Hajj - Overview (Hadith No. 1317)

Bismillah.
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 617:
Narrated 'Abdullah bin Abbas (radiallaahu `anhu):
The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) with his companions started from Medina after combing and oiling his hair and putting on two sheets of lhram (upper body cover and waist cover). He did not forbid anyone to wear any kind of sheets except the ones colored with saffron because they may leave the scent on the skin. And so in the early morning, the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) mounted his Mount while in Dhul-Hulaifa and set out till they reached Baida', where he and his companions recited Talbiya, and then they did the ceremony of Taqlid (which means to put the colored garlands around the necks of the Budn (camels for sacrifice). And all that happened on the 25th of Dhul-Qa'da. And when he reached Mecca on the 4th of Dhul-Hijja he performed the Tawaf round the Ka'ba and performed the Tawaf between Safa and Marwa. And as he had a Badana (singular of budun)and had garlanded it, he did not finish his Ihram. He proceeded towards the highest places of Mecca near Al-Hujun and he was assuming the Ihram for Hajj and did not go near the Ka'ba after he performed Tawaf (round it) till he returned from 'Arafat. Then he ordered his companions to perform the Tawaf round the Ka'ba and then the Tawaf of Safa and Marwa, and to cut short the hair of their heads and to finish their Ihram. And that was only for those people who had not garlanded Budn. Those who had their wives with them were permitted to contact them (have sexual intercourse), and similarly perfume and (ordinary) clothes were permissible for them.
Here's a detailed description of Hajj.

And he should not wear clothes which are scented with saffron or Wars (kinds of Perfumes) . "

Hajj - Miqaat (Ahadith 1297 - 1310)

Bismillah.
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 597:
Narrated Zaid bin Jubair:
I went to visit 'Abdullah bin 'Umar (radiallaahu `anhu) at his house which contained many tents made of cotton cloth and these were encircled with Suradik (part of the tent). I asked him from where, should one assume Ihram for Umra. He said, "Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) had fixed as Miqat (singular of Mawaqit) Qarn for the people of Najd, Dhul-Hulaifa for the people of Medina, and Al-Juhfa for the people of Sham."
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 598:
Narrated Ibn Abbas (radiallaahu `anhu):
The people of Yemen used to come for Hajj and used not to bring enough provisions with them and used to say that they depend on Allah. Volume 2, Book 26, Number 599:

Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) made Dhul-Huiaifa as the Miqat for the people of Medina; Al-Juhfa for the people of Sham; Qarn-al-Manazil for the people of Najd; and Yalamlam for the people of Yemen; and these Mawaqit are for the people at those very places, and besides them for those who come thorough those places with the intention of performing Hajj and 'Umra; and whoever is living within these boundaries can assume lhram from the place he starts, and the people of Mecca can assume Ihram from Mecca.
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 600:

So, these (above mentioned) are the Mawaqit for all those living at those places, and besides them for those who come through those places with the intention of performing Hajj and 'Umra and whoever lives within these places should assume Ihram from his dwelling place, and similarly the people of Mecca can assume lhram from Mecca.

And these Mawaqlt are for those living at those very places, and besides them for those who come through those places with the intention of performing Hajj and Umra; and whoever is living inside these places can assume lhram from his own dwelling place, and the people of Mecca can assume lhram from Mecca.
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 605:

The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) fixed Qarn as the Miqat for the people of Najd, it is beyond our way and it is difficult for us to pass through it." He said, "Take as your Miqat a place situated opposite to Qarn on your usual way. So, he fixed Dhatu-Irq (as their Miqat)."
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 607:
Narrated Nafi:
'Abdullah bin 'Umar (radiallaahu `anhu) said, "Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) made his camel sit (i.e. he dismounted) at Al-Batha' in Dhul-Hulaifa and offered the prayer." 'Abdullah bin 'Umar (radiallaahu `anhu) used to do the same.

Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) used to go (for Hajj) via Ash-Shajara way and return via Muarras way; and no doubt, whenever Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) went to Mecca, he used to offer the prayer in the Mosque of Ash-Shajara; and on his return, he used to offer the prayer at Dhul-Hulaifa in the middle of the valley, and pass the night there till morning.
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 609:
Narrated 'Umar (radiallaahu `anhu):
In the valley of Al-'Aqiq I heard Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) saying, "Tonight a messenger came to me from my Lord and asked me to pray in this blessed valley and to assume Ihram for Hajj and 'Umra together. "
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 610:
Narrated Musa bin 'Uqba:
Salim bin 'Abdullah's father said, "The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said that while resting in the bottom of the valley at Mu'arras in Dhul-Hulaifa, he had been addressed in a dream: 'You are verily in a blessed valley.' " Salim made us to dismount from our camels at the place where 'Abdullah (radiallaahu `anhu) used to dismount, aiming at the place where Allah's Apostle had rested and it was below the Mosque situated in the middle of the valley in between them (the residence) and the road.
Must do after reaching miqaat: put on Ihram (if you haven't already) and recite talbiyah.
One may put on Ihram before reaching miqaat, or on reaching miqaat. But if he crosses miqaat without putting on Ihram, he has to go back and renew intention.

Women, Jihaad and Hajj Mabrur (Ahadith 1294 - 1296)

Bismillah.
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 594:
Narrated Abu Huraira (radiallaahu `anhu):
The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) was asked, "Which is the best deed?" He said, "To believe in Allah and His Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam)." He was then asked, "Which is the next (in goodness)?" He said, "To participate in Jihad in Allah's Cause." He was then asked, "Which is the next?" He said, "To perform Hajj-Mabrur."
Above Hadith has been posted before as well. Read it here.
After belief in Allah and Jihad in His Cause comes Hajj Mabrur. A Hajj Mabrur (an accepted Hajj) is a Hajj performed--overall--in a manner pleasing to Allah, and its signs are that a person returns with resolve and determination to fulfill their duty to Allah in a pleasing manner.
If a person completes his pilgrimage in the right manner and completes it only for the sake of Allah then the Hajj can compensate for his every sin. This is shown in the following Hadith related by Abu Hurairah (radiallaahu `anhu)  that the Apostle of Allah (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam)  said:
"Whoever performs the Hajj and commits no lustful act during it nor disobeys God (in any other way) shall return from it as pure and sinless as he was at the time of his birth." Bukhari & Muslim
We can understand from the hadith that if anyone performs the Hajj and during it, abstains from all lustful things and every other act of defiance to God which falls within the spheres of lewdness, his sins will be forgiven and he will return from it as spotless as he was when he had been born. This type of Hajj is called Hajj Mabroor and if this is granted to him then he has obtained a great gift and favor in this world as well as the hereafter.
The reward for Hajj Mabroor is more clear in the following Hadith which is related by Abu Hurairah (radiallaahu `anhu), that Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said:
"From one Umra to another (i.e. the two Umras) become an atonement for the sins committed during the period intervening between them and the reward on Hajj Mabroor (i.e. pure and untainted Haj) is paradise itself and nothing less." Bukhari & Muslim
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 595:
Narrated 'Aisha (radiallaahu `anhaa):
(the mother of the faithful believers) I said, "O Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam)! We consider Jihad as the best deed." The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, "The best Jihad (for women) is Hajj Mabrur."
Women can start planning + preparing for Hajj Mabrur now. :)
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 596:
Narrated Abu Huraira (radiallaahu `anhu):
The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, "Whoever performs Hajj for Allah's pleasure and does not have sexual relations with his wife, and does not do evil or sins then he will return (after Hajj free from all sins) as if he were born anew."
And that is the reward for Hajj Mabrur. May Allah grant us all the tawfiq to perform such a Hajj.

`Umrah on a Camel (Hadith No. 1293)

Bismillah.
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 593:
Narrated Al-Qasim bin Muhammad:
'Aisha (radiallaahu `anhaa) said, "O Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam)! You performed 'Umra but I did not." He said, "O 'Abdur-Rahman! Go along with your sister and let her perform 'Umra from Tan'im." 'Abdur-Rahman (radiallaahu `anhu) made her ride over the pack-saddle of a she-camel and she performed 'Umra.
`Aa'ishah (radiallaahu `anhaa) could not perform the `Umrah with the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) because she was caught up with menses in those days. So when they were leaving, Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) asked her brother to accompany her for `Umrah so she did not get left behind. :)
And she went on a camel. I wish that was possible these days. Imagine doing tawaaf and sa`ee in cars. :P
The issue on performing Hajj during menstruation covered here.

