Some people make a great deal of du’aa’ but receive no answer

Praise be to Allaah.

Firstly:

The one to whom that happens should believe that there is a reason and great wisdom behind the delay in the response. Allaah, may He be glorified, is the Sovereign of all and none can put back His bounty or overturn His ruling or object to His giving or His withholding, if He gives by His bounty or withholds by His justice. We are His slaves and He does with us whatever He will.

“And your Lord creates whatsoever He wills and chooses, no choice have they (in any matter)”

[al-Qasas 28:68]

How can a slave fall short in honouring his master’s rights and then demand his rights in full?

It is His right to be obeyed and not disobeyed, to be remembered and not forgotten, to be thanked and not to be shown ingratitude. If you look at yourself and how you are carrying out your duties, you would think very little of yourself and you would feel humility and would realize there can be no salvation except by His forgiveness and mercy. So look at yourself as being a slave, for Allaah is the Creator and Controller.

Secondly:

Allaah has great wisdom and He does not give or withhold except for a reason. You may look at something and think that it is good but by His wisdom He does not decree it. A doctor may do things which appear to be painful but they are in the patient’s best interests. And for Allaah is the highest description. (cf. al-Nahl 16:60).

Thirdly:

Attainting the thing asked for may cause hardship to the one who is asking. It was narrated from one of the salaf that he used to ask Allaah to let him go out on a military campaign, but a voice called out to him: “If you go on a military campaign you will be taken prisoner, and if you are taken prisoner, you will become a Christian.” Sayd al-Khaatir, 1/109

Ibn al-Qayyim said: Whatever Allaah has decreed for His believing slave is a blessing even if that is in the form of withholding; it is a favour even if that is in the form of a trial, and the calamity decreed by him is fair even if it us painful. Madaarij al-Saalikeen, 4/215.

No one knows how his affairs will end up. He may ask for something which leads to bad consequences, and may even harm him. The Controller knows best what is in his best interests. “and it may be that you dislike a thing which is good for you” [al-Baqarah 2:216]. One of the meanings of this verse is that we should not wish that the decree of our Lord was different or ask Him for things of which we have no knowledge, for perhaps that may harm us without us knowing. So we should not choose anything different than what our Lord has chosen for us, rather we should ask Him for a good end in what He has chosen for us, for there is nothing more beneficial for us than that.

Fourthly:

What Allaah chooses for His slave is better for him that what he chooses for himself. Allaah is more merciful towards His slaves than they themselves or their mothers are. If something happens to them that they dislike, that is better for them than if it did not happen, so His decree is all kindness and mercy. If the slave submits to Allaah and has certain faith that all dominion belongs to Allaah and all things are under His command, and that He is more merciful to him than he is himself, then he will find peace of mind regardless of whether his need is met or not.

See Madaarij al-Saalikeen, 2/215

Fifthly:

The response may be delayed because the person himself has done something which is an impediment to receiving a response or a cause of delay. Perhaps there is something haraam in his food, or perhaps there was some negligence in his heart at the time when he made the du’aa’, or perhaps he had committed a sin, as a consequence of which his du’aa’ was not answered. So when the response to the du’aa’ is delayed, this may prompt the person to check on himself and examine how he stands before his Lord, so that he will take stock of himself and repent; if the answer to his prayer came sooner, perhaps he would become heedless and think that he was doing fine, then he would develop a sense of self-admiration that may lead to his doom.

Delay or withholding of a response may be because Allaah wants to delay the reward for him until the Day of Resurrection, or Allaah wants to divert an equivalent evil from him, but he does not realize that.

Whatever the case, the fruits of du’aa’ are guaranteed, even if you do not see the response with your own eyes. So think well of your Lord and say: Perhaps He has answered me in a way that I do not know. It is narrated in a saheeh report that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “There is no Muslim who does not offer any du’aa’ in which there is no sin or severing of family ties but Allaah will give him one of three things in return: either He will answer his du’aa’ sooner, or he will store it up for him in the Hereafter, or He will divert an equivalent evil away from him because of it.” They said: “We will say a lot of du’aa’.” He said: “Allaah is more generous.” Narrated by Ahmad, 10749. al-Albaani said in Saheeh al-Targheeb wa’l-Tarheeb: it is hasan saheeh.

In conclusion, there are many reasons why a du’aa’ may not be answered or the answer may be delayed; we must ponder this and not stop making du’aa’, for du’aa’ will always be of benefit.

And Allaah knows best.

Case of sexually abused woman in absence of any witness

by Allama Ibtisam Elahi Zaheer,

It is an obligatory duty of every Muslim to respect other Muslim and must not take any step to defame harass and insult him.According to the sayings of Rasool salal laho aliehi wasalam the respect and integrity of Muslim and his blood is more sacred than city of Makkah and Day of Hajj.It is also not allowed for any Muslim man to harass Muslim woman. The only way to approach a strange Muslim woman in Islam is through Nikah.Islam has condemned Zina and has announced severe punishments for adulterer and adultress.Islam has demanded four witnesses against this crime so that no one can defame Muslim women.
Quran says:

And those who accuse chaste women, and produce not four witnesses, flog them with eighty stripes, and reject their testimony forever, they indeed are the Fâsiqûn (liars, rebellious, disobedient to Allâh). (An-Nur 24:4)

This verse clearly indicates that four witnesses are demanded so that innocent women are not defamed.
But in case where family unit is in danger and husband is eye witness of this crime than this condition of four witnesses is waived.
It has been mentioned in Quran:
And for those who accuse their wives, but have no witnesses except themselves, let the testimony of one of them be four testimonies (i.e. testifies four times) by Allâh that he is one of those who speak the truth. And the fifth (testimony) (should be) the invoking of the Curse of Allâh on him if he be of those who tell a lie (against her). (An-Nur 24:6-7)

But even in this critical situation Islam does not degrade Muslim woman and gives her full right of defence .
Quran says:

But it shall avert the punishment (of stoning to death) from her, if she bears witness four times by Allâh, that he (her husband) is telling a lie. And the fifth (testimony) should be that the Wrath of Allâh be upon her if he (her husband) speaks the truth. (An-Nur 24:8-9)

Now it is obvious that condition of four witnesses is to avoid any offense against innocents. But it should be kept in mind that Islam does not support crime and criminal in any case.
Allah swt says:
Surely! Allâh wrongs not even of the weight of an atom (or a small ant), but if there is any good (done), He doubles it, and gives from Him a great reward. (An-Nisa 4:40)

And any one who commits a crime he will have to face the penalty of his wrong doing.
Allah swt says:

Then whoever transgresses the prohibition against you, you transgress likewise against him. And fear Allâh, and know that Allâh is with Al-Muttaqûn (the pious - see V.2:2) . (Al-Baqarah 2:194)

And any one who is victimized has full right to raise voice against this victimization.
Allah swt says:
Allâh does not like that the evil should be uttered in public except by him who has been wronged. And Allâh is Ever All¬Hearer, All¬Knower. (An-Nisa 4:148)

This verse makes it clear that any one who has been victimized has full right to raise voice publically and Allah swt has delegated this right to the oppressed one.

Now coming to the point if a girl is accusing a person and she has no witness with her there are two probabilities.
1) She is innocent and has been victimized
2) She is criminal and accusing an innocent person

In both cases there should be transparent judicial investigation and DNA and other techniques can be used to probe the case.If the person who has been accused admits during free judicial inquiry that he has committed the crime than there is no dispute that he should be lashed with 100 lashes in case he is bachelor and will be stoned to death if he is married person. But if he does not admit that he was guilty but is proved guilty by DNA or other means he may be punished on discretion of Judge .This punishment may be decided by keeping in view the intensity of crime and if it reaches to the extent of haraba which means severe attack and physical abuse than it can be even death penalty.
However if the person is innocent than that woman should be punished with 80 lashes due to attempt of qadaf which has been mentioned earlier:

And those who accuse chaste women, and produce not four witnesses, flog them with eighty stripes, and reject their testimony forever, they indeed are the Fâsiqûn (liars, rebellious, disobedient to Allâh). (An-Nur 24:4)

Islam preserves the human rights and does not support any crime and oppression against humanity. So if a woman does not find four witnesses she does not need to be worried and she is allowed to fight her case and if it is proved by free and fair judicial trial that man was guilty than he will be given severe punishment and dealt according to Islamic law.May Allah guide us to right path ameen.

