful and is sure that men are looking at her, she should drop a part of head covering over her face, because of the hadeeth of ‘Aa’ishah in which she said, “Riders were passing by us, and we were in ihraam with the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), so when they came near, each of us would lower her jilbaab over her face, and when they went away we would uncover our faces again.”
Al-Juzayri said, reporting from them: “A woman may cover her face for a necessary reason, such as non-mahram men passing close by her, and the fact that (the cloth) will touch her face does not matter. This is to make it easy and alleviate hardship.” (Al-Fiqh ‘ala’l-Madhaahib al-Arba’ah, 1/645).

Marriage in Ihraam (Hadith No. 1558)

Bismillah.
Volume 3, Book 29, Number 63:
Narrated Ibn 'Abbas (radiallaahu `anhu):
The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) married Maimuna (radiallaahu `anhaa) while he was in the state of Ihram, (only the ceremonies of marriage were held).
This opinion, as discussed by scholars, was that of Ibn `Abbas (radiallaahu `anhu) only, who was most likely mistaken in this. Maimuna (radiallaahu `anhaa) herself says she did not get married in the state of Ihraam. See Abu Dawud: 1843 and Muslim: 1411.
Also, `Uthman (b. 'Affan) reported it directly from Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) that he said:
A Muhrim should neither marry (in that state) nor make the proposal of marriage.
[Sunan an-Nasa'i 2844, Sahih Muslim 1409]
However, there's an exception. Someone who has exited the first stage of Ihraam may get married [contract only], however, intercourse will only be permissible once second stage of Ihraam has been exited completely as well. [IslamQA]

Hijaamah (Ahadith 1584 - 1585)

Bismillah.
Volume 3, Book 29, Number 61:
Narrated Ibn Abbas (radiallaahu `anhu):
Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) was cupped while he was in a state of Ihram.

Volume 3, Book 29, Number 62:
Narrated Ibn Buhaina:
The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam), while in the state of Ihram, was cupped at the middle of his head at Liha-Jamal.
Hijaamah (cupping) can be done in Ihraam, and obviously outside of it as well.

What is Hijaamah?

The word hijaamah (cupping) comes for the word hajm which means sucking, as in the phrase hajama al-sabiy thadya ummihi (the infant suckled his mother’s breast). Al-Hajjaam means the cupper, hijaamah is the profession of cupping.
Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with them both) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
Healing is to be found in three things: drinking honey, the knife of the cupper, and cauterization of fire.
(Reported by al-Bukhaari, 10/136).

Benefits of Hijaamah:

Cupping has real benefits in treating many diseases, past and present. The diseases which have been treated by cupping and for which it has been of benefit by Allaah’s Leave include the following:
  1. Circulatory diseases
  2. Treating blood pressure and infection of the heart muscle
  3. Diseases of the chest and trachea
  4. Headache and pains in the eyes
  5. Pain in the neck and stomach, and rheumatic pain in the muscles
  6. Some diseases of the heart and chest, and pain in the joints
In addition, cupping may offer a unique treatment which may reduce pain, and it does not have any side-effects.
More on it here.
P.S. ideal time for hijaamah is the last third of the month. And Rajab's last 10 days are here (almost). Planning to get it done soon? :D

To Kill in Ihraam (Ahadith 1575 - 1578)

Bismillah.
Volume 3, Book 29, Number 52:
Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Umar (radiallaahu `anhu):
Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, "It is not sinful of a Muhrim to kill five kinds of animals."

Volume 3, Book 29, Number 53:
One of the wives of the Prophet narrated:
The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, "A Muhrim can kill (five kinds of animals.)"

Volume 3, Book 29, Number 54:
Narrated Hafsa (radiallaahu `anhaa):
Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, "It is not sinful (of a Muhrim) to kill five kinds of animals, namely: the crow, the kite, the mouse, the scorpion and the rabid dog."