Hajj - Simplicity (Hadith No. 1292)

Bismillah.
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 592:
Narrated Thumama bin 'Abdullah bin Anas:
Anas (radiallaahu `anhu) performed the Hajj on a pack-saddle and he was not a miser. Anas (radiallaahu `anhu) said, "Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallamperformed Hajj on a pack-saddle and the same Mount was carrying his baggage too."
Among the purposes of Hajj, as outlined by Shaykh Yahya ibn Ibraheem, is:
It trains him to be content with modest clothing and accommodation, when he wears two pieces of cloth and it is sufficient for him, and his accommodation gives him just enough room to sleep.
Seeking comfort isn't wrong, but traveling in simplicity and modesty isn't bad either. It's a training for the body and soul because of the hardships that come with it. And it's a Sunnah as well - Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) had one camel which carried him and his baggage for the whole journey (multiple nights and days of traveling - not a joke!).
Simplicity is cool. B)

Hajj - Talbiyah (Ahadith 1290 - 1291)

Bismillah.
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 590:
Narrated Ibn 'Umar (radiallaahu `anhu):
I saw that Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) used to ride on his Mount at Dhul Hulaifa and used to start saying, "Labbaik" when the Mount stood upright.
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 591:
Narrated Jabir bin 'Abdullah (radiallaahu `anhu):
that Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) started saying, "Labbaik" from Dhul-Hulaifa when his Mount stood upright carrying him.
Hajj is the symbol of Tawheed (the Oneness of Allaah) from the first moment the pilgrim enters ihraam. Jaabir ibn ‘Abd-Allaah said, describing the Hajj of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him): “Then he srated to say the words of Tawheed, ‘“Labbayka Allaahumma labbayk, labbayka laa shareeka laka labbayk. Inna al-hamd wa’l-ni’mata laka wa’l-mulk, laa shareeka lak  (Here I am, O Allaah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Verily all praise and blessings are Yours, and all sovereignty, You have no partner).’” Narrated by Muslim.
This trains the soul to acknowledge the Oneness of Allaah and to be sincere towards Him.
The pilgrim starts his Hajj with Tawheed, and continues to recite the Talbiyah with its words of Tawheed, and he moves from one action to the next with Tawheed.
The Talbiyah has a number of meanings, such as:
  1. Labbayka Allaahumma labbayk (Here I am, O Allaah, here I am)” is one response after another, which is repeated to show that the response is lasting and ongoing.
  2. Labbayka Allaahumma labbayk (Here I am, O Allaah, here I am)” means, I submit and submit again, i.e., ongoing submission.
  3. It may mean staying in one place (labba bi’l-makaan) and clinging to it, which means, I am persisting in obeying You, thus emphasizing the meaning of continuous servitude to Allaah.
  4. One of the meanings of the Talbiyah is confirming love of Allaah. There is an Arabic phrase imra’ah labbah (a loving woman) which refers to a woman who loves her child. One only says “Labbayk (Here I am at your service)” to a person whom one loves and respects.
  5. It implies sincerity, as in the phrase lubb al-shay’ which means the essence of a thing, and lubb al-rajul which means a man’s mind and heart.
  6. It implies drawing close, as in the word ilbaab, which means drawing close, so it emphasizes the meaning of seeking to draw closer and closer to Allaah.
  7. It is a symbol of the Tawheed of the religion of Ibraaheem, which is the spirit and aim of Hajj, indeed the spirit and aim of all the acts of worship. Hence the Talbiyah is the key to this act of worship that the pilgrim is embarking on.
The muhrim (person who has entered ihraam) should recite the Talbiyah a great deal, especially when circumstances and times change, such as when going up to a high place or going down to a low place, or when night or day begin. After that he should ask Allaah for His good pleasure and for Paradise, and seek refuge in His Mercy from the Fire.

Hajj - Obligation (Hadith No. 1289)

Bismillah.

Kitaab-ul-Hajj [Book of Pilgrimage] starts today..

