Ramadan - Paradise Open & Hell Closed (Ahadith 1617 - 1618)

Bismillah.
Volume 3, Book 31, Number 122:
Narrated Abu Huraira (radiallaahu `anhu):
Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, "When Ramadan begins, the gates of Paradise are opened."
Volume 3, Book 31, Number 123:
Narrated Abu Huraira (radiallaahu `anhu):
Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, "When the month of Ramadan starts, the gates of the heaven are opened and the gates of Hell are closed and the devils are chained."
Opening of the gates of Paradise means that the way to Paradise and its attainment is made easier through deeds like praying, fasting and reciting Quran etc. Similarly, closing of the gates of Hell means that the way to Hell is made tougher by making it easier to leave sins - chaining of the devils helps in both scenarios, since they're not around to whisper in our hearts and encourage us to commit bad deeds.
Alhamdulillah for Ramadan and its blessings. May Allah make us all come out of it sinless. Ameen.

Bismillah.
Volume 2, Book 24, Number 492:
Narrated Haritha bin Wahab :
I heard the Prophet saying, "O people! Give in charity as a time will come upon you when a person will wander about with his object of charity and will not find anybody to accept it, and one (who will be requested to take it) will say, "If you had brought it yesterday, would have taken it, but today I am not in need of it."
Volume 2, Book 24, Number 493:
Narrated Abu Huraira:
The Prophet said, "The Hour (Day of Judgment) will not be established till your wealth increases so much so that one will be worried, for no one will accept his Zakat and the person to whom he will give it will reply, 'I am not in need of it.' "
Prophet (SAW) warned of a time that'll come which will be a time of abundance in wealth [and that did happen in `Umar (RA)'s caliphate]. He (SAW) insisted that we give sadaqah from our wealth, be it little, before we don't find anyone in need of it.
You might think that's not the case today. Plenty of poor people we find around us whom we can help out by charity. But really, these Ahadith insist on not ignoring the opportunity when it comes knocking. One day it's there, and the next day it isn't. The opportunity that Allah provided you with to earn reward by doing little won't stay long. And it might happen that the opportunity stays, but you're no longer there. Get it?
Be smart. Do Sadaqah. NOW!
Volume 2, Book 24, Number 494:
Narrated 'Adi bin Hatim:
While I was sitting with Allah's Apostle (p.b.u.h) two person came to him; one of them complained about his poverty and the other complained about the prevalence of robberies. Allah's Apostle said, "As regards stealing and robberies, there will shortly come a time when a caravan will go to Mecca (from Medina) without any guard. And regarding poverty, The Hour (Day of Judgment) will not be established till one of you wanders about with his object of charity and will not find anybody to accept it And (no doubt) each one of you will stand in front of Allah and there will be neither a curtain nor an interpreter between him and Allah, and Allah will ask him, 'Did not I give you wealth?' He will reply in the affirmative. Allah will further ask, 'Didn't I send a messenger to you?' And again that person will reply in the affirmative Then he will look to his right and he will see nothing but Hell-fire, and then he will look to his left and will see nothing but Hell-fire. And so, any (each one) of you should save himself from the fire even by giving half of a date-fruit (in charity). And if you do not find a half date-fruit, then (you can do it through saying) a good pleasant word (to your brethren). (See Hadith No. 793 Vol. 4).
Bottom line: sadaqah saves from the Fire. So save yourselves. Do Sadaqah. NOW!
Volume 2, Book 24, Number 495:
Narrated Abu Musa:
Thy Prophet (p.b.u.h) said, "A time will come upon the people when a person will wander about with gold as Zakat and will not find anybody to accept it, and one man will be seen followed by forty women to be their guardian because of scarcity of men and great number of women. "
Note that you're not required to spend great amounts of money as sadaqah. Be it as little as half a date or as much as gold worth Mount Uhad, 'giving' counts. Sincerity of intentions counts.
So won't you do something about it? Won't you get up right now and do sadaqah? At least make the intention of doing it later! Because I can't stress more on the point that you need to do sadaqah. NOW!
Ah, here's a nice idea. Make a Sadaqah Jar!
Keep collecting money in it and spend when opportunity knocks. Involve family members in this little activity so you can get the reward for their sadaqah as well. ;)

Don't Abuse the Dead (Hadith No. 1175)


