Who Dares Plot Against the People of Madinah? (Hadith No. 1596)

Bismillah.
Volume 3, Book 30, Number 101:
Narrated Sad (radiallaahu `anhu):
I heard the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) saying, "None plots against the people of Medina but that he will be dissolved (destroyed) like the salt is dissolved in water."
Mwahahahaha! Yes, that's an evil laugh, in response to the one who practices evil by plotting against Madinah and its people. You're going down, bro! Repent now, because if you continue to do it, you shall definitely be destroyed. They won't even find your traces afterwards. e_e

Day of Judgement - Disgrace, Sweat and Intercession (Hadith No. 1212)

Bismillah.
Volume 2, Book 24, Number 553:
Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Umar (radiallaahu `anhu):
The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, "A man keeps on asking others for something till he comes on the Day of Resurrection without any piece of flesh on his face." The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) added, "On the Day of Resurrection, the Sun will come near (to, the people) to such an extent that the sweat will reach up to the middle of the ears, so, when all the people are in that state, they will ask Adam (`alayhissalaam) for help, and then Moses (`alayhissalaam), and then Muhammad (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam)." The sub-narrator added "Muhammad (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) will intercede with Allah to judge amongst the people. He will proceed on till he will hold the ring of the door (of Paradise) and then Allah will exalt him to Maqam Mahmud (the privilege of intercession, etc.). And all the people of the gathering will send their praises to Allah.
This man used to ask of people a lot, even when he was not in need. It's something undignified. One's self-respect should keep him from stooping to such a level. So when this person will be brought on the Day of Judgement, his face will be without flesh. It's to show disgrace and disrespect. If he didn't practice self-respect in his life in this world, he shall not have it on that day either. Like sin, like punishment.
Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) warns about the Day of Judgement, when the Sun will be so near that people will sweat like crazy. Imagine someone (literally) drowning in his sweat, his sweat reaching up to the middle of his ears. One drop of sweat trickles down my forehead in this world's summer where the Sun is situated thousands of miles away, and it makes me feel so agitated. I wonder how it would feel to be sweating so profusely that day. May Allah save us from it and give us a place under His Shade on the Day of Judgement.
Read about intercession in the Hereafter here, and the High Status (Maqaam Mahmood) of the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallamhere.
P.S. did anyone notice today's date and the Hadith number? Coincidence? I think so! :P

Punishment for not Paying Zakah (Ahadith 1184 - 1185)

Bismillah.
Narrated Abu Huraira:
The Prophet said, "(On the Day of Resurrection) camels will come to their owner in the best state of health they have ever had (in the world), and if he had not paid their Zakat (in the world) then they would tread him with their feet; and similarly, sheep will come to their owner in the best state of health they have ever had in the world, and if he had not paid their Zakat, then they would tread him with their hooves and would butt him with their horns." The Prophet added, "One of their rights is that they should be milked while water is kept in front of them." The Prophet added, "I do not want anyone of you to come to me on the Day of Resurrection, carrying over his neck a sheep that will be bleating. Such a person will (then) say, 'O Muhammad! (please intercede for me,) I will say to him. 'I can't help you, for I conveyed Allah's Message to you.' Similarly, I do not want anyone of you to come to me carrying over his neck a camel that will be grunting. Such a person (then) will say "O Muhammad! (please intercede for me)." I will say to him, "I can't help you for I conveyed Allah's message to you."
Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah's Apostle said, "Whoever is made wealthy by Allah and does not pay the Zakat of his wealth, then on the Day of Resurrection his wealth will be made like a bald-headed poisonous male snake with two black spots over the eyes. The snake will encircle his neck and bite his cheeks and say, 'I am your wealth, I am your treasure.' " Then the Prophet recited the holy verses:-- 'Let not those who withhold . . .' (to the end of the verse). (3.180).
In the tafsir of the mentioned ayah (3: 180), Ibn Kathir says:
Allah said,

( And let not those who are stingy with that which Allah has bestowed on them of His bounty (wealth) think that it is good for them. Nay, it will be worse for them.) ﴿3:180﴾
Therefore, the Ayah says that the miser should not think that collecting money will benefit him. Rather, it will harm him in his religion and worldly affairs. Allah mentions the money that the miser collected on the Day of Resurrection,