Volume 2, Book 26, Number 589:
Narrated 'Abdullah bin Abbas (radiallaahu `anhu):
Al-Fadl (radiallaahu `anhu) (his brother) was riding behind Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) and a woman from the tribe of Khath'am came and Al-Fadl (radiallaahu `anhu) started looking at her and she started looking at him. The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) turned Al-Fadl's face to the other side. The woman said, "O Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam)! The obligation of Hajj enjoined by Allah on His devotees has become due on my father and he is old and weak, and he cannot sit firm on the Mount; may I perform Hajj on his behalf?" The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) replied, "Yes, you may." That happened during the Hajj-al-Wida (of the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam)).
Allah says in Aal-i-`Imraan: 96-97:

(96. Verily, the first House (of worship) appointed for mankind was that at Bakkah (Makkah), full of blessing, and a guidance for Al-`Alamin (mankind and Jinn). (97. In it are manifest signs (for example), the Maqam (station) of Ibrahim; whosoever enters it, he attains security. And Hajj to the House is a duty that mankind owes to Allah, for those who are able to undertake the journey; and whoever disbelieves, then Allah stands not in need of any of the `Alamin.)
In his Tafsir, Imaam Ibn Kathir says:
Allah said,

﴿وَللَّهِ عَلَى النَّاسِ حِجُّ الْبَيْتِ مَنِ اسْتَطَـعَ إِلَيْهِ سَبِيلاً﴾

(And Hajj to the House is a duty that mankind owes to Allah, for those who are able to undertake the journey) ﴿3:97﴾.
This Ayah established the obligation of performing Hajj. There are many Hadiths that mention it as one of the pillars and fundamentals of Islam, and this is agreed upon by the Muslims. According to texts and the consensus of the scholars, it is only obligatory for the adult Muslim to perform it once during his lifetime. Imam Ahmad recorded that Abu Hurayrah said that the Messenger of Allah once gave a speech in which he said,

«أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ قَدْ فُرِضَ عَلَيْكُمُ الْحَجُّ فَحُجُّوا»

(O people! Hajj has been enjoined on you, therefore, perform Hajj.)
A man asked, "Is it every year, O Allah's Messenger'' The Prophet remained silent until the man repeated the question three times and he then said,

«لَوْ قُلْتُ: نَعَمْ لَوَجَبَتْ وَلَمَا اسْتَطَعْتُم»

(Had I said yes, it would have become an obligation and you would not have been able to fulfill it.) He said next,
(Leave me as I leave you, those before you were destroyed because of their many questions and disputing with their Prophets. If I command you with something, perform it as much as you can. If I forbid something for you, then refrain from it.) Muslim recorded similarly.
There are several categories of "the ability to under take the journey''. There is the physical ability of the person himself and the ability that is related to other things as mentioned in the books of jurisprudence. Abu `Isa At-Tirmidhi recorded that Ibn `Umar said, "A man stood up and asked the Messenger of Allah , `O Messenger of Allah! Who is the pilgrim' He said, `He who has untidy hair and clothes.' Another man asked, `Which Hajj is better, O Messenger of Allah' He said, `The noisy (with supplication to Allah) and bloody (with sacrifice).' Another man asked, `What is the ability to undertake the journey, O Messenger of Allah' He said, `Having provision and a means of transportation.''' This is the narration that Ibn Majah collected. Al-Hakim narrated that Anas said that the Messenger of Allah was asked about Allah's statement,

﴿مَنِ اسْتَطَـعَ إِلَيْهِ سَبِيلاً﴾

(for those who are able to undertake the journey;) ﴿3:97﴾ "What does `able to undertake the journey' mean'' The Prophet answered, "Having sufficient provision and a means of transportation.'' Al-Hakim stated that this Hadith's chain of narration is authentic, following the guidelines of Muslim in his Sahih, but the Two Sahihs did not collect it. Ahmad recorded that Ibn `Abbas said that the Messenger of Allah said,

«مَنْ أَرَادَ الْحَجَّ فَلْيَتَعَجَّل»

(Whoever intends to perform Hajj, let him rush to perform it.) Abu Dawud also collected this Hadith.
Allah said,

﴿وَمَن كَفَرَ فَإِنَّ الله غَنِىٌّ عَنِ الْعَـلَمِينَ﴾

(...and whoever disbelieves, then Allah stands not in need of any of the `Alamin) ﴿3:97﴾.
Ibn `Abbas, Mujahid and several others commented on this Ayah, "Whoever denies the necessity of Hajj becomes disbeliever, and Allah is far Richer than to need him.'' Al-Hafiz Abu Bakr Al-Isma`ili recorded that `Umar bin Al-Khattab said, "Whoever can afford Hajj but did not perform it, there is no difference in his case if he dies while Jew or Christian.'' This has an authentic chain of narration leading to `Umar.