Volume 3, Book 29, Number 55:
Narrated Aisha (radiallaahu `anhaa):
Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, "Five kinds of animals are harmful and could be killed in the Haram (Sanctuary). These are: the crow, the kite, the scorpion, the mouse and the rabid dog."
Al-Qaasim ibn Muhammad said: I heard ‘Aa’ishah, the wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), say: I heard the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say:
“There are four things which are faasiq (corrupt) and may be killed at all times, whether one is in a state of ihraam [for Hajj and ‘Umrah] or not: kites, crows, mice/rats and mad dogs.”
Narrated by Muslim, 1198.
Ibn ‘Abbaas said: a mouse (or rat) came and started dragging the wick (of the lamp). It threw it in front of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), onto the mat on which he was sitting, and it burnt a hole the size of a dirham. He said, “When you go to sleep, extinguish your lamps, for the Shaytaan will tell creatures like this to do something like this so that you will be burned.” Narrated by Abu Dawood, 5427.
The mice or rats that may live in people’s houses are among the harmful creatures or vermin (fuwaysiqah) which the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) commanded us to kill in all situations, whether we are in ihraam or not. The root of the word fuwaysiqah (fasaqa) means to deviate from the right way and to do harm; hence a sinner is described as “faasiq”, and these animals are called fawaasiq, as a metaphor for their evil nature; or it was said that it is because it is not haraam to kill them, whether one is in ihraam or not, for they have no sanctity or protection in any circumstances.
Read more on killing rats and mice, and an interesting comment on the Mickey Mouse here. :P

Game and Ihraam (Hadith No. 1574)

Bismillah.
Volume 3, Book 29, Number 51:
Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Abbas (radiallaahu `anhu):
From As-Sa'b bin Jath-thama Al-Laithi that the latter presented an onager to Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) while he was at Al-Abwa' or at Waddan, and he refused it. On noticing the signs of some unpleasant feeling of disappointment on his (As-Sab's) face, the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said to him, "I have only returned it because I am Muhrim."
Apparently there's ikhtilaaf (difference) between today's hadith and yesterday's post. And due to this ikhtilaaf, scholars have also differed in their opinions regarding the ruling for a muhrim eating game. One group says a muhrim is allowed to eat game because of Abu Qatada's hadith, and the other group says a muhrim must not eat game because of the above hadith and this ayah:
..forbidden is (the pursuit of) land-game as long as you are in a state of Ihram (for Hajj or 'Umrah). [5:96]
The correct and balanced opinion, that of most scholars (including Imaam Maalik, Shafi`i and Ahmad etc.), is that a muhrim is allowed to eat the game that was not hunted for him specifically. But the game that was hunted for him, as it was done in the above mentioned hadith, he cannot eat it, nor accept it.
If it so happens that someone offers you something that's forbidden in Ihraam while you're in Ihraam, you may refuse them politely, saying something like "a muhrim is not allowed to have such-and-such". Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) refused politely as well, and when he saw the person getting disappointed, he told him the reason. Remember, accepting something that's forbidden in Ihraam while you're in Ihraam for the fear of offending the other person is not allowed. Fear disobeying Allah more.

Hajj - Fidyah (Ahadith 1564 - 1567)

Bismillah.
Volume 3, Book 28, Number 41:
Narrated 'Abdur-Rahman bin Abu Layla:
Ka'b bin 'Ujra (radiallaahu `anhu) said that Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said to him (Ka'b), "Perhaps your lice have troubled you?" Ka'b replied, "Yes! O Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam)." Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, "Have your head shaved and then either fast three days or feed six poor persons or slaughter one sheep as a sacrifice."

Volume 3, Book 28, Number 42:
Narrated Ka'b bin 'Ujra (radiallaahu `anhu):
Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) stood beside me at Al-Hudaibiya and the lice were falling from my head in great number. He asked me, "Have your lice troubled you?" I replied in the affirmative. He ordered me to get my head shaved. Ka'b (radiallaahu `anhu) added, "This Holy Verse:--'And if any of you is ill, or has ailment in his scalp (2.196), etc. was revealed regarding me. "The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) then ordered me either to fast three days, or to feed six poor persons with one Faraq (three Sas) (of dates), or to slaughter a sheep, etc (sacrifice) whatever was available.

Volume 3, Book 28, Number 43:
Narrated 'Abdullah bin Ma'qal:
I sat with Ka'b bin 'Ujra (radiallaahu `anhu) and asked him about the Fidya. He replied, "This revelation was revealed concerning my case especially, but it is also for you in general. I was carried to Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) and the lice were falling in great number on my face. The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, "I have never thought that your ailment (or struggle) has reached to such an extent as I see. Can you afford a sheep?" I replied in the negative. He then said, "Fast for three days, or feed six poor persons each with half a Sa of food." (1 Sa = 3 Kilograms approx.)