Bismillah.
Narrated 'Aisha :
The Prophet (p.b.u.h) said, "Don't abuse the dead, because they have reached the result of what they forwarded."
Abusing here refers to verbal abuse, using harsh words against a person.
Most scholars say that this is for the believers, i.e. don't abuse the dead believers. But anyhow, taking the hukm (commandment) of the Prophet (SAW), one must be careful as to not talk bad about any dead person, especially the believers.
This also implies not judging them, i.e. not deciding where they ended up. Because. We. Don't. Know.
No matter how pious you knew the person to be, you are not allowed to say (even about a martyr) that he/she definitely went to Jannah, or in the case of a wicked one, that he/she definitely went to Hell.
Prophet (SAW) said:

والله ما أدرى وأنا رسول الله ما يفعل بى

[roughly translated:] By Allah, I do not know what will be done with me, even though I'm the Messenger of Allah.
If Prophet (SAW) wasn't so sure, how can we claim to know about a person's fate? Do we have angels coming to us as reporters? :)

Allah's Witnesses on Earth (Ahadith 1147 - 1148)


Bismillah.
Narrated 'Umar bin Al-Khattab :
When 'Abdullah bin Ubai bin Salul died, Allah's Apostle (p.b.u.h) was called upon to offer his funeral prayer. When Allah's Apostle stood up to offer the prayer, I got up quickly and said, "O Allah's Apostle! Are you going to pray for Ibn Ubai and he said so and so on such and such occasions?" And started mentioning all that he had said. Allah's Apostle smiled and said, "O 'Umar! Go away from me." When I talked too much he said, "I have been given the choice and so I have chosen (to offer the prayer). Had I known that he would be forgiven by asking for Allah's forgiveness for more than seventy times, surely I would have done so." ('Umar added): Allah's Apostle offered his funeral prayer and returned and after a short while the two verses of Surat Bara' were revealed: i.e. "And never (O Muhammad) pray for any of them who dies . . . (to the end of the verse) rebellion (9.84)" -- ('Umar added), "Later I astonished at my daring before Allah's Apostle on that day. And Allah and His Apostle know better."

Allah's Witnesses on Earth..

Narrated Anas bin Malik, :
A funeral procession passed and the people praised the deceased. The Prophet said, "It has been affirmed to him." Then another funeral procession passed and the people spoke badly of the deceased. The Prophet said, "It has been affirmed to him". 'Umar bin Al-Khattab asked (Allah's Apostle (p.b.u.h) ), "What has been affirmed?" He replied, "You praised this, so Paradise has been affirmed to him; and you spoke badly of this, so Hell has been affirmed to him. You people are Allah's witnesses on earth."
Narrated Abu Al-Aswad:
I came to Medina when an epidemic had broken out. While I was sitting with 'Umar bin Al-Khattab a funeral procession passed by and the people praised the deceased. 'Umar said, "It has been affirmed to him." And another funeral procession passed by and the people praised the deceased. 'Umar said, "It has been affirmed to him." A third (funeral procession) passed by and the people spoke badly of the deceased. He said, "It has been affirmed to him." I (Abu Al-Aswad) asked, "O chief of the believers! What has been affirmed?" He replied, "I said the same as the Prophet had said, that is: if four persons testify the piety of a Muslim, Allah will grant him Paradise." We asked, "If three persons testify his piety?" He (the Prophet) replied, "Even three." Then we asked, "If two?" He replied, "Even two." We did not ask him regarding one witness.
Isn't that scary? Turns out that it does matter what people have to say about you. Do good deeds, be good to others, so that people have only good things to say about you after your death. Imagine if just two people spoke bad about you. *shivers at the thought* O_O
Look at it another way. If someone you know dies, and he/she was a good person, you should mention about their goodness among people. Your witness will be important in their case with Allah. But be careful about exaggeration. Speak only the truth.
Say the person wasn't good. Say he was a sinner or had bad relationships with people. Would you talk bad about them? Would you want to play a role in their entering Hell? It's better to leave the matter to Allah. So mum's the word.

The Key to Paradise (Ahadith 1028 - 1029)


Bismillah.

Kitaab-ul-Janaa'iz [Book of Funerals] starts today.

Volume 2, Book 23, Number 329:
Narrated Abu Dhar:
Allah's Apostle said, "Someone came to me from my Lord and gave me the news (or good tidings) that if any of my followers dies worshipping none (in any way) along with Allah, he will enter Paradise." I asked, "Even if he committed illegal sexual intercourse (adultery) and theft?" He replied, "Even if he committed illegal sexual intercourse (adultery) and theft."
Volume 2, Book 23, Number 330:
Narrated 'Abdullah:
Allah's Apostle said, "Anyone who dies worshipping others along with Allah will definitely enter the Fire." I said, "Anyone who dies worshipping none along with Allah will definitely enter Paradise."
Small yet profound statements. It is important to understand them fully.
Key to Paradise = la ilaha illa Allah. No doubt in that. But there's a condition: one must die on this kalimah (phrase/sentence), meaning he should believe in it till he dies.
Let's look at different scenarios.
Case I:
Dies a Muslim (insert proper definition of Muslim here, i.e. one who submits his will to Allah) with no major sins.
Destination: Paradise.

