Hajj - Minaa [contd.] (Ahadith 1499 - 1501)

Bismillah.
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 799:
Narrated Ibn 'Umar (radiallaahu `anhu):
The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) permitted (them).

Volume 2, Book 26, Number 800:
Narrated Ibn 'Umar (radiallaahu `anhu):
That the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) allowed (as above).

Volume 2, Book 26, Number 801:
Narrated Ibn 'Umar (radiallaahu `anhu):
Al-Abbas (radiallaahu `anhu) asked the permission from the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) to stay at Mecca during the nights of Mina in order to provide water to the people, so the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) allowed him.
Previously discussed here.
Staying overnight in Mina during the Days of Tashreeq is obligatory according to the majority of fuqahaa’; the one who fails to do that with no excuse is obliged to offer a sacrifice. According to the majority of scholars one should stay there for most of the night.
(al-Mawsoo’ah al-Fiqhiyyah, part 17, p. 58).
Not staying overnight in Mina during the Days of Tashreeq may be one of the following cases:
The first case: when a person does not stay overnight in Mina because he has an excuse.
Shaykh Ibn Baaz was asked about the ruling on a person who does not stay overnight in Mina during the Days of Tashreeq. He said:
He is not obliged to offer any sacrifice because Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): ‘So keep your duty to Allaah and fear Him as much as you can’ [al-Taghaabun 64:16] – whether he did not stay overnight at Mina because of sickness or because there was no room, of for some similar legitimate excuse such as those who bring water to the pilgrims and those who tend sheep, and whatever else comes under the same rulings.
The second case: when a person does not stay overnight (in Mina) during the days of Tahsreeq with no excuse.
The Shaykh (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:
Whoever does not stay overnight in Mina during the Days of Tashreeq with no excuse has failed to do something which was prescribed by the Messenger of Allaah SAWS (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) in both word and deed, and by the fact that he made a concession for some of those who have excuses such as shepherds and those who bring water to the pilgrims. Concessions can only be made when there is something which has to be done. Hence staying overnight in Mina during the Days of Tashreeq is considered to be one of the obligatory duties of Hajj, according to the more correct of the two scholarly views, and whoever does not do that and has no legitimate excuse has to offer a sacrifice, because it was reported that Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with them both) said: “Whoever fails to do one of the rituals [of Hajj] or forgets it, let him offer a sacrifice.” It is sufficient to offer one sacrifice for not staying overnight in Mina during the days of Tashreeq.”
(Majmoo’ Fataawa al-Shaykh Ibn Baaz – may Allaah have mercy on him – vol. 5, p. 182)
He should offer the sacrifice and share out its meat among the poor in the Haram, and he should not eat any of it. And Allaah knows best.

Eating from the Slaughtered Animal's Meat (Ahadith 1477 - 1478)

Bismillah.
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 777:
Narrated Ibn Juraij:
'Ata' said, "I heard Jabir bin 'Abdullah (radiallaahu `anhu) saying, 'We never ate the meat of the Budn for more than three days of Mina. Later, the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) gave us permission by saying: 'Eat and take (meat) with you. So we ate (some) and took (some) with us.' " I asked 'Ata', "Did Jabir (radiallaahu `anhu) say (that they went on eating the meat) till they reached Medina?" 'Ata' replied, "No."

Volume 2, Book 26, Number 778:
Narrated 'Amra:
I heard 'Aisha (radiallaahu `anhaa) saying, "We set out (from Medina) along with Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) five days before the end of Dhul-Qa'da with the intention of performing Hajj only. When we approached Mecca, Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) ordered those who had no Hadi along with them to finish the lhram after performing Tawaf of the Ka'ba, (Safa and Marwa). 'Aisha (radiallaahu `anhaa) added, "Beef was brought to us on the Day of Nahr and I said, 'What is this?' Somebody said, 'The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) has slaughtered (cows) on behalf of his wives.' "
This Hadith has been discussed before as well. Read it here.
Both these Ahadith give evidence that it's okay to eat from the animal you sacrifice. Rather, it's Sunnah. Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) encouraged companions to do so (as in the first Hadith), and sent some for his wives (as in the second Hadith). So eat from the meat whenever an animal is sacrificed (Eid/aqeeqah/Hajj etc.).

