Travelling is Torture (Hadith No. 1554)

Bismillah.
Volume 3, Book 27, Number 31:
Narrated Abu Huraira (radiallaahu `anhu):
The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, "Traveling is a kind of torture as it prevents one from eating, drinking and sleeping properly. So, when one's needs are fulfilled, one should return quickly to one's family."
It's a coincidence that I'm travelling at the moment, and I love such coincidences. Moreover, these words of the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) resonate with my current situation. (LOL!)
No matter how comfortable your travelling is, it's always tiring. One way or the other, your food and sleep get disturbed. And Alhamdulillah for Islam, we're given relaxations in prayer and fasting during travel. It makes it so much easier, and I'm sure you'll agree with me.
Side note: I'm travelling with my family in order to visit relatives and get some other stuff done. We planned the time of our return this morning only. And when I read this Hadith a while ago, I sort of streamlined my intention. You see, I could just return to my hometown because I need to return, or I could return to my hometown thinking I'm obeying the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam). His words:
So, when one's needs are fulfilled, one should return quickly to one's family.
Difference is, the former gets me relief from torture, but I get relief and reward for the latter inshaAllah. And I, for one, am extremely greedy (for reward). ;)

Night Prayer of the Prophet [SAW] (Ahadith 946 - 948)

Assalamu`alaykum,
Bismillah.

Volume 2, Book 21, Number 247:
Narrated Al-Aswad:
I asked 'Aisha "How is the night prayer of the Prophet?" She replied, "He used to sleep early at night, and get up in its last part to pray, and then return to his bed. When the Muadh-dhin pronounced the Adhan, he would get up. If he was in need of a bath he would take it; otherwise he would perform ablution and then go out (for the prayer)."

Volume 2, Book 21, Number 248:
Narrated Abu Salma bin 'Abdur Rahman:
I asked 'Aisha, "How is the prayer of Allah's Apostle during the month of Ramadan." She said, "Allah's Apostle never exceeded eleven Rakat in Ramadan or in other months; he used to offer four Rakat-- do not ask me about their beauty and length, then four Rakat, do not ask me about their beauty and length, and then three Rakat." Aisha further said, "I said, 'O Allah's Apostle! Do you sleep before offering the Witr prayer?' He replied, 'O 'Aisha! My eyes sleep but my heart remains awake'!"

Volume 2, Book 21, Number 249:
Narrated 'Aisha:
I did not see the Prophet reciting (the Quran) in the night prayer while sitting except when he became old; when he used to recite while sitting, and when thirty or forty verses remained from the Sura, he would get up and recite them and then bow.
  • Sleep early.
  • Get up in the last part of the night.
  • Pray - 11 rak`aat + witr. Make it long and beautiful. <3
  • Sleep/lie down.
  • Get up for Fajr.
One may pray sitting in illness or old age. But should try their best to stand in qiyaam.
Wassalam.

Alarm Clocks or Cocks (Ahadith 931 - 933)

Assalamu`alaykum,
Bismillah.
Volume 2, Book 21, Number 232:
Narrated Masruq:
I asked 'Aisha which deed was most loved by the Prophet. She said, "A deed done continuously." I further asked, "When did he used to get up (in the night for the prayer)." She said, "He used to get up on hearing the crowing of a cock."
  • Most beloved deed by Allah: something that's done continuously. No off days.
  • Prophet (SAW) would sleep after `Ishaa', then get up in the last part (one-third) of the night for Tahajjud. That too, on hearing the cock's crowing.
That gives us proof for alarm clocks, no? Who knew it was a Sunnah?! :D
If you've got access to cocks, even better! (y)

Volume 2, Book 21, Number 233:
Narrated Al-Ashath:
He (the Prophet (p.b.u.h) ) used to get up for the prayer on hearing the crowing of a cock.

Volume 2, Book 21, Number 234:
Narrated 'Aisha:
In my house he (Prophet (p.b.u.h) ) never passed the last hours of the night but sleeping.

"Last hours" is not exactly 'hours'. It refers to the "last moments/minutes" of the night. And you'll find this to be true if you go through the Hadith in which Ibn `Abbas narrates his experience of staying the night at Prophet (SAW)'s house.
After praying Tahajjud, Prophet (SAW) would lie down for a while and then get up to offer the Fajr Sunnahs.

What's your night routine?
Wassalam.

Afternoon Nap on Friday (Ahadith 758 - 761)

Assalamu`alaykum,
Bismillah.
Last post from Kitaab-ul-Jumu`ah [Book of Friday]. Alhamdulillah.

Volume 2, Book 13, Number 758:
Narrated Sahl bin Sad:
There was a woman amongst us who had a farm and she used to sow Silq (a kind of vegetable) on the edges of streams in her farm. On Fridays she used to pull out the Silq from its roots and put the roots in a utensil. Then she would put a handful of powdered barley over it and cook it. The roots of the Silq were a substitute for meat. After finishing the Jumua prayer we used to greet her and she would give us that food which we would eat with our hands, and because of that meal, we used to look forward to Friday.

Volume 2, Book 13, Number 759:
Narrated Sahl:
As above with the addition: We never had an afternoon nap nor meals except after offering the Jumua prayer.

Volume 2, Book 13, Number 760:
Narrated Anas:
We used to offer the Jumua prayer early and then have the afternoon nap.

Volume 2, Book 13, Number 761:
Narrated Sahl:
We used to offer the Jumua prayer with the Prophet and then take the afternoon nap.
  • Silq, the vegetable, is the beetroot (chiqandar).
  • Companions used to go to the woman's place every Friday, just to enjoy the meal. And they looked forward to Friday for this very reason. Haha. Food! :D
  • They used to offer Jumu`ah, then eat and then take the afternoon nap.
Actually, the afternoon nap is very good for one's health. But there's some things you should know about it. For example, napping for 20-30 minutes and falling asleep for 2-3 hours are two different things. :P
And check this out. They say the best time to nap is between 1 PM - 3 PM = right after Jumu`ah/Dhuhr Salah. (y)
    See? Sunnah is cool.

Hehe. Loved this one!

Wassalam.