الَّذِينَ يَجْتَنِبُونَ كَبَائِرَ الْإِثْمِ وَالْفَوَاحِشَ إِلَّا اللَّمَمَ ۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ وَاسِعُ الْمَغْفِرَةِ

"Those who avoid great sins (See the Qur'an, Verses: 6:152,153) and Al-Fawahish (illegal sexual intercourse) except the small faults, - verily, your Lord is of Vast Forgiveness." [An-Najm: 32]
BUT, must go through this for explanation.
Case II:
Dies a disbeliever/mushrik (polytheist).
Destination: Hell-fire.

إن الله لا يغفر أن يشرك به ويغفر ما دون ذلك لمن يشاء 

"Verily, Allah forgives not that partners should be set up with Him (in worship), but He forgives except that (anything else) to whom He wills.." [An-Nisaa': 48]
Case III:
Dies a Muslim with major sins (after repentance).
Destination: Paradise.
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
If a person repents from sin, Allah will forgive him, whether it was shirk or otherwise, as He says (interpretation of the meaning):
“Say: O ‘Ibaadi (My slaves) who have transgressed against themselves (by committing evil deeds and sins)! Despair not of the Mercy of Allaah, verily, Allaah forgives all sins. Truly, He is Oft‑Forgiving, Most Merciful”
[al-Zumar 39:53]. 
Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
If a person repents sincerely, his previous bad deeds will be erased and the reward for his good deeds will be restored for him.
End quote from al-Waabil as-Sayyib, p. 12 
Case IV:
Dies a Muslim with major sins (without repentance).
Destination: Unknown.
As for Case IV, scholars have given different opinions. You can go through detailed discussions here and here. But here's the gist: Allah knows best. He'll judge. Let's leave it on Him. :)

Tahajjud: Savior! (Hadith No. 921)


Assalamu`alaykum,
Bismillah.

Volume 2, Book 21, Number 222:
Narrated Salim's father:
In the life-time of the Prophet whosoever saw a dream would narrate it to Allah's Apostle. I had a wish of seeing a dream to narrate it to Allah's Apostle (p.b.u.h) I was a grown-up boy and used to sleep in the Mosque in the life-time of the Prophet. I saw in the dream that two angels caught hold of me and took me to the Fire which was built all round like a built well and had two poles in it and the people in it were known to me. I started saying, "I seek refuge with Allah from the Fire." Then I met another angel who told me not to be afraid. I narrated the dream to Hafsa who told it to Allah's Apostle. The Prophet said, "Abdullah is a good man. I wish he prayed Tahajjud." After that 'Abdullah (i.e. Salim's father) used to sleep but a little at night.

Abdullah ibn `Umar was a very pious man. Prophet (SAW) didn't find anything lacking in him in terms of Deen and `ibadaat etc. That he used to fulfill his fara'id in a good manner. But he did not pray Tahajjud. So he (SAW) said "Abdullah is a good man. I wish he prayed Tahajjud". Relate this to the dream he had, and we can easily draw the conclusion that Tahajjud will save a person from the Fire.
Allah-ul-Musta`aan!

This Hadith points out the excellence of `Abdullah ibn `Umar (RA) as well as the merits of Qiyam-ul-Layl (Tahajjud). It also tells us that it is permissible to praise someone in his presence if one is sure that he will not become proud due to that praise. Another aspect of this Hadith is that it induces one to wish for others' welfare and happiness.
Jabir (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) saying,
Every night there is a special time during which whatever a Muslim asks Allah of any good relating to this life or the Hereafter, it will be granted to him; and this moment comes every night.
[Muslim]
Ask Allah for protection against the Fire at that time, if nothing else. Allah talks about the "Slaves of the Compassionate" in the Qur'an:

وَالَّذِينَ يَبِيتُونَ لِرَبِّهِمْ سُجَّدًا وَقِيَامًا
وَالَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَا اصْرِفْ عَنَّا عَذَابَ جَهَنَّمَ ۖ إِنَّ عَذَابَهَا كَانَ غَرَامًا
إِنَّهَا سَاءَتْ مُسْتَقَرًّا وَمُقَامًا 

And those who spend the night in worship of their Lord, prostrate and standing.
And those who say: "Our Lord! Avert from us the torment of Hell. Verily its torment is ever an inseparable, permanent punishment."
Evil indeed it (Hell) is as an abode and as a place to rest in.