So Much Charity (Hadith No. 1476)

Bismillah.
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 776:
Narrated 'Ali (radiallaahu `anhu):
The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) offered one hundred Budn as Hadi and ordered me to distribute their meat (in charity) and I did so. Then he ordered me to distribute their covering sheets in charity and I did so. Then he ordered me to distribute their skins in charity and I did so.
100 camels. Their meat, skins, everything was given in charity. Unbelievable! Who would do that?!
If you think about it, one camel can suffice seven families. So he gave in charity what would've been enough for 700 families (they would divide it further for use at home and giving in charity). He gave it all away. SubhanAllah, what a wise man! He always preferred the `aysh (life) of the Aakhirah over this life. And what is charity but a ticket to Jannah?
You possess only what will not be lost in a shipwreck.
As for the fiqh of it, we've already discussed in one of the previous posts that portions for charity/family etc. are not fixed for sacrificial animals. Ratio can be varied according to need.

Butcher's Wage (Ahadith 1474 - 1475)

Bismillah.
Hadith no. 1473 (below) is a repeat. Read it here.
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 773:
Narrated Anas bin Malik (radiallaahu `anhu):
The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) offered four Rakat of Zuhr prayer at Medina and two Rakat of 'Asr prayer at Dhul-Hulaifa. Narrated Aiyub: "A man said: Anas (radiallaahu `anhu) said, "Then he (the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) passed the night there till dawn and then he offered the morning (Fajr) prayer, and mounted his Mount and when it arrived at Al-Baida' he assumed Ihram for both 'Umra and Hajj."

Today's Ahadith:

Volume 2, Book 26, Number 774:
Narrated 'Ali (radiallaahu `anhu):
The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) sent me to supervise the (slaughtering of) Budn (Hadi camels) and ordered me to distribute their meat, and then he ordered me to distribute their covering sheets and skins. 'All added, "The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) ordered me to supervise the slaughtering (of the Budn) and not to give anything (of their bodies) to the butcher as wages for slaughtering."

Volume 2, Book 26, Number 775:
Narrated 'Ali (radiallaahu `anhu):
The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) ordered me to supervise the (slaughtering) of Budn (Hadi camel) and to distribute their meat, skins and covering sheets in charity and not to give anything (of their bodies) to the butcher as wages for slaughtering.
It is not permissible to sell part of the sacrificial animal or udhiyah (sacrifice on Eid), or to sell all of it, except in cases where it is done in accordance with the purpose of the sacrifice, because what a person has given to Allaah cannot be sold at all.
It says in al-Mughni: It is not permissible to sell any part of it – i.e., the sacrificial animal – but if the butcher is poor and he gives him something because he is poor, in addition to the wages that he gives him, that is permissible, because he is entitled to take some of it because of being poor, not as payment for his work. End quote (3/222)
Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen said: It is haraam to sell any part of the udhiyah, whether the meat or anything else, even the skin. The butcher should not be given anything from it in partial payment for his work, because that is like selling. (Risaalah Ahkaam al-Hadiy wa’l-Udhiyah)

Etiquette of Slaughtering Animals (Ahadith 1471 - 1472)

Bismillah.
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 771:
Narrated Zaid bin Jubair:
I saw Ibn 'Umar (radiallaahu `anhu) passing by a man who had made his Badana sit to slaughter it. Ibn 'Umar (radiallaahu `anhu) said, "Slaughter it while it is standing with one leg tied up as is the tradition of Muhammad (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam)."