AL-ISRA’ AND Al-MI‘RAJ (The Miraculous Night Journey from Makkah to the Farthest Mosque in Jerusalem, and the Ascent through the Spheres of Heavens)

The last days of the Makkan phase of the Prophet’s life are noted for alternate fortunes ranging between two extremes: gradual success and continual persecution. However, glimpses of propitious lights were looming on the distant horizon, to ultimately materialize in the event of the Prophet’s Night Journey to Jerusalem and then Ascension through the spheres of the heavens.

As for its exact date, it is still controversial and no common consent has been reached. However, the majority of jurists is in favour of a date between 16-12 months prior to migration to Madinah. The following is a epitome of the details of that miraculous event narrated on the authority of Ibn Al-Qayyim.[Za'd Al-Ma'ad 2/49; Tareekh-e-Islam 1/124; Rahmat-al-lil'alameen 1/76]

The Messenger of Allâh [pbuh] was carried in body from the Sacred Mosque in Makkah to the Distant Mosque in Jerusalem on a horse called Al-Buraq in the company of Gabriel, the archangel. There he alighted, tethered the horse to a ring in the gate of the Mosque and led the Prophets in prayer. After that Gabriel took him to the heavens on the same horse. When they reached the first heaven Gabriel asked the guardian angel to open the door of heaven. It was opened and he saw Adam, the progenitor of mankind. The Prophet [pbuh] saluted him and the other welcomed him and expressed his faith in Muhammad’s Prophethood. He saw the souls of martyrs on his right and those of the wretched on his left.

Gabriel then ascended with the Prophet to the second heaven, asked for opening the gate and there he saw and saluted John, son of Zachariya (Yahya bin Zakariya) and Jesus, son of Mary. They returned the salutation, welcomed him and expressed their faith in his Prophethood. Then they reached the third heaven where they saw Joseph (Yusuf) and saluted him. The latter welcomed the Prophet and expressed faith in his Prophethood. The Prophet, in the company of Gabriel, then reached the fourth heaven where he met the Prophet Enoch (Idris) and saluted him. Prophet Enoch returned the salutation and expressed faith in his Prophethood. Then he was carried to the fifth heaven where he met the Prophet Aaron (Harun) and saluted him. The latter returned the salutation and expressed faith in his Prophethood. In the sixth heaven he met Moses (Musa) and saluted him. The latter returned the salutation and expressed faith in his Prophethood. Muhammad [pbuh] on leaving, saw that Moses began to weep. He asked about the reason. Moses answered that he was weeping because he witnessed a man sent after him as a Messenger (Muhammad) who was able to lead more of his people to the Paradise than he himself did. Then Prophet Muhammad [pbuh] reached the seventh heaven and met Abraham (Ibrahim)[AWS] and saluted him. The latter returned the salutation and expressed faith in his Prophethood. Then he was carried to Sidrat-al-Muntaha (the remotest lote tree) and was shown Al-Bait-al-Ma‘mûr [(the much frequented house) which is like the Ka‘bah (Sacred House) encompassed daily by seventy thousand angels, so that the angels who once encompassed it would not have their turn again till the Resurrection]. He was then presented to the Divine Presence and experienced the thrill of witnessing the Divine Glory and Manifestation at the closest possible propinquity. There the Lord revealed unto His servant that which He revealed, and ordained fifty daily prayers for him. On his return, he spoke to Moses that his followers had been enjoined to pray fifty times a day. Moses addressing the Prophet [pbuh] said: "Your followers cannot perform so many prayers. Go back to your Lord and ask for a remission in number." The Prophet [pbuh] turned to Gabriel as if holding counsel with him. Gabriel nodded, "Yes, if you desire," and ascended with him to the Presence of Allâh. The All-Mighty Allâh, Glory is to Him, made a reduction of ten prayers. He then descended and reported that to Moses, who again urged him to request for a further reduction. Muhammad [pbuh] once more begged his Lord to reduce the number still further. He went again and again in the Presence of Allâh at the suggestion of Moses for reduction in the number of prayers till these were reduced to five only. Moses again asked him to implore for more reduction, but he said: "I feel ashamed now of repeatedly asking my Lord for reduction. I accept and resign to His Will." When Muhammad [pbuh] went farther, a Caller was heard saying: "I have imposed My Ordinance and alleviated the burden of My servants."

There is however some difference as regards the issue whether the Prophet saw Allâh with his physical eye or not. Some interpreters say that seeing Allâh with his naked eyes was not confirmed. Ibn ‘Abbas, on the other hand, says that the word Ru’ya as used in the Noble Qur’ân signifies the observation with the help of the eye.

In Sûrah An–Najm (Chapter —The Star) we read:

"Then he approached and came closer." [Al-Qur'an 53:8]

Here (he) refers to archangel Gabriel, and this context is completely different from that in the Prophetic tradition of Isra’ and Mi‘raj, where ‘the approach’ relates to that of the Lord, Glory is to Him.

Some significant suggestive incidents featured the ‘Night Journey’ of the Prophet, of which we could mention:

1. The Prophet’s breast was cleft by Gabriel, his heart extracted and washed with the water of Zamzam —a sacred spring in Makkah.

2. In the same context, there were brought to him two gold vessels. There was milk in one, while the other was full of wine. He was asked to choose either of them, so he selected the vessel containing milk and drank it. He (the angel) said: "You have been guided on Al-Fitrah or you have attained Al-Fitrah. Had you selected wine, your nation would have been misled." [It is a symbolic way of saying that good and evil in the form of milk and wine were brought before the Prophet and he instinctively made a choice for the good. It is very difficult to render the Arabic term ‘Fitrah’ into English. It denotes the original constitution or disposition, with which a child comes into this world, as contrasted with qualities or inclinations acquired during life; besides it refers to the spiritual inclination inherent in man in his unspoilt state].

3. The Prophet [pbuh] told that he saw two manifest rivers, — the Nile and the Euphrates — and two hidden ones. It appears that the two manifest rivers, the Nile and the Euphrates, symbolically describe the area in whose fertile valleys, Muhammad’s Message will settle, and the people whereof will always remain the adherent bearers of Islam that will be passed on from generation to another. They can by no means suggest that they well up from the Garden.

4. He had the opportunity to see Malik, the guardian of Hell, with a cheerless frowning face. Therein, he saw the Hell dwellers, of whom were those who unjustly eat up the property of the orphans. They have flews similar to those of camels, swallowing red-hot stones and then issuing out of their backs. There were also the people who take usury with bellies too big to be able to move around; they are trodden by the people of Pharaoh when these are admitted into Hell. In the same abode, he saw the adulterers offered tasty fatty meat and rotten smelly one but they make option for the latter. The licentious women were also there hanging from their breasts.

5. The ‘Night Journey’ raised a good deal of stir among the people and the sceptical audience plied Muhammad with all sorts of questions. He told them that he saw the camels of Makkan merchants to and fro. He also guided them to some of their animals that went astray. He informed them that he had drunk some of their water while they were fast asleep and left the container covered.

The disbelievers, however, found it a suitable opportunity to jeer at the Muslims and their creed. They pestered the Prophet [pbuh] with questions as to the description of the Mosque at Jerusalem, where he had never gone before and, to the astonishment of many, the Prophet’s replies furnished the most accurate information about that city. He supplied them with all the news about their caravans and the routes of their camels. However, all this increased in them nothing but flight from the Truth, and they accepted nothing but disbelief.

For the true Muslims, however there was nothing unusual about the Night Journey. The All-Mighty Allâh, Who is Powerful enough to have created the heavens and the earth by an act of His Will, is surely Powerful enough to take His Messenger beyond the heavens and show him those signs of His at firsthand which are inaccessible to man otherwise. The disbelievers on their part went to see Abu Bakr on account of this event, and he readily said: "Yes, I do verify it." It was on this occasion that he earned the title of As-Siddiq (the verifier of the truth). [Ibn Hisham 1/399]

The most eloquent and most concise justification of this ‘Journey’ is expressed in Allâh’s Words:

"... in order that We might show him (Muhammad) of Our Ayât (proofs, evidences, signs, etc.)"
[Al-Qur'an 17:1].

The Divine rules as regards the Prophets goes as follows:

"Thus did We show Abraham the kingdom of the heavens and the earth that he be one of those who have Faith with certainty." [Al-Qur'an 6:75]

To Moses, his Lord said:

"That We may show you (some) of Our Greater Signs." [Al-Qur'an 20:23]

In order that:

"He be of those who have Faith with certainty."

