Hajj - The Farewell Tawaaf (Hadith No. 1489)

Bismillah.
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 789:
Narrated 'Aisha (radiallaahu `anhaa):
We performed Hajj with the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) and performed Tawaf-al-ifada on the Day of Nahr (slaughtering). Safiya (radiallaahu `anhaa) got her menses and the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) desired from her what a husband desires from his wife. I said to him, "O Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam)! She is having her menses." He said, "Is she going to detain us?" We informed him that she had performed Tawaf-al-Ifada on the Day of Nahr. He said, "(Then you can) depart."
When the pilgrim wants to leave Makkah and go back to his country, he should not leave until he has performed the farewell tawaaf (tawaaf al-wadaa’), because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “No one should leave until the last thing that he does is (tawaaf) around the House.” Narrated by Muslim, 1327). According to another version, he told the people that the last thing they should do was (tawaaf) around the house, but he made an exception for women who were menstruating. Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 1755; Muslim, 1328.
Women who are menstruating or bleeding following childbirth do not have to do the farewell tawaaf; neither should they stand by the door of al-Masjid al-Haraam to bid farewell, because that was not narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).  This is one of the allowances that sharee’ah makes to women. Women who are menstruating can go back to their families even if they have not done the farewell tawaaf, so give thanks to Allaah for this allowance and blessing.
The last thing the pilgrim should do when he wants to leave is to circumambulate the House. If after the farewell tawaaf he stays and waits for his companions or to load his luggage or to buy something he needs on the way, there is nothing wrong with that, and he does not have to repeat the tawaaf, unless he intends to delay his journey, such as if he intended to travel at the beginning of the day and he did the farewell tawaaf, then he delays his travelling until the end of the day, for example; in this case he has to repeat the tawaaf so that it will be the last thing he does in Makkah.

Hajj - Woman Problems (Hadith No. 1412)

Bismillah.
Question: what exactly of Hajj/`Umrah can a woman NOT do during menstruation?
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 712:
Narrated 'Aisha (radiallaahu `anhu):
I was menstruating when I reached Mecca. So, I neither performed Tawaf of the Ka'ba, nor the Tawaf between Safa and Marwa. Then I informed Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) about it. He replied, "Perform all the ceremonies of Hajj like the other pilgrims, but do not perform Tawaf of the Ka'ba till you get clean (from your menses)."

Tawaaf around the Ka’bah

It is haraam for a menstruating woman to circumambulate the Ka’bah, whether that is obligatory or naafil, and it is not valid if she does it, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said to ‘Aa’ishah when she got her menses: “Do everything that the pilgrims do, but do not circumambulate the House until you become pure.”
As for the other actions of Hajj, such as saa’ee between al-Safa and al-Marwah, standing at ‘Arafah, staying overnight in Muzdalifah and Mina, stoning the jamaraat and other rituals of Hajj and ‘Umrah, they are not haraam for her. Based on that, if a female does tawaaf when she is pure, then her period begins immediately after she does tawaaf, or during sa’ee, there is nothing wrong with that.

Tawaaf al-wadaa’ (the farewell tawaaf) is waived in her case

If a female completes the rituals of Hajj and ‘Umrah, then she gets her menses before she goes home and that continues until she leaves, she may depart without doing the farewell tawaaf, because of the hadeeth of Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) who said: (the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)) told the people that the last thing they should do was (tawaaf) around the House, but he made an exception for women who were menstruating . Agreed upon.
But the tawaaf that is required for Hajj and ‘Umrah is not waived, and she must do it when she becomes pure.