Volume 2, Book 26, Number 772:
Narrated Anas (radiallaahu `anhu):
The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) offered four Rakat of Zuhr prayer at Medina; and two Rakat of 'Asr prayer at Dhul-hulaifa and spent the night there and when (the day) dawned, he mounted his Mount and started saying, "None has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and Glorified be Allah." When he reached Al-Baida' he recited Talbiya for both Hajj and 'Umra. And when he arrived at Mecca, he ordered them (his companions) to finish their Ihram. The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) slaughtered seven Budn (camel) with his own hands while the camels were standing He also sacrificed two horned rams (black and white in color) at Medina.
There are certain etiquettes one must abide by when slaughtering an animal for a sacrificial offering. However, these etiquettes are not conditional for the validity of a sacrifice. So the sacrifice is still valid even in their absence. Among these etiquettes are:
1. He should face the Qiblah with the animal at the time of slaughtering.
2. He must slaughter the animal in a good manner, which is by quickly and firmly passing a sharpened blade over the neck area.
Some scholars hold the view that this etiquette is obligatory based on the implication found in the Prophet’s saying: "Verily Allaah has prescribed proficiency in everything. So when you kill, kill proficiently. And when you sacrifice, sacrifice proficiently. Each of you should sharpen his blade and lessen the pain inflicted on his sacrificial offering." [Reported by Muslim]
This opinion is the correct view.
3. The slaughter of a camel must be done by cutting the area just below the neck and above the chest. This is known as nahr. As for all other types of animals, their necks should be sliced.
A camel should be slaughtered while standing and with its (front) left leg tied. If it is difficult to do it this way, the camel can be slaughtered while kneeling.
As for all of the other animals, they are to be slaughtered while lying flat on their left side. However, if the one slaughtering is a lefty, he may use his left hand and lay the animal down on its right side. This is so long as doing it this way is easier upon the animal and more convenient for the one slaughtering.
It is also prescribed for him to place his foot on the collar of the animal to give him better control. As for making the animal kneel and tying its legs together, there is no basis for this in the Sunnah. Some scholars mentioned that one of the reasons why the legs should not be tied is so that the outflow of blood can increase as a result of the animal’s constant motion and instability.
4. The throat and esophagus of the animal should be cut in addition to its jugular veins. For more on this, refer to the discussion on this under the eighth condition of slaughtering.
5. The blade should be concealed from the view of the animal when sharpening it. This means that the animal should not see the blade until the time of the actual slaughter.
6. One should glorify Allaah (by saying Allaahu Akbar) after mentioning His Name (by saying Bismillaah) when slaughtering.
7. One should name the person whom the sacrificial offering (udhiyah) or ‘aqeeqah is being performed for after mentioning Allaah’s Name and glorifying Him. He should also ask Allaah to accept it from him.
So for example, he should say: "In the Name of Allaah, Allaah is the Greatest. O Allaah, this is from You and for You on behalf of me" if he is performing the slaughter for himself or "…on behalf of so and so" if the slaughter is being done on behalf of someone else. And he should say: "O Allaah, accept this from me" if he is performing the slaughter for himself or "…accept this from so and so" if the slaughter is being done on behalf of someone else.

Slaughter the Animals for Sacrifice Yourself (Hadith No. 1470)

Bismillah.
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 770:
Narrated Sahl bin Bakkar:
The narration of Anas (radiallaahu `anhu) abridged, saying, "The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) slaughtered seven Budn (camels) while standing, with his own hands. On the day of 'Id-ul-Adha he slaughtered (sacrificed) two horned rams, black and white in color.
  1. It's Sunnah to slaughter your animal of sacrifice yourself. If you don't want to do the whole thing, at least slit the throat (for goat/sheep/cow etc.).
  2. Although one sheep (or 1/7th of a cow or camel) is enough for one man and his family, there's no limit to the maximum amount of animals you may slaughter. The more, the better. Keep some for yourself and your family, and give the rest as sadaqah. More on it here.
  3. Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) was so strong mashaAllah! Imagine slaughtering seven camels in one go. :O
It takes a lot of strength! You'd know if you've seen a camel being slaughtered. If not, YouTube/Google it.