The Prophets, after seeing Allâh’s Signs, will establish their Faith on solid certainty too immune to be parted with. They are in fact eligible for this Divine privilege because they are the ones who will bear burdens too heavy for other ordinary people to carry, and in the process of their mission, they will regard all worldly ordeals and agonies too small to care about.

There are simple facts that emanate from this blessed Journey, and flow along into the flowery garden of the Prophetic biography; peace and blessings of Allâh be upon its author, Muhammad. The story of ‘the Night Journey’ as we see in the Noble Qur’ân is epitomised in the first verse of the Sûrah Isra’(Chapter 17 — The Journey by Night) then there is a quick shift to uncover the shameful deeds and crimes of the Jews, followed by an admonition saying that the Qur’ân guides to that which is most just and right. This arrangement is not in fact a mere coincidence. Jerusalem was the first scene of the Night Journey, and here lies the message directed to the Jews and which explicitly suggested that they would be discharged of the office of leadership of mankind due to the crimes they had perpetrated and which no longer justified their occupation of that office. The message suggested explicitly that the office of leadership would be reinstituted by the Messenger of Allâh [pbuh] to hold in his hand both headquarters of the Abrahamic Faith, the Holy Sanctuary in Makkah and the Farthest Mosque in Jerusalem. It was high time for the spiritual authority to be transferred from a nation whose history got pregnant with treachery, covenant-breaching and aggression to another nation blessed with piety, and dutifulness to Allâh, with a Messenger who enjoys the privilege of the Qur’ânic Revelation, which leads to that which is best and right.

There, however, remains a crucial question waiting to be answered: How could this foreseen transition of authority be effected while the champion himself (Muhammad) was left deserted and forsaken stumbling in the hillocks of Makkah? This question per se uncovered the secrets of another issue which referred to a phase of the Islamic Call and the appearance of another role it was about to take up, different in its course and noble in its approaches. The forerunners of that new task took the shape of Qur’ânic verses smacking of direct and unequivocal warning accompanied by a severe ultimatum directed to the polytheists and their agents:

"And when We decide to destroy a town (population), We (first) send a definite order (to obey Allâh and be righteous) to those among them [ or We (first) increase in number those of its population] who are given the good things of this life. Then, they transgress therein, and thus the word (of torment) is justified against it (them). Then We destroy it with complete destruction. And how many generations (past nations) have We destroyed after Noah! And Sufficient is your Lord as an All-Knower and All-Beholder of the sins of His slaves." [Al-Qur'an 17:16, 17]

Together with these verses, there were others revealed to show the Muslims the rules and items of the civilization upon which they could erect their Muslim community, and foreshadowing their ownership of a piece of land, exercising full freedom over it and establishing a coherent society around whose axis the whole humanity would rotate. Those verses in reality implied better prospects for the Prophet [pbuh] comprising a secure shelter to settle in, and headquarters safe enough to empower and embolden him to communicate his Message to all the world at large; that was in fact the inner secret of that blessed journey. For this very wisdom and the like we deem it appropriate to suggest that ‘the Night Journey’ took place either before the First Pledge of ‘Aqabah or between the two; after all, Allâh knows best.

Ruling on celebrating the night of the twenty-seventh of Rajab

What is the ruling on Celebrating the night of the Isra’ and Mi’raaj, which is the twenty-seventh night of Rajab?.

 Praise be to Allaah.

There is no doubt that the Isra’ and Mi’raaj (the Prophet’s Night Journey and Ascent into heaven) are two great signs of Allaah which point to the truthfulness of the His Messenger Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), and the greatness of his status before Allaah. They are also signs of the great power of Allaah, and of His exalted position above His creation.

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Glorified (and Exalted) be He (Allaah) [above all that (evil) they associate with Him] Who took His slave (Muhammad) for a journey by night from Al‑Masjid Al‑Haraam (at Makkah) to Al‑Masjid Al‑Aqsa (in Jerusalem), the neighbourhood whereof We have blessed, in order that We might show him (Muhammad) of Our Ayaat (proofs, evidences, lessons, signs, etc.). Verily, He is the All‑Hearer, the All‑Seer”

[al-Isra’ 17:1]

There are mutawaatir reports from the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) that he was taken up into the heavens, and their gates were opened for him, until he passed beyond the seventh heaven, where his Lord spoke to him as He willed, and enjoined the five daily prayers upon him. At first Allaah, may He be exalted, enjoined fifty prayers, but our Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) kept going back and asking Him to reduce it, until He made them five, so they are five obligatory prayers but fifty in reward, because each good deed is rewarded tenfold. To Allaah be praise and thanks for all His blessings.

With regard to this night on which the Isra’ and Mi’raaj took place, there is nothing in the saheeh ahaadeeth to indicate that it is in Rajab or in any other month. Everything that has been narrated concerning a specific date for these events cannot be proven to have come from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) according to the scholars of hadeeth. Allaah has wise reasons for causing the people to forget it.

Even if the date were proven, it would not be permissible for the Muslims to single it out for particular acts of worship, and it is not permissible for them to celebrate it, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and his companions (may Allaah be pleased with them) did not celebrate it and they did not single it out in any way.

If celebrating it was something that is prescribed in Islam, the Messenger would have told his ummah about that, either in word or in deed. If any such thing had happened, it would have been well known, and his companions would have transmitted the information to us. They narrated from their Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) everything that his ummah needs to know, and they did not neglect any aspect of the religion, rather they were the first ones to do anything good. If celebrating this night had been prescribed in Islam, they would have been the first people to do so.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was the most sincere of people, and he conveyed the message to the people in full, and he fulfilled the trust. If venerating and celebrating this night were part of the religion of Allaah, then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) would have done that and would not have concealed it. Since no such thing happened, it is known that celebrating it and venerating it is not part of Islam at all. Allaah has perfected this ummah’s religion for it and has completed His favour upon them, and He condemns those who introduce things into the religion which Allaah has not ordained.

Allaah says in His holy Book, in Soorat al-Maa’idah (interpretation of the meaning):

“This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion”

 [al-Maa’idah 5:3]

And Allaah says in Soorat al-Shoora (interpretation of the meaning):

“Or have they partners with Allaah (false gods) who have instituted for them a religion which Allaah has not ordained?”

 [al-Shoora 42:21]

In the saheeh ahaadeeth it is proven that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) warned against bid’ah (innovation) and stated clearly that it is misguidance, so as to show the ummah how serious the matter is and put them off it.

For example, it is narrated in al-Saheehayn from ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

Whoever introduces anything into this matter of ours that is not part of it will have it rejected.

In a report narrated by Muslim it says:

Whoever does any action that is not part of this matter of ours will have it rejected.”

In Saheeh Muslim it is narrated that Jaabir (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to say in his khutbah on Friday:

“The best of speech is the Book of Allaah and the best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). The worst of matters are those which are newly-invented, and every innovation is a going astray.

Al-Nasaa’i added with a jayyid isnaad:

and every going astray will be in the Fire.”

In al-Sunan it is narrated that al-‘Irbaad ibn Saariyah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) delivered an eloquent speech to us which melted our hearts and caused our eyes to flow with tears. We said: O Messenger of Allaah, it is as if it is a farewell address, so advise us. He said:

“I advise you to fear Allaah, and to listen and obey, even if a slave is appointed over you. Whoever among you lives will see many differences, so I urge you to adhere to my Sunnah and the way of the rightly-guided caliphs who will come after me, and cling firmly to it. Beware of newly-invented matters, for every newly-invented matter is an innovation and every innovation is a going astray."

And there are many ahaadeeth with a similar meaning.

Warnings against bid’ah (innovation) have been narrated from the companions of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and from the righteous salaf after them, because this is no more than adding things to the religion and instituting a religion that Allaah has not ordained, and it is an imitation of the enemies of Allaah, the Jews and the Christians, in their additions to their religions and introducing into them things that Allaah had not ordained. It also implies that there is something lacking in Islam, and that it is not complete, and it is well known that this leads to great mischief and evil, and goes against the verse in which

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion”

 [al-Maa’idah 5:3]

It also goes against the ahaadeeth of the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) which warn against innovation (bid’ah).

I hope that the evidence we have quoted will be sufficient to convince the seeker of truth that this bid’ah is wrong, i.e., the innovation of celebrating the night of the Isra’ and Mi’raaj, and that it is not part of the religion of Islam at all.