Volume 3, Book 28, Number 44:
Narrated Abdur-Rahman bin Abu Layla:
(Reporting the speech of Ka'b bin Ujra (radiallaahu `anhu)) Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) saw him (i.e. Ka'b) while the lice were falling on his face. He asked (him), "Have your lice troubled you?" He replied in the affirmative. So, he ordered him to get his head shaved while he was at Al-Hudaibiya. At that time they were not permitted to finish their Ihram, and were still hoping to enter Mecca. So, Allah revealed the verses of Al-Fidya. Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) ordered him to feed six poor persons with one Faraq of food or to slaughter one sheep (as a sacrifice) or to fast for three days.
Here's the full ayah that was revealed in Ka`b (radiallaahu `anhu)'s case:
(196. And complete Hajj and `Umrah for Allah. But if you are prevented, then sacrifice a Hady that you can afford, and do not shave your heads until the Hady reaches the place of sacrifice. And whosoever of you is ill or has an ailment on his scalp (necessitating shaving), he must pay a Fidyah (ransom) of either fasting or giving Sadaqah or a sacrifice. Then if you are in safety and whosoever performs the `Umrah (in the months of Hajj), before (performing) the Hajj, he must slaughter a Hady such as he can afford, but if he cannot (afford it), he should fast for three days during Hajj and seven days after his return, making ten days in all. This is for him whose family is not present at Al-Masjid Al-Haram (i.e., non-resident of Makkah). And fear Allah much and know that Allah is severe in punishment.)
He was asked to give fidyah (ransom) because he had to do something that wasn't allowed in Ihraam i.e. shave his hair.
Ayyub (one of the narrators of the Hadith) commented, "I do not know which alternative was stated first.'' The wording of the Qur'an begins with the easiest then the more difficult options: "Pay a Fidyah of fasting (three days), feeding (six poor persons) or sacrificing (an animal).'' Meanwhile, the Prophet advised Ka`b with the more rewarding option first, that is, sacrificing a sheep, then feeding six poor persons, then fasting three days. Each Text is suitable in its place and context, all the thanks and praises are due to Allah.

Prevented from Makkah (Ahadith 1556 - 1563)

Bismillah.
Correct answer to yesterday's question: Safiyah bint Abu `Ubaid was Ibn `Umar (radiallaahu `anhu)'s wife.

Kitaab-ul-Muhsar [Book of Pilgrims Prevented from Completing the Pilgrimage] starts today.

Volume 3, Book 28, Number 33:
Narrated Nafi:
When Abdullah bin Umar (radiallaahu `anhu) set out for Mecca intending to perform Umra, at the time of afflictions, he said, "If I should be prevented from reaching the Kaba, then I would do the same as Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) did, so I assume the lhram for Umra as Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) assumed the Ihram for Umra in the year of Hudaibiya."

Volume 3, Book 28, Number 34:
Narrated Nafi:
That Ubaidullah bin 'Abdullah and Salim bin 'Abdullah informed him that they told Ibn 'Umar (radiallaahu `anhu) when Ibn Az-Zubair was attacked by the army, saying "There is no harm for you if you did not perform Hajj this year. We are afraid that you may be prevented from reaching the Kaba." Ibn 'Umar (radiallaahu `anhu) said "We set out with Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) and the non-believers of Quraish prevented us from reaching the Ka'ba, and so the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) slaughtered his Hadi and got his head shaved." Ibn 'Umar (radiallaahu `anhu) added, "I make you witnesses that I have made 'Umra obligatory for me. And, Allah willing, I will go and then if the way to Ka'ba is clear, I will perform the Tawaf, but if I am prevented from going to the Ka'ba then I will do the same as the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) did while I was in his company." Ibn 'Umar (radiallaahu `anhu) then assumed Ihram for Umra from Dhul-Hulaifa and proceeded for a while and said, "The conditions of 'Umra and Hajj are similar and I make you witnesses that I have made 'Umra and Hajj obligatory for myself." So, he did not finish the Ihram till the day of Nahr (slaughtering) came, and he slaughtered his Hadi. He used to say, "I will not finish the Ihram till I perform the Tawaf, one Tawaf on the day of entering Mecca (i.e. of Safa and Marwa for both 'Umra and Hajj)."