Slaughtering Place (Manhar) of the Prophet [sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam] (Ahadith 1468 - 1469)

Bismillah.
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 768:
Narrated Nafi':
'Abdullah (bin 'Umar) (radiallaahu `anhu), used to slaughter (his sacrifice) at the Manhar. ('Ubaidullah, a sub-narrator said, "The Manhar of Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam).")

Volume 2, Book 26, Number 769:
Narrated Nafi':
Ibn 'Umar (radiallaahu `anhu) used to send his Hadi from Jam' (to Mina) in the last third of the night with the pilgrims amongst whom there were free men and slaves, till it was taken into the Manhar (slaughtering place) of the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam).
Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) slaughtered his sacrificial animals in Mina. That's where his 'manhar' was.

Hajj - Slaughtering on Behalf of Others (Hadith No. 1467)

Bismillah.
Hadith no. 1466 (below) is a repeat. Read it here.
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 766:
Narrated Nafi':
Ibn 'Umar (radiallaahu `anhu) intended to perform Hajj in the year of the Hajj of Al-Harawriya during the rule of Ibn Az-Zubair. Some people said to him, "It is very likely that there will be a fight among the people, and we are afraid that they might prevent you (from performing Hajj)." He replied, "Verily, in Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) there is a good example for you (to follow). In this case I would do the same as he had done. I make you witness that I have intended to perform 'Umra." When he reached Al-Baida', he said, "The conditions for both Hajj and 'Umra are the same. I make you witness that I have intended to perform Hajj along with 'Umra." After that he took a garlanded Hadi (to Mecca) which he bought (on the way). When he reached (Mecca), he performed Tawaf of the Ka'ba and of Safa (and Marwa) and did not do more than that. He did not make legal for himself the things which were illegal for a Muhrim till it was the Day of Nahr (sacrifice), when he had his head shaved and slaughtered (the sacrifice) and considered sufficient his first Tawaf (between Safa and Marwa), as a (Sa'i) for his Hajj and 'Umra both. He then said, "The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) used to do like that."

Today's Hadith:

Volume 2, Book 26, Number 767:
Narrated 'Amra bint 'AbdurRahman:
I heard 'Aisha (radiallaahu `anhaa) saying, "Five days before the end of Dhul-Qa'ada we set out from Medina in the company of Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) with the intention of performing Hajj only. When we approached Mecca, Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) ordered those who had no Hadi with them to finish their lhram after performing Tawaf of the Ka'ba and (Sa'i) and between Safa and Marwa." 'Aisha (radiallaahu `anhaa) added, "On the day of Nahr (slaughtering of sacrifice) beef was brought to us. I asked, 'What is this?' The reply was, 'Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) has slaughtered (sacrifices) on behalf of his wives.' "
Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) slaughtered the animals (hadiy) on behalf of his wives. Does it apply on wives only or can one slaughter the hadiy on behalf of anyone? I'll update this post once I have the answer inshaAllah.

Hajj - Animal of Sacrifice to be Brought from Outside Haram (Hadith No. 1451)

Bismillah.
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 751:
Narrated Nafi':
'Abdullah (bin 'Abdullah) bin 'Umar said to his father, "Stay here, for I am afraid that it (affliction between Ibn Zubair and Al-Hajjaj) might prevent you from reaching the Ka'ba." Ibn 'Umar (radiallaahu `anhu) said, "(In this case) I would do the same as Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) did, and Allah has said, 'Verily, in Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam), you have a good example (to follow).' So, I make you, people, witness that I have made 'Umra compulsory for me." So he assumed lhram for 'Umra. Then he went out and when he reached Al-Baida', he assumed Ihram for Hajj and 'Umra (together) and said, "The conditions (requisites) of Hajj and 'Umra are the same." He, then brought a Hadi from Qudaid. Then he arrived (at Mecca) and performed Tawaf (between Safa and Marwa) once for both Hajj and 'Umra and did not finish the lhram till he had finished both Hajj and 'Umra.
A similar Hadith has been covered before. Read it here.
According to the commentator Ibn Battaal, Imaam Bukhari mentioned this Hadith here in order to show the opinion of Ibn `Umar (radiallaahu `anhu) concerning the hadi (animal of sacrifice). He used to say that the hadi has to be bought/brought from outside of the boundaries of haram. And in later posts, we'll see that it must be sacrificed inside haram.