Because Allaah has enjoined being sincere towards the Muslims and explaining what Allaah has prescribed for them in their religion, and because it is haraam to conceal knowledge, I thought that I should point out this innovation, which is so widespread in many regions that people think it is part of the religion, to my Muslim brothers. Allaah is the One Whom we ask to set the affairs of all the Muslims straight, and to bless them with knowledge of Islam, and to help us and them to adhere steadfastly to the truth, and to forsake everything that goes against it, for He is able to do that. May Allaah send blessings and peace upon His slave and Messenger, our Prophet Muhammad, and his family and companions.

Shaykh ‘Abd al-‘Azeez ibn Baaz (may Allaah have mercy on him).

Marriage Fiqh: A sister cannot be married against wife [as Mehar] (Shighar is not permitted)

In some tribal areas of Indo pak, Afghanistan and Arabia, some times a sister is married with brother of wife without paying mehar this is known as Nikah of Shighar.

This is a very bad tradition and it increases the chances of divorce and domestic voilence. Rasool salal laho aliehi waslam has banned it.

Now a man cannot marry her sister or daughter with his brother in law without mehar. He can however marry her with his brother in law without setting any link of this marriage with his own marriage.

Marriage Fiqh: Temporary marriage or Mutah is not allowed in Islam:

There is no concept of temporary marriage in Islam. It has been mentioned in many hadiths of Rasool salal laho aliehi wasalam.
Some of them are as follows:

"Rabi' b. Sabra reported that his father went on an expedition with Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) during the Victory of Mecca, and we stayed there for fifteen days (i. e. for thirteen full days and a day and a night), and Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) permitted us to contract temporary marriage with women. So I and another person of my tribe went out, and I was more handsome than he, whereas he was almost ugly. Each one of us had a cloaks, My cloak was worn out, whereas the cloak of my cousin was quite new. As we reached the lower or the upper side of Mecca, we came across a young woman like a young smart long-necked she-camel. We said: Is it possible that one of us may contract temporary marriage with you? She said: What will you give me as a dower? Each one of us spread his cloak. She began to cast a glance on both the persons. My companion also looked at her when she was casting a glance at her side and he said: This cloak of his is worn out, whereas my cloak is quite new. She, however, said twice or thrice: There is no harm in (accepting) this cloak (the old one). So I contracted temporary marriage with her, and I did not come out (of this) until Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) declared it forbidden. (Sahih Muslim, Book 8, Number 3253)

Narrated 'Ali: "I said to Ibn 'Abbas, 'During the battle of Khaibar the Prophet forbade (Nikah) Al-Mut'a [Temporary Marriage in English] and the eating of donkey's meat.' (Sahih Bukhari, Wedlock, Marriage (Nikaah), Volume 7, Book 62, Number 50)

Narrated Jabir bin 'Abdullah and Salama bin Al-Akwa': "While we were in an army, Allah's Apostle came to us and said, "You have been allowed to do the Mut'a (marriage), so do it." Salama bin Al-Akwa' said: Allah's Apostle's said, "If a man and a woman agree (to marry temporarily), their marriage should last for three nights, and if they like to continue, they can do so; and if they want to separate, they can do so." I do not know whether that was only for us or for all the people in general. Abu Abdullah (Al-Bukhari) said: 'Ali made it clear that the Prophet said, "The Mut'a marriage has been cancelled (made unlawful)." (Sahih Bukhari, Wedlock, Marriage (Nikaah), Volume 7, Book 62, Number 52)"

Narrated Saburah ibn Ma'bad al-Juhani: "The Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) prohibited temporary marriage with women. (Sunan Abu-Dawud, Marriage (Kitab Al-Nikah), Book 11, Number 2068)"

From all the above mentioned hadiths it is clear that temporary marriages were declared haram by Rasool salal laho aliehi wasalam. And although they were initially halal but this cannot be an evidence for their permission because when prophet salal laho aliehi wasalam had declared it haram and cancelled its previous permission how can it be legal now.?

Marriage Fiqh: There is no harm in Polygamy:

It is allowed for Muslim men that they can have more than 1 wives and they can marry upto four provided that they do justice with all of them.Allah swt says in Holy Quran:

Marry women of your choice, two or three, or four but if you fear that you shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one or (the captives and the slaves) that your right hands possess. That is nearer to prevent you from doing injustice. (An-Nisa 4:3)

Justice is an obligation on Muslim men and they will be accountable before Allah swt if they do injustice .But this has to be kept in mind that Quantitative justice is more important than qualitative justice which means a man must try to distribute his resources and time equally among his wives but if he has more love for one among them he will not be accountable for it.

Allah swt says in Holy Quran:

You will never be able to do perfect justice between wives even if it is your ardent desire, so do not incline too much to one of them (by giving her more of your time and provision) so as to leave the other hanging (i.e. neither divorced nor married). And if you do justice, and do all that is right and fear Allâh by keeping away from all that is wrong, then Allâh is Ever Oft¬Forgiving, Most Merciful. (An-Nisa 4:129)

Allah swt says in Holy Quran:

And if a woman fears cruelty or desertion on her husband's part, there is no sin on them both if they make terms of peace between themselves; and making peace is better. And human inner-selves are swayed by greed. But if you do good and keep away from evil, verily, Allâh is Ever Well¬Acquainted with what you do. (An-Nisa 4:128)

So the summary of above discussion is that a man can marry more than one woman provided that he does justice with all of them. And if he finds himself weak to do justice than he can look after only one to avoid wrath of Allah for doing injustice.

An important issue in this regard is that if one or more of the wives in polygamy surrender one or more of their rights with free will it is allowed for them.

Marriage Fiqh: Age is not an issue in Marriage:

In many different cultures age of bride and bride groom is taken as an important issue. Most of the cultures think that bride should not be too young .Similarly some people think that bride should not be elder than bridegroom. In Islam there is no such restriction.
Prophet salal laho aliehi wasalam married Khadija radi Allaha anha who was elder than her.He married Ayesha radi Allaha anha who was a young girl at time of marriage.Similarly Hazrat Sauda Radi Allahu anha belonged to age group of prophet salal laho aliehi wasalam.

The important issue is that bride should be physically and mentally mature.

Maturity is relative term which is achieved by different individuals at different ages.

HOW TO OVERCOME THE CHALLENGES OF THIS STUPID EDUCATION SYSTEM?

By Islamic Brothers [Mohammad Ali]

THE CHALLENGES OF THIS STUPID EDUCATION SYSTEM

I received the following sms from a friend:

"Yaar I'm tired. This MBBS has taken all my time and energy. I can't find time to even recite Qur'an with peace. I can't find time to learn du'as. I can't get time for exercise. Everyday i miss Fajr. the College has gone crazy. When i get free then i'm so tired that I just want to relax rather than doing all my Islamic works at that time. They teach us the teachings of non-Muslims. They keep us busy till late while they know that its useless.

These institutions are making us selfish. Today we compete over marks. Tomorrow we will do it over money. I put all my anger and frustration of this stupid system on family. MBBS put restrictions on my religion. Not being able to practice religion was making me severely upset. I hope and pray to Allah that I don't miss tomorrow's Fajr, Insha Allah. Let's see. When I miss Fajr then the day is terrible.

Now the above story of my friend is not just specified to MBBS. I know all whether doing A levels/Engineering or studying other fields are going through this problem. This is because our education system is designed in such a a manner to keep us intensely busy. So that "Work work money money" becomes our main moto. I myself have done Engineering and i know what kind of system we have. I absolutely came to the conclusion that one can never be a practicing Muslim (and practicing Muslim for me doesn't mean one who prays 5 times, thats just a normal Muslim) if he involves him/herself completely in this system.

SOLUTION TO THE CHALLENGES OF THIS STUPID EDUCATION SYSTEM?

Brother and Sister,

1/ Make Time table and remember in mind "Azaan" mean "go to masjid"

2/ Do work on daily basis and semester system and practical and thesis should be preferred over the Annual or end of course Exams.

3/ Dhikr of Allah and patience, Brother, whenever you are in trouble or mentally distributed or have free time then prefer Dhikr of Allah [i.e Quran., Tafsir and others]

4/ For entertainment do NOT go for Movies etc [haram stuff generally] or Tv But prefer to Study Classical History Books like History by Ibn Katheer and History of Caliph by Imam imam Suyuti etc. In Shaa Allah, while reading such history books you will get quality entertainment [i.e Masala in story of Kings, Drama in King and Scholars Talks and useful advises by Scholars and alot of Hadith, Fiqh knowledge as well]

5/ Do not miss Friday Sermon at all cost. Try to masjid where Imam is more knowledgeable or you are also to digest his words or you understand talk/lecture in friday sermon.