Hajj Qiraan (Ahadith 1403 - 1404)

Bismillah.
Hadith no. 1402 (below) is a repeat. Read it here.
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 702:
Narrated 'Aisha (radiallaahu `anhaa): We set out with Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) in the year of his Last Hajj and we mended (the Ihram) for 'Umra. Then the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, "Whoever has a Hadi with him should assume Ihram for both Hajj and 'Umra, and should not finish it till he performs both of the them (Hajj and 'Umra)." When we reached Mecca, I had my menses. When we had performed our Hajj, the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) sent me with 'Abdur-Rahman (radiallaahu `anhu) to Tan'im and I performed the 'Umra. The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, "This is in lieu of your missed 'Umra." Those who had assumed Ihram for 'Umra performed Tawaf (between Safa and Marwa) and then finished their Ihram. And then they performed another Tawaf (between Safa and Marwa) after returning from Mina. And those who had assumed lhram for Hajj and 'Umra to get her ( Hajj-Qiran ) performed only one Tawaf (between Safa and Marwa).

Today's Ahadith:

Volume 2, Book 26, Number 703:
Narrated Nafi':
'Abdullah bin 'Abdullah bin 'Umar and his riding animal entered the house of Ibn 'Umar (radiallaahu `anhu). He (the son of Ibn 'Umar) said, "I fear that this year a battle might take place between the people and you might be prevented from going to the Ka'ba. I suggest that you should stay here." Ibn Umar (radiallaahu `anhu) said, "Once Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) set out for the pilgrimage, and the pagans of Quraish intervened between him and the Ka'ba. So, if the people intervened between me and the Ka'ba, I would do the same as Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) had done . . . "Verily, in Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) you have a good example." Then he added, "I make you a witness that I have intended to perform Hajj along with 'Umra." After arriving at Mecca, Ibn 'Umar (radiallaahu `anhu) performed one Tawaf only (between Safa and Marwa).

Volume 2, Book 26, Number 704:
Narrated Nafi':
Ibn 'Umar (radiallaahu `anhu) intended to perform Hajj in the year when Al-Hajjaj attacked Ibn Az-Zubair. Somebody said to Ibn 'Umar (radiallaahu `anhu), "There is a danger of an impending war between them." Ibn 'Umar (radiallaahu `anhu) said, "Verily, in Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) you have a good example. (And if it happened as you say) then I would do the same as Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) had done. I make you witness that I have decided to perform 'Umra." Then he set out and when he reached Al-Baida', he said, "The ceremonies of both Hajj and 'Umra are similar. I make you witness that I have made Hajj compulsory for me along with 'Umra." He drove (to Mecca) a Hadi which he had bought from (a place called) Qudaid and did not do more than that. He did not slaughter the Hadi or finish his Ihram, or shave or cut short his hair till the day of slaughtering the sacrifices (10th Dhul-Hijja). Then he slaughtered his Hadi and shaved his head and considered the first Tawaf (of Safa and Marwa) as sufficient for Hajj and 'Umra. Ibn 'Umar (radiallaahu `anhu) said, "Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) did the same."
Ibn `Umar (radiallaahu `anhu) performed Hajj Qiraan according to this incident. And when he said that he will do as the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) did, he meant that he'll perform Hajj Qiraan like the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) did the year after he was stopped at Hudaibiyah.
The one who is doing Qiraan, i.e., combining Hajj and ‘Umrah, only has to do one tawaaf and one saa‘i, like the one who is doing Ifraad (Hajj only).
The tawaaf that is obligatory in his case is tawaaf al-ifaadah. With regard to tawaaf al-qudoom, it is Sunnah. In his case, saa‘i may be done after tawaaf al-qudoom, or he may delay it and do it after tawaaf al-ifaadah. This is what is indicated by the saheeh Sunnah and is the view of most of the scholars.

Hajj - Station of Ibraheem (`alayhissalaam) (Hadith No. 1393)