It is not Sunnah if you have done ‘Umrah to buy a sheep and slaughter it; the Sunnah is to bring a sheep with you from your country or at least from the miqaat or the closest point outside the sanctuary, according to some scholars, and this is called driving the hadiy. But offering a sacrifice after ‘Umrah without having brought the animal with you is not part of the Sunnah. End quote.

Hajj - Ridin' the Animal of Sacrifice (Ahadith 1448 - 1449)

Bismillah.
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 748:
Narrated Abu Huraira (radiallaahu `anhu):
Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) saw a man driving his Badana (sacrificial camel). He said, "Ride on it." The man said, "It is a Badana." The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, "Ride on it." He (the man) said, "It is a Badana." The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, "Ride on it." And on the second or the third time he (the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam)) added, "Woe to you."

Volume 2, Book 26, Number 749:
Narrated Anas (radiallaahu `anhu):
The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) saw a man driving a Badana. He said, "Ride on it." The man replied, "It is a Badana." The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said (again), "Ride on it." He (the man) said, "It is a Badana." The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said thrice, "Ride on it."
What do you say to a person who doesn't listen to you even when you give him an instruction three times? Answer: woe to you! (It has various interesting translations in Urdu btw.) :P
Coming to the point, one may ride the animal he/she is going to use as hadi (sacrificial animal for Hajj). There are certain conditions as to the minimum age of the animal. In Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daa’imah, it says:
The shar’i evidence indicates that what is acceptable in the case of sheep is that which has reached the age of six months; in the case of goats it is that which has reached the age of one year; in the case of cattle it is that which has reached the age of two years; and in the case of camels it is that which has reached the age of five years. Anything younger than that is not acceptable as a hadiy or udhiyah. This is what is meant by “a Hady such as you can afford,” because the texts from the Qur'aan and Sunnah explain one another.
And Allah is the source of strength; may Allah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and Companions. End quote.

Levels of Charity (Hadith No. 1183)

Bismillah.
Volume 2, Book 24, Number 524:
Narrated Abu Burda:
from his father from his grandfather that the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, "Every Muslim has to give in charity." The people asked, "O Allah's Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam)! If someone has nothing to give, what will he do?" He said, "He should work with his hands and benefit himself and also give in charity (from what he earns)." The people further asked, "If he cannot find even that?" He replied, "He should help the needy who appeal for help." Then the people asked, "If he cannot do that?" He replied, "Then he should perform good deeds and keep away from evil deeds and this will be regarded as charitable deeds."
Charity (Zakah) is binding on all Muslims. No matter what condition one is in, he has to give Zakah. If it's wealth, a share of that. If it's health, a share of that (by working with his hands and earning). If neither, helping others. If none of these, then staying away from evil deeds. Doing tazkiyah (purification) of one's self.
If you notice, all these levels require sacrifice. Giving up something or the other for the better. Like it's a trait that should be found in every Muslim. General behavior. By default. The Muslim is giving and sacrificing for his own benefit as well as the benefit of the society.
Giving wealth earns him reward and regulates money in the society. Giving up sins requires avoiding temptation, but it purifies his nafs and saves the society from bigger evils at the same time.
So we have to train ourselves. Being Muslims, we have to be giving as well. We have to sacrifice. Whatever the need may be. It's expected of us. Start by doing Sadaqah, by doing healthy physical activities, by helping others and by doing good deeds and staying away from bad ones. Start by denying yourself. Start by self-restraint.