6/ Remember that you are studying to earn Halal and spend part of it in Charity and Jihad for welfare of Ummah.

7/ Be example for Others. [ be practicing Muslim so that others also become attracted to Islamic Way]

Marriage Fiqh: Who Muslim can Marry and Who Muslim can not Marry

Muslim man can marry women form people of scriptures:
Muslim men are allowed to marry Christian and Jew women provided that they are modest.
Allah says in Holy Quran:

(Lawful to you in marriage) are chaste women from the believers and chaste women from those who were given the Scripture (Jews and Christians) before your time, when you have given their due Mahr (bridal money given by the husband to his wife at the time of marriage), desiring chastity (i.e. taking them in legal wedlock) not committing illegal sexual intercourse, nor taking them as girl-friends. (Al-Ma'idah 5:5)

So it is clear from above verse that any muslim man can marry any Christian or Jew lady provided that target is not adultery and time passing
Muslim women cannot marry Non Muslim men:
On the other hand Muslim women are not allowed to marry with Non Muslim men.
Allah swt says in Holy Quran:
They are not lawful (wives) for the disbelievers nor are the disbelievers lawful (husbands) for them. (Al-Ma'idah 5:5)

So it is clear from the above verse that the provision of marrying with people of scriptures is only for Muslim men not for Muslim women
Muslims cannot marry polytheists other than people of scriptures:
Muslim men are not allowed to marry polytheist women other than those belonging to people of scriptures. It is illegal for both Muslim men and women to marry people who are polytheists like Hindus,Buddhists,Sikhs,Qadiyanis,Bhais,Babis etc.
Allah swt says:

And do not marry Al-Mushrikât (idolatresses, etc.) till they believe (worship Allâh Alone). And indeed a slave woman who believes is better than a (free) Mushrikah (idolatress, etc.), even though she pleases you. And give not (your daughters) in marriage to Al-Mushrikûn till they believe (in Allâh Alone) and verily, a believing slave is better than a (free) Mushrik (idolater, etc.), even though he pleases you. Those (Al-Mushrikûn) invite you to the Fire, but Allâh invites (you) to Paradise and Forgiveness by His Leave, and makes His Ayât (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) clear to mankind that they may remember. (Al-Baqarah 2:221)

So a Muslim man should marry a Muslim woman and Muslim woman should marry a Muslim man .However it is allowed for Muslim man that they can marry woman from people of scriptures provided that she is modest. This is a permission from Allah swt but even for Muslim man a Muslim woman is far better than a Non Muslim woman.

A Sound character Muslim should not marry a loose character Person:

Allah swt has always demanded strong character from His worshippers.Allah swt says in Holy Quran:
And He loves those who purify themselves(Al-Baqarah 2:222)

On another instance Allah swt says:

And Allâh loves those who make themselves clean and pure (At-Tawbah 9:108)

These verse clearly indicate the importance of neatness and strong character that is why Allah swt has forbidden Muslims to marry loose character people.

Allah swt says:
The adulterer marries not but an adulteress or a Mushrikah and the adulteress none marries her except an adulterer or a Muskrik(An-Nur 24:3)

On another instance Allah swt says:

Bad women are for bad Men and bad men are for bad women and good women are for good men and good men for good women(An-Nur 24:26)

So it is very much clear from above verses that a Muslim men and women must choose a strong character person as their life partner.

Marriage Fiqh: Mehar is an obligation

For an Islamic marriage mehar is very important.Mehar is like gift of marriage from bride groom to bride. It can be a big amount or just a small gift of gold or silver ornament.
Allah swt has said in Holy Quran:

And give them their Mahr according to what is reasonable; (An-Nisa 4:25)

A bride groom cannot take back his mehar from her bride except in case of commit open illegal sexual intercourse.
It has been declared in Holy Quran:
O you who believe! You are forbidden to inherit women against their will, and you should not treat them with harshness, that you may take away part of the Mahr you have given them, unless they commit open illegal sexual intercourse. And live with them honourably. (An-Nisa 4:19)

Any one who tries to take back haq mehar from his wife after marriage is indeed a sinner.

Allah swt says

But if you intend to replace a wife by another and you have given one of them a Cantar (of gold i.e. a great amount) as Mahr, take not the least bit of it back; would you take it wrongfully without a right and (with) a manifest sin? (An-Nisa 4:20).

Marriage Fiqh: At least two witnesses are required for Marriage/Nikah

For an Islamic Nikah at least two witnesses are also required .Rasool salal laho aliehi wasalam said
“There is no Nikah without wali and two just witnesses”(Darqutnee)

The purpose of this condition is that married couple should not be accused of adultery and if some body accuses them the witnesses can make sure that it is wrong accusation.

Marriage Fiqh: No requirement of wali for revert migrant Muslim woman

It is an important point to be noted that if a revert Muslim woman leaves her family she does not need permission of her walis. She can come straight to any Muslim family for marriage
Allah swt has said in Holy Quran:

O you who believe! When believing women come to you as emigrants, examine them, Allâh knows best as to their Faith, then if you ascertain that they are true believers, send them not back to the disbelievers, they are not lawful (wives) for the disbelievers nor are the disbelievers lawful (husbands) for them. But give the disbelievers that (amount of money) which they have spent [as their Mahr] to them. And there will be no sin on you to marry them if you have paid their Mahr to them. (Al-Mumtahinah 60:10)
So any new Muslim woman can marry Muslim man if he pays her mehar

Marriage Fiqh: Women cannot be forced for Nikah:

Indeed consent of wali is very important for Nikah but on the other hand women cannot be forced for marriage.Whenever a woman is forced for Nikah that Nikah is invalid and a woman can break the ties of Nikah.
The evidence to support this fact is same hadith of sahih Muslim:

“Ibn Abbas (ra) reported Allah’s Messenger as saying: A previously married woman (thaib) has more right to her person than her guardian. And a virgin should also be consulted, and her silence implies her consent.”( Sahih Muslim, in Kitab an-Nikah)

This hadith clearly indicates that neither previously married woman nor virgin can be forced by their guardians for Nikah.Similarly when father of Hazrat Khansa binte Hazam radi Allaha anha married her without her will she came to prophet salal laho aliehi wasalam with complaint.Prophet salal laho aliehi wasalam cancelled her Nikah.
It means for an appropriate Nikah there should be consensus between wali and women

Marriage Fiqh: Consent of Wali or Guardian is very important

Islam disapproves all those marriages which are being done without consent of Wali.

Allah swt has said in Holy Quran:

Wed them with the permission of their own folk (guardians, Auliyâ' or masters) (An-Nisa 4:25)

On another instance Allah swt says while addressing walis of women:
Arrange the marriage of the spouseless among you – [Qur'an 24:32]

Similarly there are many hadiths which highlights importance of wali. Some of them are as follows:

“Abu Musa (ra) reported that Allah’s Messenger said, ‘Marriage is not performed if (consent of the) guardian is not there.” ( Al-Tirmidhi, 1101; Abu Dawood, 2085; Ibn Maajah, 1881. Classed as saheeh by Shaykh al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi, 1/318)”

“Ayesha (raa) reported that Allah’s Messenger said, ‘If any woman marries without the consent of her guardian then her marriage is void. Her marriage is void. Her marriage is void. If he cohabits with her then for her is the dower as the man enjoyed her. And if her awliya disputes with each other then the ruler is the wali of the one who has no wali ” (Al-Tirmidhi, 1102; Abu Dawood, 2083; Ibn Maajah, 1879. Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Irwa’ al-Ghaleel, 1840)”

Saeed ibne Musayyib narrated that ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab (ra) said, ‘the woman does not get married off unless with the permission of her wali or permission of someone responsible good judgment or the sultan.’ ( Kanz ul ‘Ummal vol. 12 pg 530)

In case of virgin wali has domination on girl but in case of widowed or divorced the opinion of woman has domination on opinion of walis.