Volume 3, Book 28, Number 35:
Narrated Nafi: Some of the sons of 'Abdullah told him (i.e. 'Abdullah) if he had stayed (and not performed Hajj that year).

Volume 3, Book 28, Number 36:
Narrated Ibn 'Abbas (radiallaahu `anhu):
Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) was prevented from performing ('Umra) Therefore, he shaved his head and had sexual relations with his wives and slaughtered his Hadi and performed Umra in the following year.

Volume 3, Book 28, Number 37:
Narrated Salim:
(Abdullah) bin 'Umar (radiallaahu `anhu) used to say, "Is not (the following of) the tradition of Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) sufficient for you? If anyone of you is prevented from performing Hajj, he should perform the Tawaf of the Ka'ba and between As-Safa and Al-Marwa and then finish the Ihram and everything will become legal for him which was illegal for him (during the state of Ihram) and he can perform Hajj in a following year and he should slaughter a Hadi or fast in case he cannot afford the Hadi."

Volume 3, Book 28, Number 38:
Narrated Al-Miswar (radiallaahu `anhu):
Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) slaughtered (the Hadi) before he had his head shaved and then he ordered his Companions to do the same.

Volume 3, Book 28, Number 39:
Narrated Nafi:
That Abdullah and Salim said to 'Abdullah bin 'Umar (radiallaahu `anhu), "(You should not go for Hajj this year)." 'Abdullah bin 'Umar (radiallaahu `anhu) replied, "We set out with the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) (to Mecca for performing 'Umra) and the infidels of Quraish prevented us from reaching the Ka'ba. Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) slaughtered his Budn (camels for sacrifice) and got his head shaved."

Volume 3, Book 28, Number 40:
Narrated Nafi:
When Abdullah bin 'Umar (radiallaahu `anhu) set out for Mecca with the intentions performing 'Umra in the period of afflictions, he said, "If I should be prevented from reaching the Ka'ba, then I would do the same as we did while in the company of Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam)." So, he assumed the Ihram for 'Umra since the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) had assumed the Ihram for 'Umra in the year of Al-Hudaibiya. Then 'Abdullah bin 'Umar (radiallaahu `anhu) thought about it and said, "The conditions for both Hajj and 'Umra are similar." He then turned towards his companions and said, "The conditions of both Hajj and 'Umra are similar and I make you witnesses that I have made the performance of Hajj obligatory for myself along with 'Umra." He then performed one Tawaf (between As-Safa and Al-Marwa) for both of them (i.e. Hajj and ('Umra) and considered that to be sufficient for him and offered a Hadi.
This has been discussed before. Anyone who makes the intention of Hajj, enters Ihraam and then is prevented from reaching the Ka`bah to perform the rituals of Hajj/`Umrah, may exit Ihraam by cutting/shaving his hair and slaughtering the hadiy (if he has any).
Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) was asked about a man who did Hajj without a permit, and he was prevented from entering Makkah. What does he have to do?
He replied:
If he said when entering ihraam, “If I am prevented (from completing Hajj), then I will exit ihraam at the point at which I am prevented”, then he may exit ihraam and he does not have to do anything else. But if he did not stipulate that, then he has to slaughter a hadiy because Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “But if you are prevented (from completing them), sacrifice a Hady (animal, i.e. a sheep, a cow, or a camel) such as you can afford” [al-Baqarah 2:196], and he should exit ihraam (i.e., shave his head or cut his hair) at the point where he is prevented from continuing. End quote.
Majmoo’ Fataawa Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (23/433).
Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) was asked about a woman who entered ihraam then cancelled her ‘umrah, then she did another ‘umrah a few days after that. Is this action correct? What is the ruling on the things she did that are forbidden in ihraam?
He replied:
This action is not correct, because once a person starts to do Hajj or ‘Umrah, it is haraam for him to cancel it unless that is for a valid shar’i reason. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “And perform properly (i.e. all the ceremonies according to the ways of Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم), the Hajj and ‘Umrah (i.e. the pilgrimage to Makkah) for Allaah. But if you are prevented (from completing them), sacrifice a Hady (animal, i.e. a sheep, a cow, or a camel) such as you can afford” [al-Baqarah 2:196]. This woman has to repent to Allaah for what she has done, but her ‘umrah is valid, because even though she cancelled her ‘umrah, ‘umrah cannot be cancelled, and this is something that applies only to Hajj and ‘Umrah. If the person who is doing ‘umrah decides during the ‘umrah to cancel it, it is not cancelled, or if he decides to cancel Hajj whilst he is getting dressed for Hajj, it is not cancelled. Hence the scholars said that the rituals (of Hajj and ‘umrah) cannot be cancelled.
Based on this, we say: This woman is still in a state of ihraam, from the time when she formed the intention until she completes ‘umrah, and her intention to cancel it has no effect, rather she is still in ihraam.
To sum up: With regard to this woman we say: Her ‘umrah is valid, but she should not try to cancel ihraam again, because if she cancels ihraam, she cannot free herself from it. With regard to what she has done of forbidden things, let us assume that her husband had intercourse with her, and intercourse during ihraam is one of the most serious of forbidden things, but she does not have to do anything, because she was ignorant (of the ruling), and everyone who does one of the things that are forbidden in ihraam out of ignorance or by mistake or because they are forced to do so does not have to do anything (i.e. offer expiation). End quote from Majmoo’ Fataawa Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (21/351).