Types of Hajj (Hadith No. 890)

Assalamu`alaykum,
Bismillah.
Volume 2, Book 20, Number 191:
Narrated Ibn Abbas:
The Prophet and his companions reached Mecca in the morning of the 4th Dhul-Hijja reciting Talbiya (O Allah! We are obedient to Your orders, we respond to Your call) intending to perform Hajj. The Prophet ordered his companions to assume the lhram for Umra instead of Hajj, excepting those who had Hadi (sacrifice) with them.
Prophet (SAW) stayed in Makkah for 10 days for Hajj, according to Hadith no. 187.
Why did Prophet (SAW) ordered some people to assume Ihraam for Umrah instead of Hajj? Background information on Hajj needed.

There are three types of Hajj: Tamattu’, Ifraad and Qiraan.

Tamattu’ means entering ihraam for ‘Umrah only during the months of Hajj (the months of Hajj are Shawwaal, Dhu’l-Qi’dah and Dhu’l-Hijjah; see al-Sharh al-Mumti’, 7/62). When the pilgrim reaches Makkah he performs tawaaf and saa’i for ‘Umrah, and shaves his head or cuts his hair, and exits ihraam. Then when the day of al-Tarwiyah, which is the 8th of Dhu’l-Hijjah, comes, he enters ihraam for Hajj only, and does all the actions of Hajj. So Tamattu’ involves a complete ‘Umrah and a complete Hajj.

Ifraad means entering ihraam for Hajj only. When the pilgrim reaches Makkah he performs tawaaf al-qudoom (tawaaf of arrival) and saa’i for Hajj, but he does not shave or cut his hair and does not exit ihraam, rather he remains in ihraam until he exits ihraam after stoning Jamarat al-‘Aqabah on the day of Eid.  If he delays the saa’i of Hajj until after the tawaaf of Hajj, there is nothing wrong with that.

Qiraan means entering ihraam for ‘Umrah and Hajj both together. Or entering ihraam for ‘Umrah first then including Hajj in that before starting the tawaaf of Hajj. That is done by intending that his tawaaf and saa’i will be for both Hajj and ‘Umrah.
The actions done in Qiraan are the same as those done in Ifraad, except that the pilgrim doing Qiraan has to offer a hadiy (sacrifice) whereas the pilgrim doing Ifraad does not.

The best of these three types of Hajj is Tamattu’. This is what the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) enjoined upon his companions and urged them to do. Even if a person enters ihraam for Qiraan or Ifraad, then it is strongly recommended for him to change his intention to ‘Umrah, then complete ‘Umrah and exit ihraam, so that he will then be doing Tamattu’. He may do that after doing tawaaf al-qudoom and saa’i  – because when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did tawaaf and saa’i during his Farewell Pilgrimage, and his companions were with him, he told everyone who did not have a sacrificial animal (hadiy) to change his intention and make his ihraam for ‘Umrah and to cut his hair and exit ihraam, and he said, “Were it not that I have brought the hadiy with me, I would do what I have commanded you to do.”

So, the ones who had brought animals along for sacrifice were doing Qiraan, and the rest were ordered to intend for Tamattu`.
Wassalam.

Eid-ul-Adha - Sacrifice (Ahadith 772 - 773)

Assalamu`alaykum,
Bismillah.

Volume 2, Book 15, Number 772:
Narrated Anas:
The Prophet said, "Whoever slaughtered (his sacrifice) before the 'Id prayer, should slaughter again." A man stood up and said, "This is the day on which one has desire for meat," and he mentioned something about his neighbors. It seemed that the Prophet believed him. Then the same man added, "I have a young she-goat which is dearer to me than the meat of two sheep." The Prophet permitted him to slaughter it as a sacrifice. I do not know whether that permission was valid only for him or for others as well.

Next Hadith will explain the incident better..