Bismillah.
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 693:
Narrated Ibn Umar (radiallaahu `anhu):
The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) reached Mecca, circumambulated the Kaba seven times and then offered a two Rakat prayer behind Maqam ibrahim (`alayhissalaam). Then he went towards the Safa. Allah has said, "Verily, in Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) you have a good example."
Maqaam Ibraaheem (the Station of Ibraaheem) is the stone on which he stood when the building became higher than he could reach. So his son put this famous stone there for him so that he could stand on it when the building grew tall… The footprints of al-Khaleel (Ibraaheem, peace be upon him) remained on the rock until the beginning of Islam.
From al-Bidaayah wa’l-Nihaayah, 1/163
Ibn Hajr said:
What is meant by Maqaam Ibraaheem is the stone on which are the marks of his feet.
Ibn Katheer said:
The marks of his feet were clear on it and were well known; the Arabs were familiar with that during their jaahiliyyah and the Muslims also knew of that, as Anas ibn Maalik said: I saw the Maqaam on which were the marks of his toes and heels.
But they disappeared because of people touching them with their hands.
Ibn Jareer narrated that Qataadah said:
“ ‘And take you (people) the Maqaam (place) of Ibraaheem (Abraham) [or the stone on which Ibraaheem (Abraham) stood while he was building the Ka‘bah] as a place of prayer (for some of your prayers, e.g. two Rak‘at after the Tawaaf of the Ka‘bah at Makkah)’ [al-Baqarah 2:125 – interpretation of the meaning]. This means that they were commanded to pray at that place; they were not commanded to touch it. This ummah went beyond what was prescribed for it, to an extent that no previous nation did. We have heard from those who saw the marks of his heels and toes on it, but this ummah kept touching them until they disappeared.”
From Tafseer Ibn Katheer, 1/117
Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen said:
Undoubtedly Maqaam Ibraaheem is proven and that on which the glass enclosure is built is indeed Maqaam Ibraaheem. But the engraved marks that appear on it do not seem to be footprints, because what is well known from an historical point of view is that those footprints disappeared a long time ago. But these engraved marks were meant as a marker only, and we cannot be certain that these are the footprints of Ibraaheem (peace be upon him).
Eeee. Do you see it? :D [From 'Umrah 2011]
Eeee. Do you see it? :D [From 'Umrah 2011]
Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:
Some pilgrims performing Hajj and ‘Umrah stand at Maqaam Ibraaheem and recite a du’aa’ that was not narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). Some of them recite the du’aa’ in a loud voice, and disturb those who are praying the two rak’ahs after tawaaf behind the Maqaam. There is no specific du’aa’ to be recited at the Maqaam, rather the Sunnah is to pray two brief rak’ahs behind it, then to get up immediately after saying the tasleem so as to leave room for those who have more right to it, those who want to pray the two rak’ahs following tawaaf.
Is it obligatory to pray nawafil at this station? Answer here.

The Long Tawaaf (Hadith No. 1392)

Bismillah.
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 692:
Narrated Um Salama (the wife of the Prophet) (radiallaahu `anhaa):
I informed Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) (about my illness). (Through other sub-narrators, Um Salama (radiallaahu `anhaa) narrated that when Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) was at Mecca and had just decided to leave (Mecca) while she had not yet done Tawaf of the Kaba (and after listening to her). The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, "When the morning prayer is established, perform the Tawaf on your camel while the people are in prayer." So she did the same and did not offer the two Rakat of Tawaf until she came out of the Mosque.
This means she performed tawaaf behind the people who were praying, in a longer circuit. I just found myself a daleel for performing tawaaf on the upper floors of haram. :D
Also, I'd like to make a correction here. In Hadith No. 1386, I mentioned a similar Hadith thinking it meant Umm Salamah (radiallaahu `anhaa) was told to 'follow' someone in tawaaf. Now I realize it meant she could circumambulate 'behind' people while they were praying in congregation. Alhamdulillah. (y)

Hajj - Tawaaf al-Ifaadhah (Hadith No. 1391)

Bismillah.
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 691:
Narrated Ibn Abbas (radiallaahu `anhu):
The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) arrived at Mecca and performed Tawaf of the Kaba and Sa'i between Safa and Marwa, but he did not go near the Kaba after his Tawaf till he returned from Arafat.
The first one is called Tawaaf al-Qudoom and the one after `Arafaat is Tawaaf al-ifaadah during Hajj, which is also called tawaaf al-ziyaarah (tawaaf of visiting). It takes place after the standing in ‘Arafah, on the day of al-Adha or after it. It is one of the pillars or essential parts of the Hajj.

