Intimacy during Fasting (Ahadith 1644 - 1648)

Bismillah.
Volume 3, Book 31, Number 149:
Narrated 'Aisha (radiallaahu `anhaa):
The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) used to kiss and embrace (his wives) while he was fasting, and he had more power to control his desires than any of you. Said Jabir, "The person who gets discharge after casting a look (on his wife) should complete his fast."

Volume 3, Book 31, Number 150:
Narrated Hisham's father:
Aisha (radiallaahu `anhaa) said, "Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) used to kiss some of his wives while he was fasting," and then she smiled.

Volume 3, Book 31, Number 151:
Narrated Zainab (daughter of Um Salama) (radiallaahu `anhaa) that her mother said, "While I was (lying) with Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) underneath a woolen sheet, I got the menstruation, and then slipped away and put on the clothes (which I used to wear) in menses. He asked, "What is the matter? Did you get your menses?" I replied in the affirmative and then entered underneath that woolen sheet. I and Allah's Apostle used to take a bath from one water pot and he used to kiss me while he was fasting."

Volume 3, Book 31, Number 152:
Narrated 'Aisha (radiallaahu `anhaa):
(At times) in Ramadan the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) used to take a bath in the morning not because of a wet dream and would continue his fast.

Volume 3, Book 31, Number 153:
Narrated Abu Bakr bin 'Abdur-Rahman:
My father and I went to 'Aisha (radiallaahu `anhaa) and she said, "I testify that Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) at times used to get up in the morning in a state of Janaba from sexual intercourse, not from a wet dream and then he would fast that day." Then he went to Um Salama (radiallaahu `anhaa) and she also narrated a similar thing.
The Muslim has to protect his fast from things that may invalidate it, and he has to seek reward by giving up his desires for food, drink and intercourse, as Allaah says in the hadeeth qudsi concerning the virtues of fasting: “He gives up his food, his drink and his physical desires for My sake.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, al-Sawm, 1761). But if he can control himself and not slip into that which would cause his fast to be invalidated, by the emission of maniy (semen) or by having intercourse, or would make his fast imperfect by the emission of madhiy (prostatic fluid), then it is permissible for him to embrace his wife in this case, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to fondle ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) but he used to control his desire. 
Shaykh ‘Abd al-‘Azeez ibn Baaz said: 
A man may kiss, embrace and touch his wife, without having intercourse, when he is fasting. This is permissible and there is nothing wrong with it, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to kiss and touch his wives when he was fasting. But if there is the fear that he may do something that Allaah has forbidden because his desire is aroused quickly, then it is makrooh for him to do that. If he ejaculates he still should not eat or drink for the rest of the day, and he has to make up the fast, but he does not have to offer kafaarah (expiation) according to the majority of the scholars. But madhiy (prostatic fluid) does not invalidate the fast, according to the more correct of the two scholarly views, because the basic principle is that the fast remains valid, and because it is too difficult to avoid. And Allaah is the Source of strength.

Ghusl before Fasting (Hadith No. 1643)

Bismillah.
Volume 3, Book 31, Number 148:
Narrated 'Aisha and Um Salama (radiallaahu `anhumaa):
At times Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) used to get up in the morning in the state of Janaba after having sexual relations with his wives. He would then take a bath and fast.
The fast of one who has intercourse with his wife at night and wakes up in the morning in a state of junub is still valid, as is the fast of one who becomes junub in his sleep, whether at night or during the day. There is nothing wrong with delaying ghusl until just before dawn. Rather fasting is invalidated by having intercourse during the day in Ramadaan, from just before dawn until after sunset.

Usually what happens is, being in the state of janaabah, people tend to delay ghusl (due to embarrassment or other reasons) and miss Fajr. This is not acceptable. One must make sure to pray on time as well.

The Black and White Threads (Ahadith 1634 - 1636)

Bismillah.

أُحِلَّ لَكُمْ لَيْلَةَ الصِّيَامِ الرَّفَثُ إِلَىٰ نِسَائِكُمْ ۚ هُنَّ لِبَاسٌ لَّكُمْ وَأَنتُمْ لِبَاسٌ لَّهُنَّ ۗ عَلِمَ اللَّهُ أَنَّكُمْ كُنتُمْ تَخْتَانُونَ أَنفُسَكُمْ فَتَابَ عَلَيْكُمْ وَعَفَا عَنكُمْ ۖ فَالْآنَ بَاشِرُوهُنَّ وَابْتَغُوا مَا كَتَبَ اللَّهُ لَكُمْ ۚ وَكُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا حَتَّىٰ يَتَبَيَّنَ لَكُمُ الْخَيْطُ الْأَبْيَضُ مِنَ الْخَيْطِ الْأَسْوَدِ مِنَ الْفَجْرِ ۖ ثُمَّ أَتِمُّوا الصِّيَامَ إِلَى اللَّيْلِ ۚ وَلَا تُبَاشِرُوهُنَّ وَأَنتُمْ عَاكِفُونَ فِي الْمَسَاجِدِ ۗ تِلْكَ حُدُودُ اللَّهِ فَلَا تَقْرَبُوهَا ۗ كَذَٰلِكَ يُبَيِّنُ اللَّهُ آيَاتِهِ لِلنَّاسِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَّقُونَ

"It has been made permissible for you the night preceding fasting to go to your wives [for sexual relations]. They are clothing for you and you are clothing for them. Allah knows that you used to deceive yourselves, so He accepted your repentance and forgave you. So now, have relations with them and seek that which Allah has decreed for you. And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread [of night]. Then complete the fast until the sunset. And do not have relations with them as long as you are staying for worship in the mosques. These are the limits [set by] Allah , so do not approach them. Thus does Allah make clear His ordinances to the people that they may become righteous." [2: 187]

Ibn Kathir says in his tafsir:
These Ayat contain a relief from Allah for the Muslims by ending the practice that was observed in the early years of Islam. At that time, Muslims were allowed to eat, drink and have sexual intercourse only until the `Isha' (Night) prayer, unless one sleeps before the `Isha' prayer. Those who slept before `Isha' or offered the `Isha' prayer, were not allowed to drink, eat or sexual intercourse sex until the next night. The Muslims found that to be difficult for them.
Volume 3, Book 31, Number 139:
Narrated Al-Bara:
It was the custom among the companions of Muhammad (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) that if any of them was fasting and the food was presented (for breaking his fast), but he slept before eating, he would not eat that night and the following day till sunset.
Qais bin Sirma-al-Ansari (radiallaahu `anhu) was fasting and came to his wife at the time of Iftar (breaking one's fast) and asked her whether she had anything to eat. She replied, "No, but I would go and bring some for you." He used to do hard work during the day, so he was overwhelmed by sleep and slept. When his wife came and saw him, she said, "Disappointment for you." When it was midday on the following day, he fainted and the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) was informed about the whole matter and the following verses were revealed: "You are permitted To go to your wives (for sexual relation) At the night of fasting." So, they were overjoyed by it. And then Allah also revealed: "And eat and drink Until the white thread Of dawn appears to you Distinct from the black thread (of the night)." (2.187)

Volume 3, Book 31, Number 140:
Narrated 'Adi bin Hatim (radiallaahu `anhu):
When the above verses were revealed: 'Until the white thread appears to you, distinct from the black thread,' I took two (hair) strings, one black and the other white, and kept them under my pillow and went on looking at them throughout the night but could not make anything out of it. So, the next morning I went to Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) and told him the whole story. He explained to me, "That verse means the darkness of the night and the whiteness of the dawn."

Volume 3, Book 31, Number 141:
Narrated Sahl bin Saud (radiallaahu `anhu):
When the following verses were revealed: 'Eat and drink until the white thread appears to you, distinct from the black thread' and of dawn was not revealed, some people who intended to fast, tied black and white threads to their legs and went on eating till they differentiated between the two. Allah then revealed the words, 'of dawn', and it became clear that meant night and day.
I've always found this incident regarding `Adi bin Hatim (radiallaahu `anhu) very cute! It goes to say how some of us are quite literal in understanding things. Not that we're to be blamed. :P
On the other hand, there's an important lesson in it for us: the companions weren't always correct in their interpretation of Quranic ayaat or Ahadith. We'll always find differences of opinions among companions, and when we do, we should go for the most correct and favored opinion. And just because a companion reached an incorrect conclusion doesn't mean he was less intelligent or had weak imaan, na`oodhu billah! It only proves that they were human beings like us, but far better than us. If we were there, we would've made fun of `Adi (radiallaahu `anhu). But we don't find any reports of companions or the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) laughing at him or making him feel bad about what he did. Such were the chosen people. <3

Hajj - Two Stages of Exiting Ihraam (Hadith No. 1509)


Bismillah.
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 809:
Narrated 'Abdur-Rahman bin Al-Qasim:
I heard my father who was the best man of his age, saying, "I heard 'Aisha (radiallaahu `anhaa) saying, 'I perfumed Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) with my own hands before finishing his Ihram while yet he has not performed Tawaf-al-Ifada.' She spread her hands (while saying so.)"
It is not permissible for the pilgrim in ihraam, man or woman, to put on perfume after entering ihraam, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “And do not wear any garment that has been touched by saffron or safflower.” And ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) said: I put perfume on the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) for his ihraam before he entered ihraam, and when he exited ihraam before he circumambulated the Ka’bah. Agreed upon. And the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said concerning a man who died when in ihraam: “Do not put any perfume on him.” Saheeh – agreed upon. 
Firstly: the actions of the Day of Sacrifice are three for the pilgrim who is doing Ifraad. They are: stoning Jamrat al-‘Aqabah, shaving the head or cutting the hair, and tawaaf al-ifaadah, plus saa’i if he  did not do it after the tawaaf of arrival. For those who are doing Tamattu’ or Qiraan, they must also slaughter the sacrifice. The one who is doing tamattu’ must also do saa’i after tawaaf al-ifaadah. 
Secondly: these actions should be done in the following order: stoning the Jamrah, then offering the sacrifice, then shaving the head or cutting the hair, then tawaaf and saa’i. This is best, following the example of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), because he stoned the Jamrah, then offered the sacrifice, then shaved his head, then ‘Aa’ishah put perfume on him, then he went to the Ka’bah (to do tawaaf al-ifaadah). He was asked about the order in which these actions were to be done, by those who had done some of them ahead of others, and he said: “It doesn’t matter, it doesn’t matter.” 
Thirdly: Whoever does two of them apart from offering the sacrifice has thus completed the first stage of exiting ihraam, hence it becomes permissible for him to do all the things that were forbidden to him whilst in ihraam, apart  from intercourse. When he has done all three, then everything that was forbidden to him become permissible, including intercourse. There are many ahaadeeth concerning this which point to this meaning.