Volume 2, Book 15, Number 773:
Narrated Al-Bara' bin 'Azib:
The Prophet delivered the Khutba after offering the prayer on the Day of Nahr and said, "Whoever offers the prayer like us and slaughters like us then his Nusuk (sacrifice) will be accepted by Allah. And whoever slaughters his sacrifice before the 'Id prayer then he has not done the sacrifice." Abi Burda bin Niyar, the uncle of Al-Bara' said, "O Allah's Apostle! I have slaughtered my sheep before the 'Id prayer and I thought today as a day of eating and drinking (not alcoholic drinks), and I liked that my sheep should be the first to be slaughtered in my house. So slaughtered my sheep and took my food before coming for the prayer." The Prophet said, "The sheep which you have slaughtered is just mutton (not a Nusuk)." He (Abu Burda) said, "O Allah's Apostle! I have a young she-goat which is dearer to me than two sheep. Will that be sufficient as a Nusuk on my behalf? "The Prophet (p.b.u.h) said, "Yes, it will be sufficient for you but it will not be sufficient (as a Nusuk) for anyone else after you."
Don't eat anything before Eid prayer on Eid-ul-Adha (if you're offering the sacrifice on the first day). But it is Sunnah to eat dates in an odd number on Eid-ul-Fitr.
..But on Eid al-Adha it is mustahabb not to eat anything until one comes back from the prayer, so he should eat from the udhiyah if he has offered a sacrifice. If he is not going to offer a sacrifice there is nothing wrong with eating before the prayer.
[IslamQA]
Eid al-Adhaa is the tenth day of Dhoo’l-Hijjah, the last (twelfth) month of the Hijri or Islamic calendar. It is, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “The greatest day in the sight of Allaah, may He be blessed and exalted, the Day of Sacrifice . . .” (Reported by Abu Dawud; see also Saheeh al-Jaami‘, 1064).
It is also the greatest day of Hajj, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) told us. (Reported by al-Tirmidhi, see Saheeh al-Jaami‘, 8191).
The reason why it is described as the greatest day of the year is that it combines so many acts of worship which are not combined on any other day, such as the Eid prayer, offering the sacrifice, reciting Takbeer (glorifying Allaah), and widespread remembrance of Allaah. For the pilgrims in Makkah, it also includes offering a sacrifice, stoning the pillars representing Shaytaan (the devil), shaving the head (for men only; women merely cut a little off their hair), and performing Tawaaf (circumambulation of the Ka‘bah) and Sa‘ee (running between the two hills of Safaa and Marwa).
Why sacrifice? We all know the story of Ibrahim (AS), but do we really know the spirit of sacrifice? Is it just the meat we eat and distribute among family, friends, neighbors and the poor, or is there something more to it? Here's one unbelievably awesome video that should explain it all:

Wassalam.

hmm ... What we talk on eid day

A:"EID MUBARAAAAAK!"

B:"Khair Mubaraaak! Eid Mubarak to you toooo!"

A:"Where did you pray the Eid Salah?"

B:"I prayed at Faisal Mosque, at 8:30 am!"

A:"Wah! What a beautiful Bakra! Its meat will be very tasty! Don't forget to send me some!"

B:"The meat better be good! I bought it for Rs. 30,000!"

A:"Man! Now a days Bakras are too expensive! Where did you buy it from?"
Blah, blah, blah...

Doesn't the above conversation sound familiar? Isn't this all we talk about at Eid?
Not even a single thing about Allah or the spirit behind the sacrifice!
Are the Price, the size and looks of the animal and Meat all that we do the Sacrifice for?

Whereas Allah says:

"It is not their meat nor their blood, that reaches God: it is your piety that reaches Him: He has thus made them subject to you, that ye may glorify God for His Guidance to you and proclaim the good news to all who do right."
(Al-Hajj 22:36-37)

I just realized this problem this Eid, even in me, and a very dear brother corrected me very politely and started talking about the essence of sacrificing and what it should remind us of!

First lets see how Allah azzawajal narrates the incident!

