No Zakah on Horses (Ahadith 1201 - 1202)

Bismillah.
Volume 2, Book 24, Number 542:
Narrated Abu Huraira (radiallaahu `anhu):
Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, "There is no Zakat either on a horse or a slave belonging to a Muslim".
Volume 2, Book 24, Number 543:
Narrated Abu Huraira (radiallaahu `anhu):
The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallamsaid,"There is no Zakat either on a slave or on a horse belonging to a Muslim".
The animals on which zakaah is due are the an’aam animals, which are:
  • Camels
  • Cattle, including buffalo
  • Sheep, which includes goats
This applies if their number reaches the nisaab and they are put out to pasture, i.e. they graze and feed from plants on the land, and their owner does not purchase feed for them.
Other kinds of animals are not subject to zakaah unless they are for dealing and trading, in which case zakaah must be paid as for trade goods, such as a person who deals in ostriches, ducks, chickens, horses and so on.
If they are an’aam animals that are given feed, but their owner trades in them, then he should pay zakaah as for trade goods, so he should work out their value when one year has passed and pay one-quarter of one-tenth of their value as zakaah.
It says in al-Mawsoo’ah al-Fiqhiyyah (23/250):
The fuqaha’ are unanimously agreed that camels, cattle and sheep are the kinds of animals on which zakaah must be paid, and they quoted many ahaadeeth as evidence for that. There is a difference of opinion with regard to horses. As for mules, donkeys and other kinds of animals, no zakaah is due on them unless they are for trade. End quote.
More on the subject here.
As for the slavery part, go through this post.

Ill Thought (Hadith No. 935)

Assalamu`alaykum,
Bismillah.

Volume 2, Book 21, Number 236:
Narrated Abu-Wa'il:
'Abdullah said, "One night I offered the Tahajjud prayer with the Prophet and he kept on standing till an ill-thought came to me." We said, "What was the ill-thought?" He said, "It was to sit down and leave the Prophet (standing)."

We can so relate to this, no? Especially with Ramadan coming up. Think of the long taraweeh qiyaam. What comes to your mind? (Pause and think!)
And then imagine... why didn't such ill thoughts come to Prophet (SAW)'s mind? Why did he love to pray for long hours? His feet would swell and all he would say was "shall I not be a thankful slave?". :(
Wassalam.

Ways to Do Sadaqah (Hadith No. 862)

Assalamu`alaykum,
Bismillah.

Hadith no. 861 is a repeat. It's about one of the questions that we'll be asked in our grave. Must read!

Volume 2, Book 18, Number 862:
Narrated Asma:
No doubt the Prophet ordered people to manumit slaves during the solar eclipse.

Manumitting (freeing) slaves is sadaqah (charity). It's one of those things that Prophet (SAW) did or ordered to do during eclipse. See here.
There's no slaves today (as far as I know) that we can free as sadaqah, but there's a lot more that we can do. And we're talking monetary sadaqah. Any examples you can think of?

Feel free to share!
Wassalam.

Can A Slave Lead The Prayer? (Ahadith 661-662)

Salam,
Bismillah.

Imaam Bukhari says:
A`ishah (RA) was led in the Salat (prayer) by her slave Dhakwan who used to recite from the Mushaf [the written Qur'an (not from memory)]. Can an intelligent boy, a Bedouin or a boy who has not reached the age of puberty lead the Salat? (It is permissible according to) the statement of the Prophet (SAW) that the Imaam should be a person who knows the Qur'an more than the others.

Volume 1, Book 11, Number 661:
Narrated Ibn 'Umar:
When the earliest emigrants came to Al-'Usba a place in Quba', before the arrival of the Prophet, Salim - the slave of Abu Hudhaifa - who knew the Qur'an more than the others, used to lead them in prayer.

Volume 1, Book 11, Number 662:
Narrated Anas:
The Prophet said, "Listen and obey (your chief) even if an Ethiopian whose head is like a raisin were made your chief."

It's not wealth or status or lineage that makes a person worthy of leadership. Rather it's knowledge, wisdom and intellect. And once someone has been appointed leader over you, you have to obey him regardless of his age, wealth, appearance, lineage etc. Only when he asks you to do something against Allah's laws, can you defy him.

Wassalam.