Tahneek & Branding (Hadith No. 1278)

Bismillah.
Hadith no. 1277 (below) is a repeat. Read it here.
Volume 2, Book 24, Number 577:
Narrated Anas (radiallaahu `anhu):
Some people from 'Uraina tribe came to Medina and its climate did not suit them, so Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) allowed them to go to the herd of camels (given as Zakat) and they drank their milk and urine (as medicine) but they killed the shepherd and drove away all the camels. So Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) sent (men) in their pursuit to catch them, and they were brought, and he had their hands and feet cut, and their eyes were branded with heated pieces of iron and they were left in the Harra (a stony place at Medina) biting the stones.

Today's Hadith:

Volume 2, Book 24, Number 578:
Narrated Anas bin Malik (radiallaahu `anhu):
took 'Abdullah bin Abu Talha (radiallaahu `anhu) to Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) to perform Tahnik for him. (Tahnik was a custom among the Muslims that whenever a child was born they used to take it to the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) who would chew a piece of date and put a part of its juice in the child's mouth). I saw the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) and he had an instrument for branding in his hands and was branding the camels of Zakat.
Branding of animals is allowed, but branding on the face is not. Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) forbade this act and cursed its doer.
About Tahneek: It is Sunnah (recommended) to do tahneek for the child when he is born:
It was narrated that Anas ibn Maalik (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The son of Abu Talhah was sick. Abu Talhah went out and the child died, and when Abu Talhah returned he said, “What happened to my son?” Umm Sulaym (his wife) said, ‘He is quieter than he was.” Then she brought him his dinner and he ate, then he had marital relations with her, and when he finished she said, “They buried the child.” The following morning, Abu Talhah went to the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and told him what had happened. He said, “Did you have marital relations last night?” He said, “Yes.” He said, “O Allaah, bless them.” She later gave birth to a boy. Abu Talhah said to me, “Keep him until I bring him to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).” He brought him to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and I sent some dates with him. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) took him and said, “Is there anything with him?” They said, “Yes, some dates.” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) took some and chewed it, then he took some from his mouth and put it in the child’s mouth (tahneek), and named him ‘Abd-Allaah.
Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 5153; Muslim, 2144
Al-Nawawi said:
The scholars are agreed that it is mustahabb (preferred)to do tahneek with dates for the child when he is born; if that is not possible then to use some similar kind of sweet. The dates should be chewed until they become soft enough to be swallowed, then the child’s mouth should be opened and a little of the dates put in his mouth.

Double-Checking is a Sunnah (Hadith No. 1276)

Bismillah.
Volume 2, Book 24, Number 576:
Narrated Abu Humaid Al-Sa'idi (radiallaahu `anhu):
Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) appointed a man called Ibn Al-Lutbiya, from the tribe of Al-Asd to collect Zakat from Bani Sulaim. When he returned, (after collecting the Zakat) the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) checked the account with him.
So double check whatever it is that you assign to someone. Especially money matters. It's a Sunnah!

Compensation, Rikaaz and Khumus (Hadith No. 1275)

Bismillah.
Volume 2, Book 24, Number 575:
Narrated Abu Huraira (radiallaahu `anhu):
Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, "There is no compensation for one killed or wounded by an animal or by falling in a well, or because of working in mines; but Khumus is compulsory on Rikaz."
As for the first part of the Hadith, scholars explain that if someone gets hurt (or their property gets damaged) because of another's animal or by falling in a well, or because of working in mines, there are two possible reasons:
  1. Either the owner of that animal/well/mine was responsible;
  2. Or he/she was not.
In case the owner was responsible (e.g. he was guiding the animal), he'll pay compensation for the loss from his own wealth. And if he was not responsible, no compensation is due on him. More on it here.
Rikaaz refers to what is buried in the earth of the wealth of the Jaahiliyyah. The people of the Jaahiliyyah are the ones who existed before the coming of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), no matter what religion they followed. Islam has enjoined that when it is extracted, the khums be paid on it, as zakaah according to some scholars and as fay’ according to others. The rest belongs to whoever extracted it, if it was extracted from land that he owns, or from ruins or common land such as the street and so on.