"So We gave him the glad tidings of a forbearing boy. And, when he (his son) was old enough to walk with him, he said: "O my son! I have seen in a dream that I am slaughtering you (offer you in sacrifice to Allâh), so look what you think!" He said: "O my father! Do that which you are commanded, Inshâ' Allâh (if Allâh will), you shall find me of As-Sâbirun (the patient)." Then, when they had both submitted themselves (to the Will of Allâh), and he had laid him prostrate on his forehead (or on the side of his forehead for slaughtering); And We called out to him: "O Abraham! You have fulfilled the dream!" Verily! thus do We reward the Muhsinûn. Verily, that indeed was a manifest trial. And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice (i.e. کبش - a ram); And We left for him (a goodly remembrance) among the later generations. Salâmun (peace) be upon Ibrâhim (Abraham)!" Thus indeed do We reward the Muhsinûn. Verily, he was one of Our believing slaves."
(As-Saffaat 37:101-110)

As we can see, Allah again and again reminds us of the tests Prophet Ibrahim (as) was put to, and he kept on succeeding in each and everyone of them to the point that he (as) was even willing to sacrifice his beloved son in order to please Allah! SubhanAllah!
This is what this ritual should remind us of and make us realize the reality of this life, and also that of the Hereafter! This ritual should increase us in Taqwa of Allah and give us the strength of Emaan to sacrifice the rest of our desires that take us away from Allah.

So our small talks this Eid, inshaAllah, should not be on the meat or how much we bough the animal for! Because that doesn't matter the least bit in the eyes of Allah, what matters is the Taqwa with which we do the sacrifice, if any! So we should take this opportunity to remind each other the essence of this sacrifice and revive the Sunnah of Ibrahim (as) in its true spirit!

Allah is the All-Knower. All good is from Allah and mistakes are from myself.

What Else Will You Sacrifice During This Eid ?

Every year during Eidul Ad'ha, there is a common complain.." This year the goats are very expensive." But if you count the price rise index of other things you will notice that every thing has gone dearer than last year and not only goats. Petrol in Mumbai has got dearer by 20 percent as compared to last year and along with petrol, everything that is associated with transportation gets expensive. Eid is a festival of sacrifice so if you are buying a sacrificial animal then you are sacrificing more than last year. But there are many other things we need to sacrifice besides Goat..let us consider a few things.

Those who have cut off their relations due to petty reasons should sacrifce their egoes and make amendments with his warrying brother, as the Hadith says..one who  is more beloved to Allah will get the tuofiq of greeting first.

Those who are in the habits of buying expensive unwanted electronic gadgets like branded mobiles and leather items, should sacrifice their habits ofbeing extravagance.

Those who are obsessed by violent and obscene entertainment via TV and Movies should discard their Haram entertainments. That is also a sacrifice of your desire.

Those who are into buying expensive unbranded goats and post their pictures in media for a show off should also sacrifice their attitude of Riyaa (show off )as the Qur'an says.. Your blood and meat does not reach Allah but your taqwa reaches..Indicating that all the expensive things need not be  precious in the sight of Allah.

Those who are into sacrificing innocent Muslims through bomblasts in the cities of Muslim cities should abstaiin from their extremism and observe Patience as the Qur'an says..it is indeed a big thing to observe patience...

Those who are dishonouring Muslims in their private talks and public talks should also abstain from gheebat as it is counted as eating the meat of their dead brothers and during Eid, the meat of animal is tastier than the meat of your dead brother through gheebah and slandering.

Those children who are entertaining themselves and others by indulging their goats in goat fights to show people how strong their goats are.. should realise that they are not only putting themselves  but also their goats into sin. Yes I am right...The famous sahih hadith says..On the day of Qiyamah a goat with horn who had hurt another goat without horn will be brought and justice willbe done to the goat without horn by giving it a pair of horns so that it can take its revenge...It means those people who entertain others through goat fights will be also sinning and also those elders who watch it and enjoy it..

Those who cant wake up for fajr should sacrifice their desire to sleep and get into the mode of praying fajr at fajr only and not along wiht zohar.

Finally make a point ot sacrifice your valuable time and get into some type of social service to serve people and sacrifice your laziness and try to remember Allah as much as possible during these days..