Allah says in Holy Quran about divorced women:

When they have fulfilled their term, there is no blame on you if they dispose of themselves in a just and reasonable manner. – [Qur’an 2:234]

Similarly there is hadith in sahih Muslim about previously married woman:

“Ibn Abbas (ra) reported Allah’s Messenger as saying: A previously married woman (thaib) has more right to her person than her guardian. And a virgin should also be consulted, and her silence implies her consent.”( Sahih Muslim, in Kitab-an-Nikah)

Marriage Fiqh: A man cannot marry his mehrams or cannot take two sisters in one Nikah:

Islam has declared some relations illegal for marriage and these relations are known as mehrams for women. A muslim man/woman should have knowledge of these relations.

Allah swt says in Holy Quran:

And marry not women whom your fathers married, except what has already passed; indeed it was shameful and most hateful, and an evil way. Forbidden to you (for marriage) are: your mothers, your daughters, your sisters, your father's sisters, your mother's sisters, your brother's daughters, your sister's daughters, your foster mother who gave you suck, your foster milk suckling sisters, your wives' mothers, your step daughters under your guardianship, born of your wives to whom you have gone in - but there is no sin on you if you have not gone in them (to marry their daughters), - the wives of your sons who (spring) from your own loins, and two sisters in wedlock at the same time, except for what has already passed; verily, Allâh is Oft¬Forgiving, Most Merciful. (An-Nisa 4:22-23)

And similarly Rasool salal laho aliehi wasalam has forbidden aunt and her niece in wedlock at the same time. All muslim men and women should well aware of these relations declared illegal for marriage by Allah and His Rasool salal laho aliehi wasalam

Importance of Marriage

By Allama Ibtisam Elahi Zaheer

The basic element or brick of human society is home.Home is based on legal marriage.Islam gives too much importance to institute of marriage. There are some important issues which must be taken into account by the families and couples who are going to start a new life.

Images of the blessings of the grave

Praise be to Allaah.

The evidence indicates that the believer will be blessed in his grave until the Hour begins, then he will move by the grace and mercy of Allaah to the blessings that will never cease or come to an end, which is the blessing of Paradise. May Allaah make us among its people.

These are some of the images of the blessings which are bestowed upon the believer in his grave:

1- His grave is furnished from Paradise for him

2- He is clothed in garments from Paradise.

3- A gate to Paradise is opened for him, and its breezes come to him, and he smells its fragrance and he feels delight in what he can see of its blessings.

4- His grave is made wide and spacious for him.

5- He is given the glad tidings of Allaah’s pleasure and Paradise. Hence he longs for the Hour to begin.

It was narrated that al-Bara’ ibn ‘Aazib said: “We went out with the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) for the funeral of a man from among the Ansaar. We came to the grave and when (the deceased) was placed in the lahd, the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) sat down and we sat around him, as if there were birds on our heads (i.e., quiet and still). In his hand he had a stick with which he was scratching the ground. Then he raised his head and said, “Seek refuge with Allaah from the torment of the grave”, two or three times. Then he said, “When the believing slave is about to depart this world and enter the Hereafter, there come down to him from heaven angels with white faces like the sun, and they sit around him as far as the eye can see. They bring with them shrouds from Paradise and perfumes from Paradise. Then the Angel of Death comes and sits by his head, and he says, ‘O good soul, come forth to forgiveness from Allaah and His pleasure.’ Then it comes out easily like a drop of water from the mouth of a waterskin. When he seizes it, they do not leave it in his hand for an instant before they take it and put it in that shroud with that perfume, and there comes from it a fragrance like the finest musk on the face of the earth. Then they ascend and they do not pass by any group of angels but they say, ‘Who is this good soul?’ and they say, ‘It is So and so the son of So and so, calling him by the best names by which he was known in this world, until they reach the lowest heaven. They ask for it to be opened to them and it is opened, and (the soul) is welcomed and accompanied to the next heaven by those who are closest to Allaah, until they reach the seventh heaven. Then Allaah says: ‘Record the book of My slave in ‘Illiyoon in the seventh heaven, and return him to the earth, for from it I created them, to it I will return them and from it I will bring them forth once again.’ So his soul is returned to his body and there come to him two angels who make him sit up and they say to him, ‘Who is your Lord?’ He says, ‘Allaah.’ They say, ‘What is your religion?’ He says, ‘My religion is Islam.’ They say, ‘Who is this man who was sent among you?’ He says, ‘He is the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).’ They say, ‘What did you do?’ He says, ‘I read the Book of Allaah and I believed in it.’ Then a voice calls out from heaven, ‘My slave has spoken the truth, so prepare for him a bed from Paradise and clothe him from Paradise, and open for him a gate to Paradise.’ Then there comes to him some of its fragrance, and his grave is made wide, as far as he can see. Then there comes to him a man with a handsome face and handsome clothes, and a good fragrance, who says, ‘Receive the glad tidings that will bring you joy this day.’ He says, ‘Who are you? Your face is a face which brings glad tidings.’ He says, ‘I am your righteous deeds.’ He says, ‘O Lord, hasten the Hour so that I may return to my family and my wealth.’…”

Narrated by Ahmad, 17803; Abu Dawood, 4753. Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Ahkaam al-Janaa’iz, p. 156

6- He will be happy when he sees what would have been his place in Hell, which Allaah has replaced for him with a place in Paradise.

Ahmad (10577) narrated that Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri said: I attended a funeral with the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “O people, this ummah will be tested in their graves. When a man is buried and his friends leave him, an angel with a hammer in his hand comes and sits by him and asks, ‘What do you say about this man?’ If he is a believer, he says, ‘I bear witness that there is no god but Allaah and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.’ He says, ‘You have spoken the truth.’ Then a door to Hell is opened for him and he says, ‘This would have been your place if you had disbelieved in your Lord, but because you believed, this is your place.’ Then a door to Paradise is opened for him and he wants to go there, but the angel says to him, ‘Calm down,’ and his grave is made wide and spacious for him. But if he is a kaafir or a hypocrite, (the angel) says to him, ‘What do you say about this man?’ He says, ‘I do not know, I heard the people saying something.’ The angel says, ‘You did not know and you did not follow those who knew and you were not guided.’ Then a door to Paradise is opened for him and he says, ‘This would have been your position if you had believed in your Lord. But because you disbelieved, Allaah has replaced it for you with this.’ Then a gate to Hell is opened for him, and he strikes him a blow with the hammer which is heard by all of Allaah’s creation apart from the two races (of mankind and the jinn).” Some of the people said, “O Messenger of Allaah, there is no one who would have an angel standing by him holding a hammer but he would dumbfounded.” The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Allaah will keep firm those who believe, with the word that stands firm.” [Ibraaheem 14:27 – interpretation of the meaning]

Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in his commentary on Kitaab al-Sunnah by Ibn Abi ‘Aasim, 865

7- He will sleep the sleep of a bridegroom

8- His grave will be illuminated for him

It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “When the deceased (or he said: any one of you) is buried, two black and blue angels, one of whom is called Munkar and the other Nakeer come to him. They say, ‘What did you say about this man?’ And he says what he used to say, that he is the slave of Allaah and His Messenger, ‘I bear witness that there is no god but Allaah and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.’ They say, ‘We knew that you would say this.’ Then his grave is expanded, seventy cubits wide, and it is filled with light. He says, ‘Let me go back to my family and tell them.’ They say, ‘Sleep like a bridegroom whom no one will wake but his most beloved,’ until Allaah raises him up. But if he was a hypocrite he says, ‘I heard the people saying something and I said likewise, I do not know.’ So they say, ‘We knew that you would say that.’ Then it is said to the earth, ‘Squeeze him,’ so it squeezes him until his ribs interlock. And he will remain like that, being tormented, until Allaah raises him up.”

Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 1071. Classed as saheeh by Shaykh al-Albaani in al-Silsilah al-Saheehah, 1391.

With regard to his sleep being likened to the sleep of a bridegroom, that is because he will be so happy and comfortable. Tuhfat al-Ahwadhi.

These are some of the blessings that the believer will enjoy in his grave. We ask Allaah to make us among His people.

And Allaah knows best.
Islam Q&A

Images of the torment in the grave

Praise be to Allaah.

The torment in the grave will vary according to the sins committed by the person in this world, whether he was a kaafir or a disobedient Muslim. There are saheeh ahaadeeth which describe this torment for the people who commit these sins. For example:

1 – Being struck with an iron hammer:

It was narrated from Anas (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “When a person is placed in his grave and his companions leave him, and he can no longer hear the sound of their sandals (footsteps), two angels come to him and make him sit up, and they ask him, ‘What did you say about this man Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)?’ He says, ‘I bear witness that he is the slave of Allaah and His Messenger.’ It is said, ‘Look at your place in Hell which Allaah has replaced for you with a place in Paradise.’” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, “And he sees them both. But as for the kaafir or hypocrite, he says, ‘I do not know, I used to say what the people said.’ It is said, ‘You did not know and you did not follow those who knew.’ Then he is struck a blow with an iron hammer between his ears and he screams a scream which everything around him can hear apart from the two races (of mankind and the jinn).”

(Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 1222)

2 –7: Furnishings from Hell are prepared out for him; he is clothed with fire; a door to Hell is opened for him; his grave is made narrow for him; he is struck with a great hammer which, if a mountain were to be struck with it, it would turn to dust; and he is given the tidings of torment in the Hereafter. Hence he will wish that the hour will never come.

Ahmad (17803) and Abu Dawood (4753) narrated that al-Baraa’ ibn ‘Aazib said: We went out with the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) for the funeral of a man from among the Ansaar. Then he raised his head and said, “Seek refuge with Allaah from the torment of the grave”, two or three times …” – Then he mentioned the soul of the believer and how he is blessed in his grave. Then he said: “But when the disbelieving slave is about to depart this world and enter the Hereafter, there come down to him from heaven angels with black faces, bringing sackcloth, and they sit around him as far as the eye can see. Then the Angel of Death comes and sits by his head, and he says, ‘O evil soul, come forth to the wrath of Allaah and His anger.’ Then his soul disperses inside his body, then comes out cutting the veins and nerves, like a skewer passing through wet wool. When he seizes it, they do not leave it in his hand for an instant before they take it and put it in that sackcloth, and there comes from it a stench like the foulest stench of a dead body on the face of the earth. Then they ascend and they do not pass by any group of angels but they say, ‘Who is this evil soul?’ and they say, ‘It is So and so the son of So and so, calling him by the worst names by which he was known in this world, until they reach the lowest heaven. They ask for it to be opened to them and it is not opened.” Then the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) recited (interpretation of the meaning):

“for them the gates of heaven will not be opened, and they will not enter Paradise until the camel goes through the eye of the needle”

[al-A’raaf 7:40]

He said: “Then Allaah says, ‘Record the book of My slave in Sijjeen in the lowest earth, and return him to the earth, for from it I created them, to it I will return them and from it I will bring them forth once again.’ So his soul is cast down.” Then the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) recited the verse (interpretation of the meaning):

“and whoever assigns partners to Allaah, it is as if he had fallen from the sky, and the birds had snatched him, or the wind had thrown him to a far off place”

[al-Hajj 22:31]

He said: “Then his soul is returned to his body, and there come to him two angels who make him sit up and they say to him, ‘Who is your Lord?’ He says, ‘Oh, oh, I don’t know.’ They say, ‘What is your religion?’ He says, ‘Oh, oh, I don’t know.’ Then a voice calls out from heaven, ‘Prepare for him a bed from Hell and clothe him from Hell, and open for him a gate to Hell.’ Then there comes to him some of its heat and hot winds, and his grave is constricted and compresses him until his ribs interlock. Then there comes to him a man with an ugly face and ugly clothes, and a foul stench, who says, ‘Receive the bad news, this is the day that you were promised.’ He says, ‘Who are you? Your face is a face which forebodes evil.’ He says, ‘I am your evil deeds.’ He says, ‘O Lord, do not let the Hour come, do not let the Hour come.’”

8 – Being swallowed up by the earth.

It was narrated from Ibn ‘Umar that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whilst a man was dragging his lower garment out of pride, the earth swallowed him up and he will continue sinking into the earth until the Day of Resurrection.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 5345; Muslim, 3894).

9- The edge of the mouth being torn to the back of the head

10- The head being smashed with a rock

11- Being burned in an tannoor oven

12- Swimming in a river of blood whilst being pelted with stones.

Al-Bukhaari (1386, 7047) narrated that Samurah ibn Jundub said:

The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) often used to ask his companions, “Has any one of you had a dream?” Then those whom Allaah willed would tell him (about their dreams). One morning he said,

“Last night, two people came to me (in a dream), and woke me up and said, ‘Let’s go!’ I set out with them, and we came across a man who was lying down, with another man standing over him, holding a big rock. He threw the rock at the man's head, smashing it. The rock rolled away, and the one who had thrown it followed it, and picked it up. By the time he came back to the man, his head had been restored to its former state. Then he (the one who had thrown the rock) did the same as he had done before. I said to my two companions, ‘Subhaan Allaah! Who are these two persons?’ They said, ‘Move on!’ So we went on, and came to a man who was lying flat on his back, with another man standing over him, holding an iron hook. He put the hook in the man's mouth and tore off that side of his face to the back (of his neck), and he tore his nose and his eye from front to back in a similar manner. Then he turned to the other side of the man's face and did likewise. No sooner had he finished the second side but the first side was restored to its former state, then he went back and did the same thing again. I said to my two companions, ‘Subhaan Allaah! Who are these two persons?’ They said, ‘Move on!’ So we went on, and came to something like a tannoor (a kind of oven, lined with clay, usually used for baking bread). – I think the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, in that oven there was much noise and voices. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) added: - We looked into it and saw naked men and women. A flame of fire was reaching them from underneath, and when it reached them, they cried out loudly. I asked them, ‘Who are these?’ They said to me, ‘Move on!’ So we went on and came to a river – I think he said, red like blood. – In the river there was a man swimming, and on the bank there was a man who had gathered many stones. Whilst the swimmer was swimming, the man who had gathered the stones approached him. The swimmer opened his mouth and the man on the bank threw a stone into it, then the swimmer carried on swimming. Each time he came back, he opened his mouth again, and the man on the bank threw another stone into his mouth. I said to my two companions, ‘Who are these two persons?’ They said, ‘Move on, move on!’ …

I said to them, I have seen many wonders this night. What do all these things mean that I have seen?’ They said: ‘We will tell you. The first man you came across, whose head was being smashed with the rock, is the man who studies the Qur’aan then he neither recites it nor acts upon it, and he goes to sleep, neglecting the obligatory prayers. The man you came across whose mouth, nose and ears were being torn from front to back, is the man who goes out of his house in the morning and tells a lie that is so serious that it spreads all over the world. The naked men and women whom you saw in a structure that resembled an oven are the adulterers and adulteresses. The man you saw swimming in the river with rocks being thrown into his mouth is the one who consumed riba (usury).”

Al-Haafiz ibn Hajar said:

This indicates that some sinners will be punished in al-barzakh (the interval between death and the Day of Resurrection).

Fath al-Baari, 12/445

12- Items stolen from the war booty will be set ablaze on the one who stole them.

Al-Bukhaari (4234) and Muslim (115) narrated that Abu Hurayrah said: “We went out with the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) to Khaybar, and Allaah granted us victory. We did not take gold or silver as booty, but we seized goods, food and clothes, then we set out for the valley. Along with the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) there was a slave called Rifaa’ah ibn Zayd. When we camped in the valley, the slave of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) stood up and began to unpack his saddlebag, when he was struck by a (stray) arrow which proved fatal. We said, ‘Congratulations to him, for he is a martyr, O Messenger of Allaah.’ The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: ‘Not so, by the One in Whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, for the small garment that he stole from the booty on the day of Khaybar and which was not part of his share is burning like fire on him.’ The people were very distressed by this. Then a man brought one or two shoelaces and said, ‘O Messenger of Allaah, I found (them) on the day of Khaybar.’ The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: ‘A lace of fire’ or ‘Two laces of fire.’”

13- Along with this physical punishment there will also be a spiritual or mental punishment, which is that in the grave the kaafir will be shown what would have been his place in Paradise if he had obeyed his Lord; this will increase his regret and pain when he realizes the greatness of the blessing that he has missed out on.

These are some of the kinds of punishment that will befall some sinners in the grave.

We ask Allaah to grant us refuge from the torment of the grave.