(the things that they stingy with shall be tied to their necks like a collar on the Day of Resurrection.)
Al-Bukhari recorded that Abu Hurayrah said that the Messenger of Allah said,

(Whoever Allah makes wealthy and he does not pay the Zakah due on his wealth, then (on the Day of Resurrection) his wealth will be made in the likeness of a bald-headed poisonous male snake with two black spots over the eyes. The snake will encircle his neck and bite his cheeks and proclaim, `I am your wealth, I am your treasure.')
The Prophet then recited the Ayah,

( And let not those who are stingy with that which Allah has bestowed on them of His bounty think that it is good for them. Nay, it will be worse for them), until the end. Al-Bukhari, but not Muslim, collected this Hadith using this chain of narration, Ibn Hibban also collected it in his Sahih.
Imam Ahmad recorded that `Abdullah said that the Prophet said,

«مَا مِنْ عَبْدٍلَا يُؤَدِّي زَكَاةَ مَالِهِ إِلَّا جُعِلَ لَهُ شُجَاعٌ أَقْرَعُ يَتْبَعُهُ، يَفِرُّ مِنْهُ وَهُوَ يَتْبَعُهُ، فَيَقُولُ: أَنَا كَنْزُك»

(Every person who does not pay the Zakah due on his wealth, will have his money made into the shape of a bald-headed, poisonous male snake who will follow him. The person will run away from the snake, who will follow him and proclaim, `I am your treasure.')
`Abdullah then recited the Ayah in Allah's Book that testifies to this fact,

(the things that they were stingy with shall be tied to their necks like a collar on the Day of Resurrection.)
This was recorded by At-Tirmidhi, An-Nasa'i, and Ibn Majah, and At-Tirmidhi said, "Hasan Sahih.''
Allah's statement,

(And to Allah belongs the inheritance of the heavens and the Earth), means,

(and spend of that whereof He has made you trustees) ﴿57: 7﴾. Therefore, since all affairs are under Allah's control, then spend from your money so it will benefit you on the Day of Return,

(and Allah is Well-Acquainted with all that you do.) with your intentions and what your hearts conceal.
It's pretty clear that not paying zakah is no joke. Severe punishments are prescribed for the one who does not pay zakah, in the grave as well as on the Day of Judgement [some will graze on al-daree’ and al-zaqqoom (horrid types of food in Hell) because they withheld the zakaah of their wealth]. Then what is to be said about him in this world?
Zakaah is one of the pillars of Islam. If a person does not do it because he does not believe that it is obligatory, the ruling should be explained to him and if he persists, then he is a kaafir, and the funeral prayer cannot be offered for him and he cannot be buried in the Muslim graveyard. But if he does not pay zakaah because he is stingy, but he believes that it is obligatory, then he is a sinner who is guilty of a major sin and he is a wrong doer, but he is not a kaafir. Therefore he should be washed (ghusl) and the funeral prayer should be offered for him if he dies in this state, and his case will be decided on the Day of Resurrection.

Palm Leaf-Stalks or Flowers on Graves? (Hadith No. 1142)

Bismillah.
Volume 2, Book 23, Number 443:
Narrated Ibn Abbas:
The Prophet once passed by two graves, and those two persons (in the graves) were being tortured. He said, "They are being tortured not for a great thing (to avoid). One of them never saved himself from being soiled with his urine, while the other was going about with calumnies (to make enmity between friends). He then took a green leaf of a date-palm tree split it into two pieces and fixed one on each grave. The people said, "O Allah's Apostle! Why have you done so?" He replied, "I hope that their punishment may be lessened till they (the leaf) become dry."
These two persons were getting punishment of the grave not because they committed some huge crimes, but just because one wasn't very careful regarding his cleanliness and purity, and the other kept himself busy making enmity between friends.
Why are we so sure that our grave will be a spacious one? That the Earth will welcome us warmly? That the insects and worms won't harm us? That the amount of time we spend lying in our graves (however long that may be) will be a 'good' time? What makes us so sure?
Coming to the part where Prophet (SAW) put leaves of the palm tree over the graves, hoping that their punishment will be reduced. Know, that we're not supposed to do it. One, we don't know who's getting punished in their graves and who isn't. Two, companions didn't do it, so we won't either.
Not sure what good these flowers will do to the person inside, but they definitely could've been put to a better use. Like a vase? Or just a gift for someone? :P
Shaykh Ibn Baaz said:
That is not prescribed in Islam, rather it is bid’ah (an innovation), because the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) only placed the palm-leaf stalk on the two graves of the people whose torment he was made aware of; he did not place them on any other graves. From that we know that it is not permissible to put them on graves, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever introduces anything into this matter of ours (Islam) that is not part of it, will have it rejected.” According to a version narrated by Muslim: “Whoever does anything that is not part of this matter of ours (Islam), will have it rejected.”
Similarly, it is not permissible to write on graves or to place flowers on them, because of the two hadeeth quoted above, and because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) forbade plastering over graves, erecting structures over them, sitting on them and writing on them.