More on the Black Stone.. (Ahadith 1377 - 1382)

Bismillah.
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 677:
Narrated Ibn Abbas (radiallaahu `anhu):
In his Last Hajj the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) performed Tawaf of the Ka'ba riding a camel and pointed a bent-headed stick towards the Corner (Black Stone).
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 678:
Narrated Salim bin 'Abdullah that his father said:
"I have not seen the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) touching except the two Yemenite Corners (i.e. the ones facing Yemen)."
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 679:
Narrated Zaid bin Aslam that his father said:
"I saw 'Umar bin Al-Khattab (radiallaahu `anhu) kissing the Black Stone and he then said, (to it) 'Had I not seen Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) kissing you, (stone) I would not have kissed you.' "
Also posted here.
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 680:
Narrated Az-Zubair bin 'Arabi:
A man asked Ibn 'Umar (radiallaahu `anhu) about the touching of the Black Stone. Ibn 'Umar (radiallaahu `anhu) said, "I saw Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) touching and kissing it." The questioner said, "But if there were a throng (much rush) round the Ka'ba and the people overpowered me, (what would I do?)" He replied angrily, "Stay in Yemen (as that man was from Yemen). I saw Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) touching and kissing it."
LOL @ Ibn `Umar (radiallaahu `anhu)'s reply. :P
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 681:
Narrated Ibn Abbas (radiallaahu `anhu):
The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) performed Tawaf of the Ka'ba while riding a camel, and whenever he came in front of the Corner, he pointed towards it (with something).
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 682:
Narrated Ibn Abbas (radiallaahu `anhu):
The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) performed Tawaf of the Ka'ba riding a camel, and every time he came in front of the Corner (having the Black Stone), he pointed towards it with something he had with him and said Takbir.
Tawaaf or circumambulation of the Ka’bah is a pure act of worship and the basic principle with regard to acts of worship is tawqeef (i.e., to do them exactly as prescribed in the Qur'aan and Sunnah). It is proven from the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) that he used to say takbeer in his tawaaf every time he came in line with the Black Stone, and undoubtedly the person who is doing tawaaf comes in line with it at the end of the seventh circuit, so it is Sunnah for him to say takbeer just as it is Sunnah for him to say takbeer at the beginning of every circuit when he comes in line with it, following the example of the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), along with pointing at the Black Stone and kissing it if he can.
Details here.
Question: Is it okay to stand at the black stone and block tawaaf? Answer here.

Hajj - Ramal (Ahadith 1372 - 1376)

