The Seven Do's (Hadith No. 1030)


Bismillah.
Volume 2, Book 23, Number 331:
Narrated Al-Bara' bin 'Azib:
Allah's Apostle ordered us to do seven things and forbade us to do other seven. He ordered us:
to follow the funeral procession. to visit the sick, to accept invitations, to help the oppressed, to fulfill the oaths, to return the greeting and to reply to the sneezer: (saying, "May Allah be merciful on you," provided the sneezer says, "All the praises are for Allah,"). He forbade us to use silver utensils and dishes and to wear golden rings, silk (clothes), Dibaj (pure silk cloth), Qissi and Istabraq (two kinds of silk cloths).

The Seven Do's:

  1. Follow the funeral procession - of your Muslim brethren. It reminds us of our death, helps us prepare for it.
  2. Visit the sick - it encourages compassion and rahmah among the society. Plus, you can ask the sick person to make du`a for you. Bonus! :D
  3. Accept invitations - be a party animal. Just kidding. Do as it says in the Hadith.
  4. Help the oppressed - you'll feel closer to Allah.
  5. Fulfill oaths - because that's what the hypocrites don't do.
  6. Return greeting - of the same level, or with better words.
  7. Reply to the one who sneezes - by saying yarhamuk Allah [may Allah be merciful on you].

The Seven Don'ts:

  1. Silver utensils.
  2. Silver dishes.
  3. Golden rings - for men.
  4. Silk - for men.
  5. Dibaaj (type of silk) - for men.
  6. Qissi (type of silk) - for men.
  7. Istabraq (type of silk) - for men.
By the way, all these forbidden things will be available in Paradise. That too, n times better in quality and quantity. Worth the wait, I tell you. :)

Sajdah on Seven Bones (Ahadith 773-774)

Bismillah.

Volume 1, Book 12, Number 773:
Narrated Ibn 'Abbas:
The Prophet was ordered (by Allah) to prostrate on seven parts and not to tuck up the clothes or hair (while praying). Those parts are: the forehead (along with the tip of nose), both hands, both knees, and (toes of) both feet.

Note, the seven bones do NOT include the elbow, so keep 'em off the floor!
Oh, and note: this Hadith doesn't say this way of prostration is for men only.
And don't forget, rubbing your nose on the ground is a very important part of sajdah. For it is the true manifestation of humility.


Volume 1, Book 12, Number 774:
Narrated Ibn 'Abbas:
The Prophet said, "We have been ordered to prostrate on seven bones and not to tuck up the clothes or hair."

I understand the seven bones part. But what does it mean to not tuck up one's clothes or hair?
While offering Salah, one should not engage in arranging his clothes or removing his hair from his forehead. He should devote himself to the Salah with submissiveness. - M. Muhsin Khan's footnote on this Hadith
Okay, I don't understand the 'removing hair from his forehead' part. Who does that?
Anyway, my understanding is: we're not supposed to play with our clothes/hair during Salah. It does not let khushoo` come to our prayer. So focus your mind AND body completely on Salah. Saddidoo! [Seedhay ho jao!]

The Lucky Seven (Hadith No. 629)

Volume 1, Book 11, Number 629:
Narrated Abu Huraira:
The Prophet said, "Allah will give shade to seven on the Day when there will be no shade but His. (These seven persons are) a just ruler, a youth who has been brought up in the worship of Allah (i.e. worships Allah sincerely from childhood), a man whose heart is attached to the mosques (i.e. to pray the compulsory prayers in the mosque in congregation), two persons who love each other only for Allah's sake and they meet and part in Allah's cause only, a man who refuses the call of a charming woman of noble birth for illicit intercourse with her and says: I am afraid of Allah, a man who gives charitable gifts so secretly that his left hand does not know what his right hand has given (i.e. nobody knows how much he has given in charity), and a person who remembers Allah in seclusion and his eyes are then flooded with tears."

 I can't help but say, I love this Hadith. Whenever I read it, I try to find the category that I fit in. You have to find one, wait, more than one categories for yourself as well! After all, we'll desperately need a shade on the day when there will be no shade but His. :(
A just ruler: it doesn't have to be a king or a president only. Everyone in their own circle is a ruler according to another Hadith of the Prophet (SAW). You're a ruler/leader if you're a mother/father/brother/sister/head of an organization/Imam of a masjid/pet owner/friend etc. Each one of us is a leader/ruler and we all have responsibilities. It's up to us if we do justice to those under us or not. Do we fit in this category or not?
A youth who has been brought up in the worship of Allah: YOU! You're young. You have energy, time, skills, health and the good life. You can be under His shade on the Day of Judgement. All you have to do is worship Allah sincerely. NOW! Not later, when you get older and weaker. Now is the time. The time you have is precious. Spend it in Allah's worship. Obey Him. Please Him. Love Him. He'll value it. He'll reward you for it. And no one can give you a better return than His.
A man whose heart is attached to the mosques: a man who loves going to the masjid to pray. He does not find it hard to leave all his important work for Allah's sake. He spends time in the masjid. He prays Salah, he recites Qur'an, he remembers Allah (dhikr), he socializes with fellow Muslims, he seeks knowledge and he indulges in other religious activities. He loves it all. His heart is attached to the mosques/masajid (places where people bow down/make sujood to Allah).
Two persons who love each other only for Allah's sake and they meet and part in Allah's cause only:  this one initially seemed the easiest to me, but actually it's quite hard. Despite all our efforts, I don't remember a gathering where I met people only for Allah's sake and His cause, and where nothing went wrong. Where we didn't backbite/cheat/lie/ignore a Sunnah/waste time in laghw.It's not easy to meet people for Allah's sake. But to make sure all you do is please Allah in that meeting and part with His cause as well, it's really hard. (Any tips for me?)
May Allah forgive our shortcomings and accept all our efforts and meetings for His sake.
A man who refuses the call of a charming woman of noble birth for illicit intercourse with her and says: I am afraid of Allah: what a man that'd be! Remember Yusuf (AS)? Yeah, he had the taqwa. And with Allah's help, he rejected the beautiful wife of 'Aziz. Reference: Surah Yusuf.
Anyhow, it's quite easy to indulge in haraam these days. Equally for men and for women. It always starts with a small step. All women don't come on strong like Aziz's wife. Neither do men. So beware of that first glance.
A man who gives charitable gifts so secretly that his left hand does not know what his right hand has given: secret charity, only for Allah's sake. Not to show off or anything. And the level of secrecy is clear enough by the phrase used in the Hadith.
A person who remembers Allah in seclusion and his eyes are then flooded with tears: he whispers to Allah in seclusion. He prays for forgiveness. He repents over his mistakes and sins. He begs for His Mercy. He hopes for Paradise. His heart fills with Allah's love. His eyes flood with tears on remembering Him.
Do you do it often? If not, you should. It's only the best feeling in the world.
I hope you found more than one categories that you fit in. If not, make it a target, rather a mission, to be listed among these lucky seven. The struggle will be worth it, inshaAllah. :)