`Umrah - Ihraam (Ahadith 1543 - 1545)

Bismillah.
Volume 3, Book 27, Number 20:
Narrated 'Amr bin Dinar:
We asked Ibn 'Umar (radiallaahu `anhu) whether a man who had performed the Tawaf of the Ka'ba but had not performed the Tawaf between As-Safa and Al-Marwa yet, was permitted to have sexual relation with his wife. He replied, "The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) arrived (at Mecca) and circumambulated the Ka'ba seven times and then offered a two Rak'at prayer behind Maqam-lbrahim and then performed the going (Tawaf) between As-Safa and Al-Marwa (seven times) (and verily, in Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) you have a good example." And we asked Jabir bin 'Abdullah (radiallaahu `anhu) (the same question) and he replied, "He should not go near her till he has finished the going (Tawaf) between As-Safa and Al-Marwa."

Volume 3, Book 27, Number 21:
Narrated Abu Musa Al-Ashari (radiallaahu `anhu):
I came to the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) at Al-Batha' while his camel was kneeling down and he asked me, "Have you intended to perform the Hajj?" I replied in the affirmative. He asked me, 'With what intention have you assumed Ihram?" I replied, "I have assumed Ihram with the same intention as that of the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam). He said, "You have done well. Perform the Tawaf of the Ka'ba and (the Sai) between As-safa and Al-Marwa and then finish the Ihram." So, I performed the Tawaf around the Ka'ba and the Sai) between As-Safa and Al-Marwa and then went to a woman of the tribe of Qais who cleaned my head from lice. Later I assumed the Ihram for Hajj. I used to give the verdict of doing the same till the caliphate of 'Umar (radiallaahu `anhu) who said, "If you follow the Holy Book then it orders you to remain in the state of Ihram till you finish from Hajj, if you follow the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) then he did not finish his Ihram till the Hadi (sacrifice) had reached its place of slaughtering (Hajj-al-Qiran)."

Volume 3, Book 27, Number 22:
Narrated Al-Aswad:
Abdullah the slave of Asma bint Abu Bakr (radiallaahu `anhaa), told me that he used to hear Asma' (radiallaahu `anhaa), whenever she passed by Al-Hajun, saying, "May Allah bless His Apostle Muhammad (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam). Once we dismounted here with him, and at that time we were traveling with light luggage; we had a few riding animals and a little food ration. I, my sister, 'Aisha (radiallaahu `anhaa), Az-Zubair (radiallaahu `anhu) and such and such persons performed 'Umra, and when we had passed our hands over the Ka'ba (i.e. performed Tawaf round the Ka'ba and between As-Safa and Al-Marwa) we finished our lhram. Later on we assumed Ihram for Hajj the same evening."
As discussed before, Ihraam for `Umrah is the same as Ihraam for Hajj. A person may open his Ihraam [of `Umrah] once he's done with Tawaaf, Sa`ee and cutting/shaving hair.
More on Ihraam:
Ihraam means having the intention of starting the rituals of Hajj or ‘Umrah.
When the pilgrim wants to enter ihraam, he should change his clothes and do ghusl like the ghusl done to cleanse oneself of janaabah (impurity following sexual activity). Then he should apply whatever perfume is available, musk or whatever, to his head and beard. It does not matter if traces of that perfume remain after he enters ihraam, because of the hadeeth narrated in al-Saheehayn from ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) who said: When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) wanted to enter ihraam, he would perfume himself with the best perfume he could find, then I would see shining traces of that musk on his head and beard after that.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 271; Muslim, 1190.
Doing ghusl when entering ihraam is Sunnah for both men and women, even women who are bleeding following childbirth or menstruating, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) commanded Asma’ bint ‘Umays when she was bleeding following childbirth to do ghusl when she entered ihraam, and to bandage her private parts and enter ihraam. Narrated by Muslim, 1209. Then after doing ghusl and putting on perfume, the pilgrim should put on the ihraam garments and – apart from women who are bleeding following childbirth or menstruating – pray the obligatory prayer if that is at the time of an obligatory prayer, otherwise they should  pray two rak’ahs with the intention of the Sunnah prayer of wudoo’. When the pilgrim has finished praying he should face the qiblah and enter ihraam. He may delay ihraam until he has boarded his means of transportation, and is ready to move off, but he should enter ihraam before he leaves the meeqaat for Makkah.