Women! (Hadith No. 860)


Assalamu`alaykum,
Bismillah.

Volume 2, Book 18, Number 859:
Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Amr
When the sun eclipsed in the lifetime of Allah's Apostle and an announcement was made that the prayer was to be held in congregation. The Prophet performed two bowing in one Raka. Then he stood up and performed two bowing in one Raka. Then he sat down and finished the prayer; and by then the (eclipse) had cleared 'Aisha said, "I had never performed such a long prostration."

Volume 2, Book 18, Number 860:
Narrated 'Abdullah bin Abbas:
The sun eclipsed in the life-time of the Prophet (p.b.u.h) . Allah's Apostle offered the eclipse prayer and stood for a long period equal to the period in which one could recite Surat-al-Baqara. Then he bowed for a long time and then stood up for a long period which was shorter than that of the first standing, then bowed again for a long time but for a shorter period than the first; then he prostrated twice and then stood up for a long period which was shorter than that of the first standing; then he bowed for a long time which was shorter than the previous one, and then he raised his head and stood up for a long period which was shorter than the first standing, then he bowed for a long time which was shorter than the first bowing, and then prostrated (twice) and finished the prayer. By then, the sun (eclipse) had cleared. The Prophet then said, "The sun and the moon are two of the signs of Allah. They eclipse neither because of the death of somebody nor because of his life (i.e. birth). So when you see them, remember Allah." The people said, "O Allah's Apostle! We saw you taking something from your place and then we saw you retreating." The Prophet replied, "I saw Paradise and stretched my hands towards a bunch (of its fruits) and had I taken it, you would have eaten from it as long as the world remains. I also saw the Hell-fire and I had never seen such a horrible sight. I saw that most of the inhabitants were women." The people asked, "O Allah's Apostle! Why is it so?" The Prophet replied, "Because of their ungratefulness." It was asked whether they are ungrateful to Allah. The Prophet said, "They are ungrateful to their companions of life (husbands) and ungrateful to good deeds. If you are benevolent to one of them throughout the life and if she sees anything (undesirable) in you, she will say, 'I have never had any good from you.' "

Women who are reading this:
  1. Must take this seriously.
    If Prophet (SAW) said he saw more women in Hell, then that's the way it is.
  2. Y U NO GRATEFUL?
    Stop whining and start appreciating things for what they are.
  3. Don't EVER say this to your husband (or anyone for the matter): "I have never had any good from you".
    Seriously. Ruins everything.
Women are awesome, okay? We just need a little bit of guidance and reminders. Everybody does.
Don't stop being a woman. Just stop being the type described in the Hadith. Surely we don't want to add to the numbers of women in Hell. May Allah protect us from it!

Extraordinary Dust (Hadith No. 728)


Assalamu`alaykum,
Bismillah.

Volume 2, Book 13, Number 728:
Narrated Abu 'Abs:
I heard the Prophet saying, "Anyone whose feet are covered with dust in Allah's cause, shall be saved by Allah from the Hell-Fire."

Because you're lucky to even walk towards that (Cause's) path. Because that dust is more than just ordinary earth. Because everything related to Allah's Cause gets an upgrade automatically. Because it can save you from Hell-Fire. Because.. Sigh.

Not stars.
I found this definition of "Allah's Cause" somewhere. It's not official or anything, I just found it interesting, so:
Everything that protects and preserves and propagates Islam and Muslims in every way by any Halal method is Allah's Cause.
And this is something you might like.

One of the BEST Ahadith so far! (Hadith No. 770)

Bismillah.
This is the kind of Hadith that makes you cry and smile at the same time. I absolutely love it. [I just saw the hearts and stars that I drew around it in my physical Bukhari back when I was studying it in a course. Such love!]

Volume 1, Book 12, Number 770:
Narrated Abu Huraira:
The people said, "O Allah's Apostle! Shall we see our Lord on the Day of Resurrection?" He replied, "Do you have any doubt in seeing the full moon on a clear (not cloudy) night?" They replied, "No, O Allah's Apostle!" He said, "Do you have any doubt in seeing the sun when there are no clouds?" They replied in the negative. He said, "You will see Allah (your Lord) in the same way. On the Day of Resurrection, people will be gathered and He will order the people to follow what they used to worship. So some of them will follow the sun, some will follow the moon, and some will follow other deities; and only this nation (Muslims) will be left with its hypocrites. Allah will come to them and say, 'I am Your Lord.' They will say, 'We shall stay in this place till our Lord comes to us and when our Lord will come, we will recognize Him. Then Allah will come to them again and say, 'I am your Lord.' They will say, 'You are our Lord.' Allah will call them, and As-Sirat (a bridge) will be laid across Hell and I (Muhammad) shall be the first amongst the Apostles to cross it with my followers. Nobody except the Apostles will then be able to speak and they will be saying then, 'O Allah! Save us. O Allah! Save us.'