Jews go to Muslims for Justice (Hadith No. 1112)

Bismillah.
Volume 2, Book 23, Number 413:
Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Umar :
The Jew brought to the Prophet a man and a woman from amongst them who have committed (adultery) illegal sexual intercourse. He ordered both of them to be stoned (to death), near the place of offering the funeral prayers beside the mosque."
There are various aspects to this Hadith. The one I like the most is: how awesome a leader Muhammad (SAW) was, and how just the Islamic court was, that the Jews used to come to the Muslims to solve their issues. They had the freedom to go to their own courts, and get judged by their own Sharee`ah, but they preferred coming to the Prophet (SAW) because they knew they will be treated with justice, no matter what.
Prophet (SAW) was truly awesome, don't you think? <3

Punishment of the Grave (Hadith No. 858)

Assalamu`alaykum,
Bismillah.

Volume 2, Book 18, Number 858:
Narrated 'Amra bint 'AbdurRahman:
A Jewess came to ask 'Aisha (the wife of the Prophet) about something. She said to her, "May Allah give you refuge from the punishment of the grave." So 'Aisha ' asked Allah's Apostle "Would the people be punished in their graves?" Allah's Apostle after seeking refuge with Allah from the punishment of the grave (and thus replied in the affirmative). Then one day, Allah's Apostle rode to go to some place but the sun eclipsed. He returned in the forenoon and passed through the rear of the dwellings (of his wives) and stood for the (eclipse) prayer, and the people stood behind him. He stood up for a long period and then performed a prolonged bowing which was shorter than the first bowing. Then he raised his head and prostrated. Then he stood up (for the second Raka) for a long while but the standing was shorter than that of the first Raka. Then he performed a prolonged bowing which was shorter than the first one. Then he raised his head and prostrated. Then he stood up for a long time but shorter than the first. Then he performed a prolonged bowing but shorter than the first. Then he raised his head and prostrated and finished the prayer and (then delivered the sermon and) said as much as Allah wished. And then he ordered the people to seek refuge with Allah from the punishment of the grave.

The punishment of the grave (` adhab al-qabr) for the unbelievers and for some of the disobedient believers is established and proven by the Qur'an, narrations that reach the level of certainty ( tawatur) and the consensus of the Ummah ( ijma`), and it is a agreed upon concept among the Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama`ah. Only some members of the deviated sect Mu`tazila and the Khawarij denied the punishment of the grave.
Imaam ibn Al-Qayyim, may Allaah have mercy upon him, dedicated a full chapter in his famous book ‘Ar-Rooh’ (The soul) for this issue, and he began it by stating: "One might ask: what are the reasons behind some people being punished in the grave? There are two answers, a detailed one and a summarized one:
The summarized answer is they get punished because of their ignorance concerning Allaah, their disobedience to Him and their committing what He prohibited; Allaah will not punish a soul which knew Him, loved Him, adhered to what He commanded and refrained from what He prohibited, nor will He punish the body in which such a soul was. The punishment in the grave and in
the Hereafter is an indication of the wrath of Allaah upon His slave; The one who makes Allaah angry in this life and did not repent, and dies while in that state will be punished in the grave according to the extent he angered Allaah; some will be punished for a short while, and others for a long time.
Narrated Anas: The Prophet said, "When a human being is laid in his grave and his companions return and he even hears their footsteps, two angels come to him and make him sit and ask him: What did you use to say about this man, Muhammad ? He will say: I testify that he is Allah's servant and His Apostle. Then it will be said to him, 'Look at your place in the Hell-Fire. Allah has given you a place in Paradise instead of it. “The Prophet added, "The dead person will see both his places. But a non-believer or a hypocrite will say to the angels, 'I do not know, but I used to say what the people used to say! It will be said to him, 'Neither did you know nor did you take the guidance (by reciting the Quran).' Then he will be hit with an iron hammer between his two ears, and he will cry and that cry will be heard by whatever approaches him except human beings and jinns." [Bukhari]