Bismillah.
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 672:
Narrated Ibn Abbas (radiallaahu `anhu):
When Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) and his companions came to Mecca, the pagans circulated the news that a group of people were coming to them and they had been weakened by the Fever of Yathrib (Medina). So the Prophet ordered his companions to do Ramal in the first three rounds of Tawaf of the Ka'ba and to walk between the two corners (The Black Stone and Yemenite corner). The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) did not order them to do Ramal in all the rounds of Tawaf out of pity for them.
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 673:
Narrated Salim that his father said:
I saw Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) arriving at Mecca; he kissed the Black Stone Corner first while doing Tawaf and did ramal in the first three rounds of the seven rounds (of Tawaf).
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 674:
Narrated Abdullah bin Umar (radiallaahu `anhu):
The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) did Ramal in (first) three rounds (of Tawaf), and walked in the remaining four, in Hajj and Umra.
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 675:
Narrated Zaid bin Aslam from his father who said:
"Umar bin Al-Khattab (radiallaahu `anhu) addressed the Corner (Black Stone) saying, 'By Allah! I know that you are a stone and can neither benefit nor harm. Had I not seen the Prophet touching (and kissing) you, I would never have touched (and kissed) you.' Then he kissed it and said, 'There is no reason for us to do Ramal (in Tawaf) except that we wanted to show off before the pagans, and now Allah has destroyed them.' 'Umar (radiallaahu `anhu) added, '(Nevertheless), the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) did that and we do not want to leave it (i.e. Ramal).'
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 676:
Narrated Nafi':
Ibn 'Umar (radiallaahu `anhu) said, "I have never missed the touching of these two stones of Ka'ba (the Black Stone and the Yemenite Corner) both in the presence and the absence of crowds, since I saw the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) touching them." I asked Nafi': "Did Ibn 'Umar (radiallaahu `anhu) use to walk between the two Corners?" Nafi' replied, "He used to walk in order that it might be easy for him to touch it (the Corner Stone)."
It is a Sunnah to trot in the first three circuits of tawaaf and it is Sunnah to jog in saa‘i between the two markers; these are two Sunnahs that apply to men, not women. One should walk fast between the two markers in all laps of saa’i, from al-Safa to al-Marwah and from al-Marwah to al-Safa.
Ibn Qudaamah said in al-Mughni (10/236), when describing saa’i between al-Safa and al-Marwah:
It means coming down from al-Safa and walking until you are level with the marker, which is the green mark that is attached to the corner of the mosque. When you are about six cubits away from it, you should walk quickly until you come in line with the other marker, then you should stop trotting and walk (normally) until you come to al-Marwah, then stand to face the qiblah and say du’aa’ as you did at al-Safa. … Then come down and walk in the place for walking, and trot in the place for trotting. End quote.
The scholars of the Standing Committee for Issuing Fatwas were asked about that and said:
Yes, it is the same when going from al-Marwah to al-Safa as when going from al-Safa to al-Marwah, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did that, as is proven in the saheeh ahaadeeth.
Back from 2011 `Umrah
Back from 2011 `Umrah
Ibn al-Mundhir said:
The scholars are unanimously agreed that women do not have to trot around the Ka’bah or between al-Safa and al-Marwah, and they do not have to uncover one shoulder, because the purpose behind these two actions is to show strength, and women are not included in that because the basic principle for women is to conceal themselves, but in trotting and baring one shoulder they would be uncovering themselves. End quote.

Inside the Ka`bah [contd.] (Ahadith 1369 - 1371)

Bismillah.
Hadith no. 1368 (below) is a repeat. Read it here.
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 668:
Narrated Salim that his father said,
"Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam), Usama bin Zaid (radiallaahu `anhu), Bilal (radiallaahu `anhu), and 'Uthman bin abu Talha (radiallaahu `anhu) entered the Ka'ba and then closed its door. When they opened the door I was the first person to enter (the Ka'ba). I met Bilal (radiallaahu `anhu) and asked him, "Did Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) offer a prayer inside (the Ka'ba)?" Bilal (radiallaahu `anhu) replied in the affirmative and said, "(The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) offered the prayer) in between the two right pillars."

Today's Ahadith:

Volume 2, Book 26, Number 669:
Narrated Nafi':
Whenever Ibn 'Umar (radiallaahu `anhu) entered the Ka'ba he used to walk straight keeping the door at his back on entering, and used to proceed on till about three cubits from the wall in front of him, and then he would offer the prayer there aiming at the place where Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) prayed, as Bilal (radiallaahu `anhu) had told him. There is no harm for any person to offer the prayer at any place inside the Ka'ba.
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 670:
Narrated Isma'li bin Abu Khalid:
'Abdullah bin Abu Aufa (radiallaahu `anhu) said, "Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) performed the 'Umra. He performed Tawaf of the Ka'ba and offered two Rakat behind the Maqam (Abraham (`alayhissalaam)'s place) and was accompanied by those who were screening him from the people." Somebody asked 'Abdullah, "Did Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) enter the Ka'ba?" 'Abdullah replied in the negative.
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 671:
Narrated Ibn Abbas (radiallaahu `anhu):
When Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) came to Mecca, he refused to enter the Ka'ba with idols in it. He ordered (idols to be taken out). So they were taken out. The people took out the pictures of Abraham (`alayhissalaam) and Ishmael (`alayhissalaam) holding Azlams in their hands. Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, "May Allah curse these people. By Allah, both Abraham (`alayhissalaam) and Ishmael (`alayhissalaam) never did the game of chance with Azlams." Then he entered the Ka'ba and said Takbir at its corners but did not offer the prayer in it.
  1. Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) did pray inside the Ka`bah. Scholars of Hadith have preferred Bilal (radiallaahu `anhu)'s report over Ibn Abbas (radiallaahu `anhu)'s report because what a person saw is a stronger proof than of what a person did not see. I suggest you read that again..
  2. Considering that the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) did not enter the Ka`bah when `Abdullah ibn `Abbas (radiallaahu `anhu)' was watching him, it gives proof that entering Ka`bah during Tawaf/`Umrah is not necessary. If one gets to get in (Hateem, for example), well and good. If not, no issues.
  3. Once you're inside the Ka`bah, you can pray facing any direction. How cool is that?
I don't know if the Hateem is to be included in this or not, though..