Hajj - Two Stages of Exiting Ihraam (Hadith No. 1509)

Bismillah.
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 809:
Narrated 'Abdur-Rahman bin Al-Qasim:
I heard my father who was the best man of his age, saying, "I heard 'Aisha (radiallaahu `anhaa) saying, 'I perfumed Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) with my own hands before finishing his Ihram while yet he has not performed Tawaf-al-Ifada.' She spread her hands (while saying so.)"
It is not permissible for the pilgrim in ihraam, man or woman, to put on perfume after entering ihraam, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “And do not wear any garment that has been touched by saffron or safflower.” And ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) said: I put perfume on the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) for his ihraam before he entered ihraam, and when he exited ihraam before he circumambulated the Ka’bah. Agreed upon. And the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said concerning a man who died when in ihraam: “Do not put any perfume on him.” Saheeh – agreed upon.
Firstly: the actions of the Day of Sacrifice are three for the pilgrim who is doing Ifraad. They are: stoning Jamrat al-‘Aqabah, shaving the head or cutting the hair, and tawaaf al-ifaadah, plus saa’i if he  did not do it after the tawaaf of arrival. For those who are doing Tamattu’ or Qiraan, they must also slaughter the sacrifice. The one who is doing tamattu’ must also do saa’i after tawaaf al-ifaadah.
Secondly: these actions should be done in the following order: stoning the Jamrah, then offering the sacrifice, then shaving the head or cutting the hair, then tawaaf and saa’i. This is best, following the example of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), because he stoned the Jamrah, then offered the sacrifice, then shaved his head, then ‘Aa’ishah put perfume on him, then he went to the Ka’bah (to do tawaaf al-ifaadah). He was asked about the order in which these actions were to be done, by those who had done some of them ahead of others, and he said: “It doesn’t matter, it doesn’t matter.”
Thirdly: Whoever does two of them apart from offering the sacrifice has thus completed the first stage of exiting ihraam, hence it becomes permissible for him to do all the things that were forbidden to him whilst in ihraam, apart  from intercourse. When he has done all three, then everything that was forbidden to him become permissible, including intercourse. There are many ahaadeeth concerning this which point to this meaning.

Bismillah.
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 611:
Narrated Said bin Jubair:
Ibn 'Umar (radiallaahu `anhu) used to oil his hair. I told that to Ibrahim who said, "What do you think about this statement: Narrated Aswad from 'Aisha (radiallaahu `anhaa): As if I were now observing the glitter of the scent in the parting of the hair of the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) while he was Muhrim?"
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 612:
Narrated 'Aisha (radiallaahu `anhaa):
(the wife of the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam)) I used to scent Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) when he wanted to assume Ihram and also on finishing Ihram before the Tawaf round the Ka'ba (Tawaf-al-ifada).
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 613:

Volume 2, Book 26, Number 615:
Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Umar (radiallaahu `anhu):
A man asked, "O Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam)! What kind of clothes should a Muhrim wear?" Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) replied, "He should not wear a shirt, a turban, trousers, a headcloak or leather socks except if he can find no slippers, he then may wear leather socks after cutting off what might cover the ankles. And he should not wear clothes which are scented with saffron or Wars (kinds of Perfumes) . "