From Abu Hurayrah who said: The Prophet said, “When one of you finishes the last tashahhud (testimony of faith in prayer), he should seek refuge in Allah from four things: From the Punishment of Hell, from the Punishment of the Grave, from the trials of life and death, and from the evil trials of the Maseehud-Dajjaal (Anti-Christ).”
‘O Allaah, I take refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, from the torment of the Fire, from the trials and tribulations of life and death and from the evil affliction of the Al-Maseeh Ad-Dajjaal.’

Invocation of Prophet (SAW) against the Disbelievers (Ahadith 818 - 819)

Assalamu`alaykum,
Bismillah.

Volume 2, Book 17, Number 818:
Narrated Abu Huraira;
Whenever the Prophet (p.b.u.h) lifted his head from the bowing in the last Raka he used to say: "O Allah! Save 'Aiyash bin Abi Rabi'a. O Allah! Save Salama bin Hisham. O Allah! Save Walid bin Walid. O Allah! Save the weak faithful believers. O Allah! Be hard on the tribes of Mudar and send (famine) years on them like the famine years of (Prophet) Joseph ." The Prophet further said, "Allah forgive the tribes of Ghifar and save the tribes of Aslam." Abu Az-Zinad (a sub-narrator) said, "The Qunut used to be recited by the Prophet in the Fajr prayer."

Volume 2, Book 17, Number 819:
Narrated Masruq:
We were with 'Abdullah and he said, "When the Prophet saw the refusal of the people to accept Islam he said, "O Allah! Send (famine) years on them for (seven years) like the seven years (of famine during the time) of (Prophet) Joseph." So famine overtook them for one year and destroyed every kind of life to such an extent that the people started eating hides, carcasses and rotten dead animals. Whenever one of them looked towards the sky, he would (imagine himself to) see smoke because of hunger.
So Abu Sufyan went to the Prophet and said, "O Muhammad! You order people to obey Allah and to keep good relations with kith and kin. No doubt the people of your tribe are dying, so please pray to Allah for them."
So Allah revealed: "Then watch you For the day that The sky will bring forth a kind Of smoke Plainly visible ... Verily! You will return (to disbelief) On the day when We shall seize You with a mighty grasp." (44: 10-16)
Ibn Masud added, "Al-Batsha (i.e. grasp) happened in the battle of Badr and no doubt smoke, Al-BatshaAl-Lizam, and the verse of Surat Ar-Rum have all passed.

Dukhan (Smoke):

Then wait you for the Day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke,
Covering the people: this is a painful torment.
(They will say): "Our Lord! Remove the torment from us, really we shall become believers!"
How can there be for them an admonition (at the time when the torment has reached them), when a Messenger explaining things clearly has already come to them.
Then they had turned away from him (Messenger Muhammad صلى الله عليه و سلم) and said: (He is) one taught (by a human being), a madman!"
Verily, We shall remove the torment for a while. Verily you will revert (to disbelief).
[Ad-Dukhan: 10-15]

Batsha:

On the Day when We shall seize you with the greatest seizure (punishment). Verily, We will exact retribution. [Ad-Dukhan: 16]
Verily, (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) the Seizure (punishment) of your Lord is severe and painful. [Al-Burooj: 12]
Such is the Seizure of your Lord when He seizes the (population of) the towns while they are doing wrong. Verily, His Seizure is painful, (and) severe. [Hud: 102]

Lizam:

Say (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم to the disbelievers): "My Lord pays attention to you only because of your invocation to Him. But now you have indeed denied (Him). So the torment will be yours for ever (inseparable, permanent punishment)." [Al-Furqan: 77]
As already mentioned in the Hadith, this famine had occurred on the Holy Prophet's prayer, and he had prayed for it so that when the calamity befell, it would break the stubbornness of the disbelievers and then they would listen to the rebuke. It looked as if this expectation was being fulfilled to some extent, for some of the most stubborn enemies of the Truth, on account of the severities of the famine, had cried out: "O Lord, avert this torment from us and we will believe." At this, on the one hand, the Holy Prophet has been foretold :"These people will not learn any lesson from such calamities. When they have turned away from the Messenger, whose life, character, works and speech clearly show that he is Allah's true Messenger, how will a mere famine help remove their disbelief?" On the other, the unbelievers have been addressed, so as to say : "You lie when you say that you will believe as soon as the torment is removed from you. We shall just remove it to see how sincere you are in your promise. There is a graver disaster about to fall upon you. You need a much more crushing blow :minor misfortunes cannot set you right."
Some scholars comment that this 'smoke' is referring to the event that will take place on the Day of Resurrection, but Ibn Mas`ud's opinion (which seems the most correct one) was that Dukhan (Smoke) has already taken place. Meaning, it happened on the Battle of Badr. Allahu A`lam.

Site of the Battle of Badr

Anyway, whatever happened with the Quraysh and other nations of the past is history. Being judgmental is not the way to look at it. Allah (SWT) narrated these stories in the Qur'an for our benefit. He wants us to learn. He wants us to not repeat those mistakes. He wants us to be saved from His punishment. He wants to have Mercy on us. But do we, or will we ever learn!?
Wassalam.

What Good is there in Distraction? (Hadith No. 756)

Assalamu`alaykum,
Bismillah.

Volume 2, Book 13, Number 756:
Narrated Jabir bin 'Abdullah:
While we were praying (Jumua Khutba & prayer) with the Prophet (p.b.u.h), some camels loaded with food arrived (from Sham). The people diverted their attention towards the camels (and left the mosque), and only twelve persons remained with the Prophet. So this verse was revealed: "But when they see some bargain or some amusement, they disperse headlong to it, and leave you standing." (62.11)

But when they saw a transaction or a diversion, [O Muhammad], they rushed to it and left you standing. Say, "What is with Allah is better than diversion and than a transaction, and Allah is the best of providers." [Qur'an 62: 11]
To get some detail on this incident, read it in Tafsir Ibn Kathir.
Some important points:
  • Companions were humans. They did commit mistakes and errors in their lives, NOT due to weakness in Iman, but general lack of training. This does not lower their rank or status in our eyes whatsoever because of Allah's statement:
Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him. Such people are the party of Allah. Truly it is the party of Allah who are successful. (Surat al-Mujadala,  22)
  •  Whenever something went wrong, Prophet (SAW) corrected it, and/or Allah (SWT) sent down revelation regarding it. All such incidents have been recorded in the books of Ahadith and history. It's a blessing for us, because we can derive great benefit from them. We must learn from these incidents, teach others and make sure not to repeat those mistakes again.
  • We must never come to any conclusions before knowing the background or both sides of the coin, to be more precise.
  • When in a halaqah of Quran/Hadith/knowledge, NEVER be distracted. It is Shaytaan who wants to distracts you and does not want any good to come to you. No matter what comes up, the knowledge you're gaining in that halqah is far more better and way more important than any worldly thing. So FOCUS!
  • Generalize this rule: focus on what you're doing. What good is there in distraction after all?
  • Trust Allah when He says this:
"What is with Allah is better than diversion and than a transaction, and Allah is the best of providers."
  • Obey Allah. Follow the Sunnah. Be cool.

    Be cool! B)

Wassalam.

Head of a Donkey (Hadith No. 660)

Salam,
Bismillah.

Volume 1, Book 11, Number 660:
Narrated Abu Huraira:
The Prophet said, "Isn't he who raises his head before the Imam afraid that Allah may transform his head into that of a donkey or his figure (face) into that of a donkey?"

Isn't he afraid? There was a man we get to know about, who challenged this Hadith. He raised his head before the Imaam intentionally during prayer, and Allah turned his face into that of a donkey (or somewhat similar to it). Later on, he repented. [Can't find a historic reference for this incidence. Let me know if you can help with it. Jzk.]

Anyway, the lesson here is: 'follow' your Imaam. Wait for him to make his move, and then repeat after him. During Salah, wait for the Imaam to say his takbeer, change his position, and then change yours. 'Kay? :)

Wassalam.