Kissing the Black Stone (Hadith No. 1367)

Bismillah.
Hadith no. 1365 and 1366 (below) are repeats. Read the post here.
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 665:
Narrated Ibn Abbas (radiallaahu `anhu):
The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, "As if I were looking at him, a black person with thin legs plucking the stones of the Ka'ba one after another. "
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 666:
Narrated Abu Huraira (radiallaahu `anhu):
Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, "DhusSuwaiqatain (the thin legged man) from Ethiopia will demolish the Ka'ba."

Today's Hadith:

Volume 2, Book 26, Number 667:
Narrated 'Abis bin Rabia:
'Umar (radiallaahu `anhu) came near the Black Stone and kissed it and said "No doubt, I know that you are a stone and can neither benefit anyone nor harm anyone. Had I not seen Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) kissing you I would not have kissed you."
Touching the black stone, kissing it or pointing to it is the first thing that a person does when he wants to circumambulate the Ka’bah (tawaaf), whether he is doing Hajj or ‘Umrah or a voluntary tawaaf. The Prophet SAWS (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) kissed it, and his ummah followed him in doing so. If a person is unable to kiss it he should touch it with his hand or with something, and then kiss that thing. If he is unable to do that he should point to it with his hand and say Allaahu akbar. Touching the Stone is one of the things by means of which Allaah erases sins.
More on it here.

Considerate Husband (Hadith No. 1327)

Bismillah.
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 627:
Narrated Aisha (radiallaahu `anhaa):
(the wife of the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) We set out with the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) in his last Hajj and we assumed Ihram for Umra. The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) then said, "Whoever has the Hadi with him should assume Ihram for Hajj along with 'Umra and should not finish the Ihram till he finishes both." I was menstruating when I reached Mecca, and so I neither did Tawaf round the Ka'ba nor Tawaf between Safa and Marwa. I complained about that to the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) on which he replied, "Undo and comb your head hair, and assume Ihram for Hajj (only) and leave the Umra." So, I did so. When we had performed the Hajj, the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) sent me with my brother 'Abdur-Rahman bin Abu Bakr (radiallaahu `anhu) to Tan'im. So I performed the 'Umra. The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said to me, "This 'Umra is instead of your missed one." Those who had assumed Ihram for 'Umra (Hajj-atTamattu) performed Tawaf round the Ka'ba and between Safa and Marwa and then finished their Ihram. After returning from Mina, they performed another Tawaf (between Safa and Marwa). Those who had assumed Ihram for Hajj and 'Umra together (Hajj-al-Qiran) performed only one Tawaf (between Safa and Marwa).

Every time I come across this incident, I just marvel at the caring husband that the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) was. He could have easily told `Aa'isha (radiallaahu `anhaa) to just let it be and make sure to not come for Hajj during her menstruation. He could have been irritated with her. But he wasn't. He didn't say any reproachful words to her ("You and your problems! -_-", for example..). Rather he sent her with her brother especially so she could complete her manaasik. And he reassured her that her missed `Umrah had been covered for. Considerate he was. :)