How can we get love of Allah swt?

by Allama Ibtisam Elahi Zaheer

Allah swt is creator of human beings . He has many different names and attributes .On one hand He is Avenger and takes revenge from criminals and transgressors on the other hand He is the most Beneficent, the most Merciful, the most Gracious and the Most Loving One. No one loves human beings more than Allah swt provided that they are obedient to Allah swt, even the mother cannot love her children like Allah swt. A person is unlucky if he is unable to get love of His Creator and he is the luckiest being if he is able to get love of Allah swt. Allah swt has mentioned in holy Quran the ways by which we can get His love:

1/ By Doing Sincere Tobah:

When a person commits sin or disobeys Allah swt he invites anger of Allah swt and problems start coming in his life.Allah swt says in Holy Quran:

And whatever of misfortune befalls you, it is because of what your hands have earned. And He pardons much. (See the Qur'ân Verse 35:45). (Ash-Shura 42:30)

When societies are disobedient to Allah swt what is the result ?The result has been mentioned in Holy Quran:

Evil (sins and disobedience of Allâh, etc.) has appeared on land and sea because of what the hands of men have earned (by oppression and evil deeds, etc.), that Allâh may make them taste a part of that which they have done, in order that they may return (by repenting to Allâh, and begging His Pardon). (Ar-Rum 30:41)

But when a person seeks forgiveness of Allah swt .Allah swt forgives all his sins.

Allah swt says:

Say: "O 'Ibâdî (My slaves) who have transgressed against themselves (by committing evil deeds and sins)! Despair not of the Mercy of Allâh, verily Allâh forgives all sins. Truly, He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (Az-Zumar 39:53)

Allah swt has mentioned three big sins in Surah Furqan and made it clear that any one who will commit these acts of transgression he will have to face hell fire

Allah swt say:

And those who invoke not any other ilâh (god) along with Allâh, nor kill such life as Allâh has forbidden, except for just cause, nor commit illegal sexual intercourse and whoever does this shall receive the punishment. The torment will be doubled to him on the Day of Resurrection, and he will abide therein in disgrace; (Al-Furqan 25:68-69)

But it has been mentioned in Holy Quran that when a person does sincere tobah Allah swt will forgives all his sins and replace them with good deeds.

Allah swt says:

Except those who repent and believe (in Islâmic Monotheism), and do righteous deeds, for those, Allâh will change their sins into good deeds, and Allâh is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (Al-Furqan 25:70)

A sincere repentance also results in getting love of Allah swt thus if we repent sincerely and give up all those bad deeds which invite wrath of Allah swt we will be able to get love of our Creator.

Allah swt says in Holy Quran:
Truly, Allâh loves those who turn unto Him in repentance (Al-Baqarah 2:222)

By purifying ourselves:
We can also get love of Allah swt by keeping ourselves neat and clean .We can make ourselves neat and clean by taking bath frequently ,doing ablution five times a days and keeping our clothes free from stains and impurities.

Allah swt says in Holy Quran :
And He loves those who purify themselves(Al-Baqarah 2:222)

On another instance Allah swt says:

And Allâh loves those who make themselves clean and pure (At-Tawbah 9:108)

By Being Patient:

Ups and downs are parts of life. Some people loose heart when they face problems and crisis where as true believers know that every thing is in hands of Allah swt .When ever they face a problem they say:

"Nothing shall ever happen to us except what Allâh has ordained for us. He is our Maulâ (Lord, Helper and Protector)." (At-Tawbah 9:51)

They know that hard times and pleasant times are in hands of Allah swt .Allah swt has mentioned this reality in the Holy Quran in the following verse:

And so are the days (good and not so good), We give to men by turns, that Allâh may test those who believe (Aali Imran 3:140)

Actually felicity of hereafter is linked with the test of human beings and Allah swt will only give Jannah after testing the human beings.

Allah swt says in Holy Quran:

Do you think that you will enter Paradise before Allâh tests those of you who fought (in His Cause) and (also) tests those who are As-Sâbirin (the patient ones, etc.)? (Aali Imran 3:142)

When a person submits His will before Allah swt and always bear hard ship of life with patience Allah swt starts loving him .Allah swt says:

And Allâh loves As-Sâbirin (the patient ones, etc.). (Aali Imran 3:146)

So if we want to get love of Allah swt we should be patient on His decisions and should face hardship of lives with patience and peace.

By Relying on Allah swt:

A positive approach towards ups and downs of life besides patience is reliance on Allah. When a person relies on Allah swt the result is that Allah swt becomes sufficient for him. This reality has been narrated in Holy Quran in the following way.

Allah swt says:

And whosoever puts his trust in Allâh, then He will suffice him. Verily, Allâh will accomplish his purpose. Indeed Allâh has set a measure for all things. (At-Talaq 65:3)

Allah swt has commanded many times in Holy Quran that we should always put our trust in Him .When we will be consistent in this act we will be able to get love of Allah swt.Allah swt says:

Put your trust in Allâh, certainly, Allâh loves those who put their trust (in Him). (Aali Imran 3:159)

By Doing Justice:

Justice is a great deed but it is some times very difficult act because sometimes we have to do justice even with our close relatives and when this stage comes we have to go against our emotions and love .Similarly sometimes due to enmity we are biased towards a person or group but when it comes to justice we will have to overcome our hatred and biasing. It is command of Allah swt that we have to do justice in every situation .

Allah swt says:

O you who believe! Stand out firmly for justice, as witnesses to Allâh, even though it be against yourselves, or your parents, or your kin, be he rich or poor, Allâh is a Better Protector to both (than you). So follow not the lusts (of your hearts), lest you may avoid justice, and if you distort your witness or refuse to give it, verily, Allâh is Ever Well-Acquainted with what you do. (An-Nisa 4:135)

On another instance Allah swt says:

O you who believe! Stand out firmly for Allâh and be just witnesses and let not the enmity and hatred of others make you avoid justice. Be just: that is nearer to piety, and fear Allâh. Verily, Allâh is Well¬Acquainted with what you do. (Al-Ma'idah 5:8)

When a person detaches himself from personal likes and dislikes He is able to achieve love of Allah swt .

Allah swt says:

Verily, Allâh loves those who deal with equity. (Al-Mumtahinah 60:8)

By doing Ihsan/ favour with others:

Justice is indeed a great attribute and any one who does justice succeeds in getting love of almighty Allah swt .But doing favour or ihsan with others is some thing beyond justice.Ihsan can be elaborated with an example. If we have taken 10000 from some one as loan justice is to pay him back his money and ihsan is to pay him back more than 10000 without his demand. It is some thing different from interest where extra money is demanded by lender .Another example is that a person has to be killed if he is a killer because it is requirement of justice but if the inheritors of person who was killed forgive the killer without any pressure or greed it will be ihsan.

Allah sawt has commanded us to do both justice and Ihsan in Holy Quran

Allah swt says:

Verily, Allâh enjoins Al-Adl/justice and Al-Ihsân/favour(An-Nahl 16:90)

When a person does favour with other Muslim brother or sister and sacrifice his right or position he is able to get love of Allah swt .Allah swt says in Holy Quran
Verily, Allâh loves Al¬Muhsinûn (good¬doers – who do favour with others). (Al-Ma'idah 5:13)

So we can earn love of Almighty by doing favour with others.

By Struggling in way of Allah swt:

Every one struggles in this world for himself for his family for his tribe for his nation. The best people are those who struggle in the way of Allah swt with full commitment and dedication .

Allah swt says in Holy Quran:
Verily, Allâh loves those who fight in His Cause in rows (ranks) as if they were a solid structure. (As-Saff 61:4)

So we can earn love of Allah swt by struggling in His way with all our resources , energies and abilities.

By Obyeing And Following Rasool salal laho aliehi wasalam.

Allah swt raised Rasool salal laho aliehi wasalam as His final prophet and declared his life style as role model for us.

Allah swt says in Holy Quran:

Indeed in the Messenger of Allâh (Muhammad SAW) you have a good example to follow for him who hopes in (the Meeting with) Allâh and the Last Day and remembers Allâh much. (Al-Ahzab 33:21)

Any one who obeys prophet salal laho aliehi wasalam actually obeys Allah swt

Allah swt says:
He who obeys the Messenger (Muhammad SAW), has indeed obeyed Allâh (An-Nisa 4:80)

Any one who wants to earn love of Allah swt can easily do so by following footsteps of prophet Muhammad salal laho aliehi wasalam.Allah swt has made it clear in Holy Quran .

Allah swt says:

Say (O Muhammad SAW to mankind): "If you (really) love Allâh then follow me Allâh will love you and forgive you of your sins. And Allâh is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful." (Aali Imran 3:31)

So we can get love of Allah swt by doing all the good deeds mentioned by our creator. If we will be loved by Allah swt we will be able to achieve success of this life and hereafter.May Allah give us courage and energy to do all the good deeds mentioned in the Holy Book revealed by Allah swt.