There will be hooks like the thorns of Sa'dan in Hell. Have you seen the thorns of Sa'dan?" The people said, "Yes." He said, "These hooks will be like the thorns of Sa'dan but nobody except Allah knows their greatness in size and these will entangle the people according to their deeds; some of them will fall and stay in Hell forever; others will receive punishment (torn into small pieces) and will get out of Hell, till when Allah intends mercy on whomever He likes amongst the people of Hell, He will order the angels to take out of Hell those who worshipped none but Him alone. The angels will take them out by recognizing them from the traces of prostrations, for Allah has forbidden the (Hell) fire to eat away those traces. So they will come out of the Fire, it will eat away from the whole of the human body except the marks of the prostrations. At that time they will come out of the Fire as mere skeletons. The Water of Life will be poured on them and as a result they will grow like the seeds growing on the bank of flowing water. Then when Allah had finished from the Judgments amongst his creations, one man will be left between Hell and Paradise and he will be the last man from the people of Hell to enter paradise. He will be facing Hell, and will say, 'O Allah! Turn my face from the fire as its wind has dried me and its steam has burnt me.' Allah will ask him, "Will you ask for anything more in case this favor is granted to you?' He will say, "No by Your (Honor) Power!" And he will give to his Lord (Allah) what he will of the pledges and the covenants. Allah will then turn his face from the Fire. When he will face Paradise and will see its charm, he will remain quiet as long as Allah will. He then will say, 'O my Lord! Let me go to the gate of Paradise.' Allah will ask him, 'Didn't you give pledges and make covenants (to the effect) that you would not ask for anything more than what you requested at first?' He will say, 'O my Lord! Do not make me the most wretched, amongst Your creatures.' Allah will say, 'If this request is granted, will you then ask for anything else?' He will say, 'No! By Your Power! I shall not ask for anything else.' Then he will give to his Lord what He will of the pledges and the covenants. Allah will then let him go to the gate of Paradise. On reaching then and seeing its life, charm, and pleasure, he will remain quiet as long as Allah wills and then will say, 'O my Lord ! Let me enter Paradise.' Allah will say, May Allah be merciful unto you, O son of Adam! How treacherous you are! Haven't you made covenants and given pledges that you will not ask for anything more than what you have been given?' He will say, 'O my Lord! Do not make me the most wretched amongst Your creatures.' So Allah will laugh and allow him to enter Paradise and will ask him to request as much as he likes. He will do so till all his desires have been fulfilled . Then Allah will say, 'Request more of such and such things.' Allah will remind him and when all his desires and wishes; have been fulfilled, Allah will say "All this is granted to you and a similar amount besides." Abu Said Al-Khudri, said to Abu Huraira, 'Allah's Apostle said, "Allah will say, 'That is for you and ten times more like it.' "Abu Huraira said, "I do not remember from Allah's Apostle except (his saying), 'All this is granted to you and a similar amount besides." Abu Sahd said, "I heard him saying, 'That is for you and ten times more the like of it."

 I'm speechless here. Word-less, actually. Shall one wonder about the beauty of the moment when Allah will show Himself; or seek His protection against the horror of the Day of Judgement; or crave for the immense Mercy of Allah (SWT) that He blesses His slaves with; or ask of His Bounty and Pleasure in this life and the hereafter?
All of the above, I guess? (Duh!)

A Glimpse of Paradise and Hell (Hadith No. 712)

Bismillah.

Volume 1, Book 12, Number 712:
Narrated Asma' bint Abi Bakr:
The Prophet once offered the eclipse prayer. He stood for a long time and then did a prolonged bowing. He stood up straight again and kept on standing for a long time, then bowed a long bowing and then stood up straight and then prostrated a prolonged prostration and then lifted his head and prostrated a prolonged prostration. And then he stood up for a long time and then did a prolonged bowing and then stood up straight again and kept on standing for a long time. Then he bowed a long bowing and then stood up straight and then prostrated a prolonged prostration and then lifted his head and went for a prolonged prostration. On completion of the prayer, he said, "Paradise became so near to me that if I had dared, I would have plucked one of its bunches for you, and Hell became so near to me that said, 'O my Lord will I be among those people?' Then suddenly I saw a woman and a cat was lacerating her with its claws. On inquiring, it was said that the woman had imprisoned the cat till it died of starvation and she neither fed it no freed it so that it could feed itself."
